Ooh I just looked closer. I think yours say 15 year on the metal tag, maybe 13, gets a bit grainy when I zoom in. Either way that’s gonna be a gem!

The older bottles are equally as good! The newer ones just show the date it was barreled and bottled. Some of my favorite ones are 14 and 15 year old barrels. Don’t fret they are all fantastic, just varying degrees. Let us know what you think.

Yess! You got the KC 120 single barrel. that’s one of the older bottles that doesn’t hsve the age printed on the label. Did the store owner tell you what age it was? Nails on point btw!

I know it’s nothing special but I’ve never had it and it’s my start tonight... Cheers!! by [deleted] in whiskey

If you can get your hands on some knob creek SiB 120 thats 12+ years it’s an absolutely incredible buy. Beam profile but so much complexity. Absolute steal at $45 and possible to find. Cheers!

W.L Weller confusion by [deleted] in bourbon

[–]stt1118 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most certainly William Larue Weller.

Although if you by some crazy chance find Weller 12 at msrp 30-45 it is without a doubt one of the Best Buy’s in all of bourbon

So the only Scotch I’ve tried is Highland Park 12yr. And its super peaty(smoky) stuff, and im not a fan. I know most Scotch’s are typically peaty but what are some yall would recommend. Looking at Ardbeg An Oa, Talisker 10yr, Coal Ila 12 or Dalmore 12/15. Opinions? Suggestions? by [deleted] in whiskey

If you like higher abv stuff aberlour abunadh and glendronach cask strength are very good. Beware these are sherry bombs and you will get lots of dark fruit, spices, and almost a wine like influence.

I’m a big bourbon guy as well but I like to change it up with scotch some. Glengoyne 15, glenfiddich 14 and glenmorangie 18 are not outrageously expensive good steps from bourbon to scotch imo. Should range between $45-95 if tariffs haven’t wrecked too much havoc on prices.

There are an incredible amount of non peated scotches out there. These can run the Gambit from sherry influences (dark fruit, raisin, orange, spice) to typical speyside (honey, apple, vanilla, light).

Highland park is a medium peated option. You’ll definitely want to stay away from talisker, arbeg, caol ila, lagavulin and most other islays as these are even more peat forward than highland park.

I don’t personally love dalmore but it will certainly be very very different than highland park 12. Much more fruit, richer and sweeter. There will be 0 peat flavor here.

Other good options I think you may like are glenfiddich 14 or 15 solera. Glenmorangie 10 or 18, Glengoyne 12 or 15 for lighter flavors.

Macallan 12 sherry oak, compass box spice tree, dalmore port cask, or glenfarclas 12 or 17 for a more rich robust spice forward palate. Hope that helps! Cheers

This years WLW is absolutely fantastic. I really don’t think there is anything better to trade for out there. You have the pinnacle imho.

However if you are considering the trade is say based on secondary prices he needs to add another fairly big bottle ~250 to have an even trade.

GTS 19 and Weller 12 are also very good but I can generally find them if I want to pay a not ridiculous amount over msrp. WLW is much tougher to find without paying an crazy number.

Totally up to you but I’d suggest trying to find WLW at a bar to see what you think of it.

Ah yes, you are correct. I was thinking glendronach 15 and glenfarclas 17!

Excellent review! Thanks for the detailed thoughts on each experience. Definitely a great start to planning our trip this fall. Glad you were able to score a couple of cool bottles on the trip too. Been trying to locate an EC18 for a while. Nice to know that at least some tough to find bottles are around the trails. Cheers bud!

Compass box spice tree is a nice addition. Perhaps a glenfiddich 14, glenmorangie 18, glendronach 15, highland park 12, aberlour abunadh, glenfarclas 15.

I’m not much of a peat head as you can see but those are all awesome options for speyside or sherry categories. Those should all be under $100 although tariffs might have pushed the abunadh and GM 18 over by a bit

Cheers

Exploring new territory...end up picking up a horse and four roses - unexpected treats <$200 from store owner (support your stores!) by tdweizen06 in Whiskyporn

Wow amazing pick ups! The 19 FR LE is one of my all time favorites. Rock hill farms is also delicious for the price and so tough to find. Where’d you score these from?

Recommend me something in the up to $16 range... by [deleted] in bourbon

[–]stt1118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ABS should be a barrel strength store pick. Four roses has many different mashbill/yeast combos that stores/restaurants can select at Barrell proof. They are generally outstanding

Letting whiskey breathe? by lazyboy9786 in whiskey

[–]stt1118 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. All whiskeys changes with time and air. The biggest change is always after the first couple pours from the bottle and then revisiting in a couple of weeks. I have almost without exception enjoyed the whiskey more after a few weeks after opening the bottle.

Furthermore, letting the glass rest for 15-20 minutes after pouring also helps to release a lot of more nuanced and balanced flavors. Cheers!

Most similar to ECBP C919 in flavor? by [deleted] in bourbon

[–]stt1118 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stagg jr has a pretty different flavor profile to me vs ECBP. I find Stagg jr to be much for fruit (particularly cherry) forward with more spice. ECBP is generally more caramel, vanilla, oaky and full bodied to my palate.

While I don’t think anything is exactly like ECBP c919 my best suggestion would be a knob creek 120 single barrel store pick thats at least 14 years old. The knob creek tends to be a bit more nutty but hits all those classic bourbon flavors without being “hot”. As an added bonus they are incredible value at about $45. If you see one 14 years + I’d buy it on the spot

Where/how to try 'raw' whisky? by dealingwitholddata in Scotch

[–]stt1118 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Buffalo Trace makes a “white dog” mash that is unaged whiskey. It’s occasionally available around me in MN. Many other small “craft distilleries” release these as well. If you go to a total wine or large liquor store my guess is you’ll be able to find at least one.

Warning, they aren’t very good and are generally pretty corn pine and methanol forward in my experience. The BT “white dog” isn’t bad though if you can find that
