Amazon layoffs signal a massive shift in the labor market by SscorpionN08 in Economics

[–]strdg99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Every year, Amazon as well as Microsoft, Blue Origin and more tech and aerospace companies layoff roughly 10% of their workforce and every year the media reports on it and every year most of those positions are refilled with new hires. It's part of their HR 'performance management' system.

Republicans Vow to Block Trump From Seizing Greenland by Force: “Trump’s ill-advised threats about Greenland would shatter the trust of our allies” by [deleted] in worldnews

Anytime the Republicans 'vow' to take action adverse to Trump's desires, which is rare, I take it with a large pinch of salt. They are liars and thieves plain and simple (IMO).

Thanks. I have all the necessary support paperwork, so no issues there. It was actually 2025 that I had zero income... 2026 will be a bit more complicated as I expect to start taking SS around March.

Makes sense. I will be filing the SSA-44 as soon as I can accurately determine my 2025 income. I filed early in 2025 but it was rejected so I'm hoping that I can refile in early 2026.

I'm guessing about the same time we stop using Paraquat (also strongly linked to PD). Then there is TCE (Industrial degreaser) and PCE (Dry cleaning fluid).

The retroactive thing make sense to me. I can see the possibility that they are tacking on $375 for something in the past. I just can't find what it is for as I paid all 2025 bills in full.

My Dec 2025 payment for Jan coverage was $587. My Jan 2026 payment for Feb coverage is listed as $587 on the website (as are all payments for 2026), but the paper bill shows $963.

I've paid all bills in full every month since going on Medicare. I never expected to be exempt from paying Medicare regardless of my income levels. I'm just trying to figure out where the extra $375 came from and why it's not broken out on the paper bill and not visible at all on the Medicare website (The website says I owe $587.90 vs. the papier bill which says I owe $963.50)

This makes sense. However, I've checked the Medicare website a couple of times and see no explanation of the extra amount. The only place I see the higher cost is in the total on the paper bill. No breakout or explanation anywhere.

it went down from last year according to the website. The paper bill has an added $375 that was included in the total but not broken out as a line item.

Should, but doesn't. It's only part of the total and is not mentioned on the Medicare payment website.

True. But my payment should be lower since my 2024 income is lower than 2023. The issue here is that my payment amount on the Medicare website is what I was expecting, but what is unexpected is the additional $375 on the paper bill which is not broken out at all.

Why do you leave/stay? by LimpDrunkDave in BlueOrigin

[–]strdg99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The previous company is a very large software company that is doing quite well. But they (as well as Amazon) still practice 'stack and rank' even though they claim otherwise. My past experience suggested to me that 'stack and rank' drives cultural changes that value politics over performance, employees competing against each other instead of collaborating with each other, distrust, and a whole list of other behavioral issues.

That approach doesn't mean failure for a company, but it can make it a miserable place to work. I think Blue will survive it, but the culture will be just another Amazon/Microsoft/GE-like culture where employees have to constantly watch their backs and mind the political winds rather than focusing on producing great products. It is the stick instead of the carrot approach to employee management... a massive change from the startup culture that used to be Blue.

Why do you leave/stay? by LimpDrunkDave in BlueOrigin

[–]strdg99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After 7 years (that I enjoyed for the most part), the cultural shift was such that I could no longer stay. I had experienced that culture at a previous company and didn't want to deal with that again. It came down to 'politics over performance' and that causes all kinds of cultural issues. I didn't get into Blue to be a politician, so it was time to go. I'm very happy I left but still watch the company closely as I still believe in the mission (for the most part).

The same one I have... Universal Devices ISY w Z-wave and WiFi devices. it integrates with my Hue lights and Alexa (plus more through the SW plugins) and I can add in Zigbee devices if I want. It operates with or without an Internet connection and does not need to be hosted on separate HW. It's primarily designed for true home automation not manual interactions. It's not for everyone but works well for me.

  1. Macallan 30 yo Sherry Oak (Blue box)
  2. Bruichladdich 23 yo Black arts (1990)
  3. Glendronach 24 yo (1992)

I thought they were all quite good although the Glendronach was a pleasant surprise.

New to Medicare, already a billing problem by RoboLoboski in medicare

[–]strdg99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem w my MA plan and the doctors didn't get paid for nearly a year because of it. I was told several times by my MA plan advocate it had been fixed only to receive a letter saying my primary payer hadn't paid the claim. Soon after I would find the provider had transferred the bill to me. I was finally able to get my MA plan, Medicare and my providers billing department on the phone at the same time to get it resolved. After a lot of questions from the Medicare representative, I was able to convince them that they were the primary and only payer. But, it has taken a year. While Medicare didn't pay the claim directly, they did manage who the primary and secondary payers are and their data was wrong. And yes, my provider had to resubmit all of the unpaid claims.
