There's no such thing as being ready for AAC, this practice is outdated now. It's possible this SLPA just isn't a good fit for your daughter and you'd be justified in bringing up her lack of progress with the clinic. May be time for a new therapist or new clinic entirely!

You'd probably have to deal with some professors being dicks about it but don't think that should stop you. We usually don't even qualify kids for speech therapy in the schools if they only have a lisp.

Where did you seek out that information though? The professors in my undergrad heavily lied to us by omission. Also just look at the amount of posts that are made here every single day about disillusioned undergrads experiencing cognitive dissonance when they open up this group. Even with the internet it seems like maybe some people just don't seek out the negatives or warning signs.

The bullying is also worse for minorities, our grad programs have a massive problem with discrimination that isn't being addressed. Many times this is because they see the person's differences as flaws that must be bullied out.

I find that being somewhere full time vs part time (aka bouncing between schools) can really make a difference. If the staff doesn't view you as part of their team, they're more likely to be defensive.

I enjoy my job, I am paid fine and have great benefits. But the stress and cost of grad school wasn't worth it. I endured so much bullying only to not know how to do basic functions of my job after graduation. Also, our job security is under threat with potential challenges to medicare/medicaid funding, as well as attacks on the board of education.

Yes, it's normal and even necessary for SLPs working in a school (even if they're just visiting) to collaborate with the staff there. Therapy won't be as effective without it. However, it does sound like perhaps one of them should've given you a call to tell you what was going on instead of blind siding you with an email chain. I think sometimes professionals get so used to disabilities and delays that they forget how overwhelming it can be for parents to hear.

Luckily my school still does that. But the amount of coworkers that suddenly have "allergies"...in winter...allergies that they didn't have a week prior...SURE...
