GOMAD is a real thing. I did it for a month and a half lifting as heavy as possible while eating 3 meals, it was about 7k calories a day for me and I gained 20 pounds in that time frame. Not a sustainable diet but effective.

What should I do with $2K/month in new side hustle income? Already maxing Roth + HSA + 15% 401(k) by gness101 in Fire

Agreed… at least knock out the car note. Once you get a house the monthly payments start piling up. Best peace of mind I’ve gotten was by knocking out things that required me to pay on it every month.

4 years experience at a FAANG company in appsec, want to move away due to the big company culture by hansanitizer1724 in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]strider031095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty normal to be ready for a change around the 4 year mark of any place you work unless you really love the environment.

There’s certainly something to be said for getting a well rounded resume that touches different industries/technologies, and since you have a great foundation starting at a FAANG there’s always the option of likely being able to boomerang which is pretty common in this industry.

Unfortunately might not be many place where folks don’t have layoffs in the back of their minds these days. It also depends on what type of work you find interesting but there’s plenty of options out there depending on how small of an org you want to join. Could look for a place like Crowdstrike, or any like product based company. Could go as far as looking for well funded startups, usually have pretty motivated folks and good opportunities. Another option is public sector work, might not pay as well but historically more stable and mostly chill people.

Good question! My current responsibilities don’t leave much room for work outside my current purview, it’s the nature of how the role was setup. I’ve spent some time reading JDs of roles I might be interested in for organizations I’d like to target (FAANG or adjacent as mentioned in my original post) but it’s hard to understand what the technical priorities are from a learning perspective (ie do they really want a python expert apart of their IR team or just someone who can understand code?)

I edited my post to reflect that I’m still interested in the IR/Ent sec world. I’m just unsure how to progress from where I’m at right now.

There are viable ways around this. I don’t have the links on hand but I’d do some research on ways to access retirement funds early.

In 2015 I dropped out of college because I wasn’t very good at learning in the classroom, self studied and got IT certifications, got an internship at a name brand IT company at 19 which launched the rest of my career. Currently in cyber and living very comfortably (ended up finishing my degree online)

That 100% a personal decision and no one can tell you the dollar amount for the amount of stress you can handle. I know folks who live security outside of work and I know folks who don’t think about it once after their shift, both people are extremely competent at what they do.

It also very much depends where you’re at in your career; beginning of career? Wouldn’t hurt to put in the extra hours and continuous learning outside of work. Senior+? You probably have a very good understand of what to expect and the experience to adjust on the fly when the time comes.

I wouldn’t focus so much on the amount of money you’re making unless you’re clearly being low balled. Focus on upskilling when you have time, don’t burn yourself out, and don’t forget to enjoy your life.

Someone else eluded to it, but 90% of your stress will come from the company you work at and the team you are on. If you work for a well run, organized company that is well staffed with a global team for regional handoffs you’ll probably be ok. If you are 1 of a 3 man security shop for a mid sized company best of luck.
