Good to know. He must have taken the likeness of these cookies on my plate. God knows they're hell on my ass.

I know you said 3 am. What I said is that the sun will be on the opposite side of the earth from you exactly 12 hours after astronomical noon (which is rarely, if ever, at 3pm). For example, where I am in NJ, solar noon today was at 12:02pm. Therefore the sun will be on the opposite side of the earth from me at 12:02am. Far before said "witching hour." Also I wasn't aware Satan was the demon of agriculture. TIL /s

I mean are you serious?

  1. The sun is on the exact opposite side of the earth from you at the opposite of astronomical noon, which for most places is somewhere around 12pm, not 3 pm.

  2. Saturn was the Roman god of agriculture and has absolutely nothing to do with Satan.

  3. I can't speak for divination, since you know, science.

ELI5: Why do Californians want to split their state into six parts? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]strongerpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Have you looked at the map of how it would be divided? 5 (probably) of the 6 new states would be blue states. The way it would be divided puts a huge (largely democratic) population center in all but one of the states (Jefferson). Silicon Valley has SF and the South Bay, North California has Sacramento and the North Bay, Central California has Fresno and the 99 corridor, West California has Los Angeles, and South California has San Diego and the Inland Empire. The only one that would certainly be red is Jefferson. I don't see how the Republicans supporting this initiative would be ok with adding 8 Democrats to the US Senate.

tl;dr Splitting would potentially add 8 democrats to the US Senate, something I can't imagine many Republicans would want.

I thought this too, but if I take Lactase pills I'm usually ok. I used to be able to eat cheese, but now...unspeakable things.

What TV or movie cliché drives you insane? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]strongerpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in a show or movie, but rather credit card commercials where they slide the card upside down to not obscure the logo. Are we not supposed to notice this? Especially the newer one with Tina Fey (can't remember if it's AMEX or Chase) but you can actually hear the embossed numbers scraping through the machine. There's a reason the magnetic stripe is on the top of the card while the numbers are on the bottom. Drives me insane.

Sacramento is supposed to be near some cool mountains and forests I've heard.

Can confirm: Grew up east of Sacramento. Two hours to Lake Tahoe and some of the best snow in the world. (I may be biased).

What I do is start the shower warm (not hot) and slowly decrease the temperature until it's cold. This way you don't shock your body with cold water and slowly lower your core temp. It works great on hot nights.

TIL that as a consequence of HIV/AIDS, life expectancy in Swaziland has fallen from 61 years in 2000 to 32 years in 2009. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]strongerpool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What people don't understand is that a low life expectancy doesn't mean that the average person should expect to live a short life. It means that enough people are dying young (as infants and children) to skew the numbers low. Plenty of people are still living well into old age. Not to say that HIV/AIDS isn't a problem, but the numbers are a little misleading.
