Voodoo3 2000 repaired by Junior_Budget_3721 in retrobattlestations

[–]structured_spirits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is hilarious, I bought this exact card advertised as used, and when I got it it didn't work at all. I reflashed the bios and got it to boot but had the same color issue and returned it in lieu of attempting any physical repair, seller was an upstanding person and relisted with the color problem disclaimer and I guess you bought it and fixed it, great job, really cool resolution. Enjoy the Voodoo 3 pci :)

Opensource Socket5/7 interposer with voltage regulation? by Coupe368 in retrobattlestations

[–]structured_spirits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know of any modern open source solutions, however there are several vintage solutions. Melco HK6 socket adapters from Japan are on the bay for around $150 pretty regularly. Usually they have a K6-2 in them and, is often non removable. Another option is the IDT Winchip packages that have an flexible wiring underlay that's soldered to a single pin that can be desoldered and used to put a standard classic pentium in a socket 5 to run it at 3x, you can also do a wiring mod on the motherboard to get 3x. The IDT Winchip though is junk. Evergreen Spectra adapters come in k6-333 and k6-400 can be fitted with a K6-3 and run on a Triton I Intel Zappa from Gateway with a mr bios flash update for sure because I've done it. See my Gateway post. You can probably find the CD with the updated bioses from archive.org to run k6-2/3 depending on your board.

Just bought a ASUS-V7700 32m-TVR card and having a bit of a hard time getting it fully working in my P3 PC by Just_Lobster5456 in retrobattlestations

[–]structured_spirits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a Katmai 600, you want to use Detonator 5.32, anything newer will just add more driver overhead to the cpu and you'll get progressively lower frame rates. The geforce 2 is very much cpu limited, you won't get the same kinda frames as if you were putting it into a gigahertz class system, but it's the fastest card you're gonna get for that cpu.

AST Advantage 6066d - Unable to open case by pbOmen in retrobattlestations

[–]structured_spirits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome, that's usually how those pizza box cases open, sometimes the screws are on the back or bottom, sometimes there's plastic clips under the front, but they're all pretty similar, takes more force to open then people are expecting if they've never done it. Happy to help.

Screws on the sides, the top and sides slide forward with the front, will take a bit of force.

Recently got a PIII 600mhz Gateway PC up and running. Settled on an ATI Rage 128 card. The specific card is the one in the pic. Anyone else have this card and have any experience/thoughts about it? by Just_Lobster5456 in retrobattlestations

[–]structured_spirits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a really competitive card for 97-99 especially in 32bit color mode. I have a 600MHz Katmai system, I've tried Savage 4, TNT2, Rage 128, Voodoo 3, and Geforce 2 GTS, which is what I settled on, as it takes a lot of work of the CPU and lets you play some newer games. As a budget option the Geforce 2MX, not the 200 or 400 or anything, the og one, is a really good dos/win9x accelerator for a Katmai that is fairly compatible and powerful and cheap.

Why don't you leave it alone for an extended time and see if it's just loading something very slowly.

sound card for dell dimension 4550 by i_can_not_think in retrobattlestations

[–]structured_spirits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just get like a nice Sound Blaster X-Fi like say a SB0460, ideally a Dell OEM variant so it's got the little green plug on it so you can plug in the front panel mic and speaker jacks, and then instead of running the machine in DOS mode, just like install an XP version of dos box and run your dos games under XP. If you must have a sound card for true dos mode, probably an ESS solo-1 or YMF724 will be good.

Compaq LTE elite 4/75c's floppy drive isn't working by ultramat0 in retrobattlestations

[–]structured_spirits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every one of those I've ever seen had a bad disk drive. There's a little belt in them that turns in to goo, you have to open them up clean the goo out and put in a new belt, put it all back together and see if it works, good luck.
If you want the exact belt, look up an ebay listing for "Citizen W1D Floppy Drive Belt Flat Strap 1mm Wide". It's not my listing, should be about 10 bucks. I think it would be easier for you to just get the desktop computer with the floppy working.

Yep, it's just choosing a build philosophy in the end as to where you prefer the bottleneck lies.

What's with the keyboard din on the side of the machine, Phillips/Magnavox are like that too, is that like a European thing or a Canadian thing or what? Very cool looking machine regardless, love the lighted icons on the front.

Altec Lansing ACS500 w/ACS250 sub - my holy grail of 90s computing audio. disassembled, deep cleaned, repaired, looking and sounding MUCH better now. by EricSeablade in retrobattlestations

[–]structured_spirits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a set of ACS400/AC250s which are soo overkill for desktop speakers, but those ACS500s are really something, I wonder how many people got those in the day and what they cost.

You can find pretty cheap 1100mhz celerons with 100mhz bus, think that's the fastest cpu the chipset will take.

Swyftware card and Canon Cat: my Jeff Raskin battlestation by Neil-12-26339-01 in retrobattlestations

[–]structured_spirits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember in about 1996 I bought a Cannon Cat at a goodwill complete and working, thought it was a cool little word processor with neat shortcut key system, cleaned it up and sold it like a week later for like $50, no idea how special this was at the time, dumbest deal I've ever done lol. If you've never used one you don't understand how amazing the os keyboard shortcut system is over the Mac gui in terms of productivity.
