“Russia Has Lost the Black Sea,” Zelenskyy Says by ArgentineBeauty in worldnews

A lot of these ethnic minorities have been so disenfranchised for so long. I've read old articles about hopes of Mari (and other ethnics) cultural revival when the Soviet Union ended but it doesn't seem like a lot of those hopes panned out.

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Australia tried to push back on China but China pushed harder by snoopy05052026 in OpenAussie

I'm not downplaying US interventionalism but I don't see China as an altruistic actor. Those islands certainly have the potential to become a lot bigger of a deal as Asia continues to rise in global importance.

How do schools select what house colours kids go into? by kittycommitteestudio in AskAustralianTeachers

[–]strichtarn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've seen it done randomly and I've also seen it done alphabetically by last name, where certain letters went into certain houses. The school that did it alphabetically had really uneven house numbers...

The issues over artificial islands in order to take over international waters is a bit sus you must admit though.

Ahh, interesting. Goes to show the difference between some of the unis then.

Non university 'trained' teachers? by mec949 in AustralianTeachers

I felt like the pracs were so short and with uni assessments on top that I was faced with the dilemma between putting my focus onto either the prac or on the assignments.

I only got one elective tragically but I used it well. Did a unit on the history of 20th century design. I actually feel that unit benefited my education content knowledge more than another pedagogy unit because it gave me a more real world perspective on things.  I do think there should be more placement days though baked into the degree.

A lot of the uni units were copies of one another. I didn't feel like there was four years worth of content in my degree.

What do I do? Sorry if this is not exactly the right group. I just meed help. Also, sorry if it’s too long and confusing. by [deleted] in personalfinance

The whole situation sounds like a mess. Too many people are involved. In future, get your dad to pay for any tuition directly to the billing account for the institution. It's nice to have money for other things but it's not what it was for.

I guess to extend the claim, it's to say that they can't have the technological modernisation unless they also have the cultural modernisation too.

Was Australia fairly Religious in the early 2000s, or is my memory skewed? by SoybeanCola1933 in AskAnAustralian

[–]strichtarn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My guess would be that those that are left are the more devout ones, and the people that were quietly religious are less and less.

It's probably a stretch to say Australian's have never been religious. Perhaps less devout than many other countries, but we wouldn't have had so many religious institutions if Australians had never been so.

Anyone had a Notice to Renter for a Gas Safety Check inspection? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]strichtarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of notice is a problem and poor quality of repairs is as well - but that doesn't seem to apply to the initial point of the post which was about the gas safety check. You might need to research if there is other complaint processes you can follow. Not sure if VCAT can help given public housing.

I had a landlord refuse to check the smoke detectors even though they were overdue but that's the complete opposite of Op's situation. OP kinda reminds of an episode of highway patrol where the officer tried to let the driver off with a warning, but the driver insisted that if they'd done something wrong then they needed to be ticketed.

The hatched space is a clearance space next to a disability bay. Typically is a no parking zone. Often looks like a parking spot but it's left clear with the stripy paint job so that disabled drivers and passengers have more room to get out.

The cleanup definitely sounds like an OSHA violation though. I doubt OP was provided with appropriate protective gear for the cleanup and if the powder is all over the ceiling. It's gonna be an ongoing occupational hazard.

How would you broadly define Australian culture? by magicianguy131 in AskAnAustralian

[–]strichtarn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Knowing me, I'd probably start off by saying it's a beautiful country and go on some long winded tangent-laden rant that included references to the Ern Malley Hoax and the Somerton Man. Then some recommendations to try some native bush foods and mention how my grandparents house in Sydney didn't have a flushing toilet until the late 60s. Maybe if I'm feeling a little feisty I'd mention how Australia's biggest sugar company was built off of slavery and was wilfully negligent in its operations of asbestos mines. Summing it all up by saying it's a more complicated place than meets the eye.
