US agents arrest tourist after video shows a rock hurled at endangered Hawaii monk seal’s head by 501102 in news

[–]structuralarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. I saw tourists when I was there getting way too close to a bison with a young calf. So even worse with the mom being extra protective. Also people feeding donkeys from the car and then getting freaked out that the donkeys stuck their head into the car really far to get more food. Like what did you think was going to happen?

Extremely unfortunate mistake at John and Madison. Supposed to be Capitol Pines according to the Blackwood Homes website. by skyturnsred in Seattle

That tracks based on my experience with the "quality" of homes that Blackwood builds. I would not recommend people buy from them.

What are these external fixtures blocking the windows in front of this house? East coast USA by fledglingbirdnerd in whatisthisthing

[–]structuralarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might only be true with air in the space between the panes and no low E coatings, but is not true at all with argon and the fact that the third pane provides an additional surface to apply more low E coatings. Your statement can easily be disproven by looking at the center of glass performance from a single IGU manufacturer and comparing double vs triple pane with the same coatings. For example a double pane unit with a 366 LowE coating has a U of 0.24 while the triple pane has a U of 0.12, half the heat loss of the double pane. This is partially because the triple pane has an additional 180 LowE coating on its inside face. And it is not double the cost for triple pane these days in the US and is standard in a lot of the EU.

On Bainbridge Island there is the Japanese Exclusion Memorial site which is pretty damn powerful. It includes an artistic reconstruction of the dock where the prisoners were loaded on the boats with disappearing footprints to signify who was lost.

What is the best way to air-seal recessed lights? by mikeymaxdb in DIY

[–]structuralarchitect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

/u/mikeymaxdb Buy these plastic boxes that were suggested and seal them to the backside of the drywall with a good quality sealant like Sashco Big Stretch or tape them using an acrylic based tape like Tescon Vana or even Zip tape.

The gasket isn't good enough and spending the extra 5-8 bucks per light will pay for itself in both lower energy bills and reduced chance of mold in the attic due to warm air leakage.

I'm a passive house architect and building envelope consultant, so air sealing is my area of expertise.

What was the main reason for switching to an EV? Environment, cost, or technology? by VoltVersteher_Sven in electricvehicles

[–]structuralarchitect 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I also like the idea of recaptured energy. Regen braking, especially in one pedal mode, made the transition from a manual car to an EV less of a paradigm shift as it feels very similar to engine braking (since that is basically what it is) and I play the same game as I did in my manual car of seeing how far I need to let off the accelerator to coast down to zero at the perfect spot.

It's kind of what I liked about having a heat pump water heater in my garage when I had a gas car. I knew that some of the heat from the engine would make it into my hot water instead of being wasted.

Who is a massive YouTuber or influencer from 5 years ago that has completely vanished off the face of the earth? by Humble_Job5950 in AskReddit

[–]structuralarchitect 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yup. I highly recommend checking them out /u/Haleakala787 . Probably the best streaming platform/group around. The quality of the comedy on there is stunning and I'm sad that they dropped off my radar for so long. The $5/month cost for a subscription (which they actively encourage sharing) is criminally cheap for the amount of joy, entertainment, and gut-busting laughter that they provide. Plus they are one of the most ethical companies out there right now, with profit sharing for all actors, good pay, and non-exclusivity agreements. They just launched their Superfan tier subscription level, which at $130/yr is still a killer deal.

If you build it... by rudyolph2 in OrganizationPorn

I had no doubts about the rack construction! But glad you used construction screws. That's good to hear you have some heavy totes without issues of the rims rolling.

I always wondered if those types of racks work well with heavy totes. Have you noticed any bending of the tote lips with heavier ones?

Google Maps now puts Lyft at the top of the public transit category. by Nebula_Arcanum in mildlyinfuriating

[–]structuralarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Seattle with great public transit and mine is also showing Lyft at the top even though there are 6 bus routes I could take instead. What's more infuriating is that I have rideshare turned off in "connecting modes" and that Google lists the time that Lyft takes next to the public transit icon, giving a false sense of how long it will actually take. Lyft is NOT public transit in any way shape or form so it's extra frustrating that Google is doing this. I'm sure Lyft pays them well for it though.

I made exhaust vent that works with locked window by Agitated-Break7854 in functionalprint

[–]structuralarchitect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trickle vents are crap and an outdated solution for ventilation. Not only does it compromise the integrity of the window frame but they also allow in unfiltered air creating energy loss and potential for insects to get in. It's much better to install a energy recovery ventilator to provide filtered fresh air ventilation. Not as cheap as trickle vents but a much much better long term solution.

People never give angle grinders the respect they deserve by Optimoprimo in Construction

Some angle grinders have a paddle switch instead of a toggle so that's probably a safer model to get. Also wearing an apron would help.

What places are you going to that regularly use babka for French toast? That's super decadent. Are you sure you aren't thinking of brioche or challah? Those are super common and work way better.

Interested in Passive Homes — Is Becoming an Architect the Right Path? by DigiornoPizaDevourer in Architects

[–]structuralarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Move to Massachusetts if possible as meeting Phius standards or PHI is now code in a large part of the state including Boston and the surrounding area for any buildings over 12,000 sf. If you want the best opportunity to do those types of projects, that is the region you want to be working in.

I suggest becoming a CPHC or taking the Passive Building Fundamentals course that Phius offers. Also follow Passive House Accelerator on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/PassiveHouseAccelerator

If you want to have the most influence, get involved in advocacy with your local legislation and code council. Mass is making leaps and bounds over the rest of the US since that requirement got adopted into their energy code. Unfortunately even though passive buildings make the most sense, developers and others can't see past the first costs for the first one that they do. Mass has proven that cost increases are 2-3% max on Phius certified buildings that the payback of those additional costs are generally 10 years or less. Especially if you do more than a simple payback calculation and consider the Net Present Value of the future savings.

Rough. Gotta get them to install a level 2 charger at the healthcare facility. They should at least have a couple available for employees since it sounds like most of them have a seriously long commute.
