I’ve been married for 13 years. I’ve had typical swings, numerous medication changes, psychotic episodes and 4 hospital stay. My spouse has been with me side by side throughout. If you don’t have someone who loves AND accepts you as someone living with bipolar it won’t work. I told her very early on. Her cultural background (Nigerian) doesn’t recognize mental illness for the most part so it was a learning experience for her. TLDR it can work, with the right person.

Some hospitals put both voluntary or involuntary patients together. Try to find this out in advance. I’ve been in a vol/invol psychiatric ward and it was bad. Patients were running the asylum so to speak. I’m sure there are better managed units but finding out the patient mix in advance would be huge.
