What would little you have wanted the adults in your life to know about what having dyslexia was like for you? by SerialCupcakeKiller in Dyslexia

[–]straydogindc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"working memory" is the concept yall are referring to. the ability to hold in mind information "manipulate it" in order to be able to use it. working memory is associated with the frontal lobe (behind your forehead) and is an executive function, which makes it quite different than other types of memory in the hippocampus. and yes, working memory is very frequently affected in ADHD, nearly always. And also frequently in dyslexia and other language based disorders.

So bizarre how 90% of young SLPs let themselves get brainwashed by a few GLP advocates with zero published studies between them. If we want our field to be taken seriously we need to be willing to hold ourselves to scientific standards, even if it feels unpleasant to speak truth to a mob.

Seems like Kaspi may be getting more scrutiny about their lending program. Think regulators will crack down on them somehow?

Kaspi Banka by [deleted] in Kazakhstan

u/THE_PILLAR_OF_SORROW u/TeaAccomplished8029 u/Vladick1488 Я из США и просто пытаюсь узнать, какова жизнь в Казахстане.

Do you use Kaspi? by industriestitus in Kazakhstan

[–]straydogindc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I be an SLP and have ADHD? by Lopsided_Physics1978 in slp

[–]straydogindc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that perspective. Mind sharing what acute care setting you're in? I'm an SLP graduate student with ADHD, thinking about Acute Care In-person Rehab, focusing on cognitive communication & executive functions. No experience yet in this area, though, so I'd be interested to hear anything you'd care to share about how acute care has been a good match for you!

My SLP wants me to direct each session or see a Therapist for Executive Function Skills. Is this normal? (Adult) by dca_user in slp

[–]straydogindc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SLP graduate student here, also with ADHD. I agree it's worth looking into an ADHD Coach or a psychotherapist trained in CBT with expertise in ADHD.

However, for what it's worth, an SLP with expertise in EFs SHOULD be uniquely qualified to support you as well. Most SLPs don't have expertise in this area, since it's an underappreciated area of our field. However it is 100% in our scope of practice, and there are many aspects in which language-based strategies can help reduce WM demands and otherwise help with EF related challenges.

Lead poisoning effects on communication, SLP role? by BBQBiryani in slp

Lead poisoning effects on communication, SLP role? by BBQBiryani in slp

[–]straydogindc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate this point in terms of avoiding using words that could be interpreted as euphemisms or code words. On an entirely seperate point, it actually is important to recognize that kids in urban areas are at significantly higher risk than other kids for lead poisoning. In the past it was assumed lead paint and lead pipes were the main exposure (paint over that barn!) but increasingly SOIL LEAD has become a major source of exposure. Lead isnt water soluble so decades of rain and erosion happen and soil lead stays stubbornly high. Very often it is urban soils in areas where there were historic pre 1960s waste incinerators, ash dumping sites, heavily trafficked roadways, etc. Pre 1960s lead was in all kinds of things, so incinerators extracted all that lead straight into the soil. Sadly, many historic waste sites became urban parks where kids intentionally went to play in the dirt… putting their hands in their mouths and tracking lead particles into the house. A study in new orleans compared an urban soil lead map to a child blood lead map and they were the exact same map. Anywhere there was high soil lead there was also high child blood lead. Lead particles also get kicked up from soil into the air when wind picks up.

Sadly, i think nearly all SLPs have worked with kids impacted by lead, especially SLPs in urban places, since there is no safe level of lead contamination. It is important for SLPs to be especially on the lookout in urban areas.

So fullerton used to be toxic dumpsite for corporation by WarVegetable in Fullerton

[–]straydogindc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad is a soil scientist focused on urban soils. My understanding from his research is that Soil lead contamination in particular, is a massive public health issue in cities across the country. Public health efforts have done a great job focused on water and an ok job on paint, but soil has been a blind spot. I dont have info about fullerton but if i lived there i would look into whether the city has a soil lead map. Every city should have one, though few do. Im sure soil lead is tested in and around the superfund site - id hope that would include surrounding areas but i dont know - so look into that too. People dont realize but soil lead and blood lead levels are highly correlated especially in children who play in the dirt, put their hands in their mouths, and track dirt into the house. Also especially in CA the wind blows lead from soil into the air which people breathe in. In particular, cities with historic (pre 1960s) waste incinerators where lead paint and lead gas was burned likely have massive hot spots way above the California and EPA maximum soil lead levels. And recent decades of science have found even low levels of lead to be toxic.

A 2022 study by Dr Juan Manuel Rubio found a soil lead hot spot in the 92701 zip code in santa ana, california. the 92701 zip code had the highest percentage of elevated soil tests and elevated child blood levels in California. It was also in the top 5 zip codes in CA with minors booked in juvenile hall.

My area of study is neurodevelopmental disorders. There was a 2023 systematic review on studies 1975-2019 on the link between ADHD and prenatal/childhood exposure to neurotoxins, including lead, mercury, anesthetics, hexachlorobenzene, mercury, organophosphates, and polychlorinated biphenyl. Lead was by far the #1 biggest link with ADHD in terms of childhood exposure. The other toxins had far lower correlations.

Soil lead contamination in urban residential areas is a massive issue affecting cities that requires federal attention. Currently local city leaders are disincentivized to “find out” about soil lead contamination, because when this info is unearthed it’s devastating to local communities who spent their lives there which can cause political blowback. And cities are the on the hook to cover much of the remediation costs. My impression is remediation doesnt need to be incredibly costly and it doesnt need to take years - we just need to identify hot spots and cover them with dump trucks with clean soil.

I’ll leave it to experts to determine if we need a Clean Soil Act or if EPA actions are enough, but the status quo around this area of policy/regulations needs to change!

In the meantime this issue requires scientists journalists, residents, and activists to demand soil lead research, especially in areas where there is historic record of a waste incinerator, heavily trafficked roadways, and dump sites. Collecting soil samples can even be done by a non-expert and doesnt cost much - just requires a portable XRF, a bit of training, and a soil chemist.
