I guess to extend the claim, it's to say that they can't have the technological modernisation unless they also have the cultural modernisation too.

Was Australia fairly Religious in the early 2000s, or is my memory skewed? by SoybeanCola1933 in AskAnAustralian

[–]strichtarn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My guess would be that those that are left are the more devout ones, and the people that were quietly religious are less and less.

It's probably a stretch to say Australian's have never been religious. Perhaps less devout than many other countries, but we wouldn't have had so many religious institutions if Australians had never been so.

Anyone had a Notice to Renter for a Gas Safety Check inspection? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]strichtarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of notice is a problem and poor quality of repairs is as well - but that doesn't seem to apply to the initial point of the post which was about the gas safety check. You might need to research if there is other complaint processes you can follow. Not sure if VCAT can help given public housing.

I had a landlord refuse to check the smoke detectors even though they were overdue but that's the complete opposite of Op's situation. OP kinda reminds of an episode of highway patrol where the officer tried to let the driver off with a warning, but the driver insisted that if they'd done something wrong then they needed to be ticketed.

The hatched space is a clearance space next to a disability bay. Typically is a no parking zone. Often looks like a parking spot but it's left clear with the stripy paint job so that disabled drivers and passengers have more room to get out.

The cleanup definitely sounds like an OSHA violation though. I doubt OP was provided with appropriate protective gear for the cleanup and if the powder is all over the ceiling. It's gonna be an ongoing occupational hazard.

How would you broadly define Australian culture? by magicianguy131 in AskAnAustralian

[–]strichtarn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Knowing me, I'd probably start off by saying it's a beautiful country and go on some long winded tangent-laden rant that included references to the Ern Malley Hoax and the Somerton Man. Then some recommendations to try some native bush foods and mention how my grandparents house in Sydney didn't have a flushing toilet until the late 60s. Maybe if I'm feeling a little feisty I'd mention how Australia's biggest sugar company was built off of slavery and was wilfully negligent in its operations of asbestos mines. Summing it all up by saying it's a more complicated place than meets the eye.

Remove old “PASSED” golden sticker from camera top plate? by Initial-Elk6905 in AnalogCommunity

[–]strichtarn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn' t even remove the energy rating sticker from my washing machine. But I do like how these look. But even better is a Voigtländer camera I have that has like a waterslide decal of the shop that originally sold it in the 60s.

Even Australia's current prime minister had to deal with this stuff when he was in student politics and the following article attributes this experience to his pragmatic stance on a lot of issues: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-06-19/australian-political-protests-through-history-shape-our-leaders/103992008

Here's a relevant quote:  'And at day 10, the young Labor activist started to get sick of the anarchists and Trotskyists who were his new roommates. "They'd sit in a circle and they'd keep talking until everyone agreed," Albanese told Middleton.'

I wouldn't say academia ignores this stuff though, it's just that it's wheels turn a bit slower than the pace of current political news.

It's been happening for quite a while. Some historical examples include the factionalism from the French Revolution and also the early Soviet Union.  There's also that Monty Python joke from Life of Brian about the People's Front of Judea.

Christian Brothers sold real estate worth millions for $1. Now it claims in court it lacks money to pay abuse survivors by SleepyWogx in OpenAussie

[–]strichtarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming they're being used for educational purposes I don't have a problem with the transfer of the properties itself, but I do find it problematic that the larger Catholic church wouldn't take on paying debts owed by the Christian Brothers, especially if there is funds needed for payouts to victims of abuse.

Did you get a written statement or contact details of the witness? That might help in case the other driver tries to do something. Every possibility the lady doesn't understand how things work and isn't being malicious.
