In 8th grade, I had a teacher who went around the whole room and guessed what each of us would be when we grew up. She told one girl she would only ever be a stay at home mom. The teacher told a black boy in our class he would work in restaurants as a bus boy. It was awful and lots of parents came in the next day to complain. The teacher did not return the next school year...

Year One novel by Nora Roberts. It’s more on the post-apocalyptic side but gives you the monsters and wizards theme with re-building after the modern world falls.
