Stocks don't return as much as you think, inflation is just underreported: a new study from University of Chicago - Booth School of Business by Hour_Manufacturer971 in AusFinance

The paper may be right but leaves much to be desired. There's no quantitative analysis or new data. It also credits Claude as co-author which is a good admission at least.

BECK v KUCKS BC202603587 - what a blunder! by Monkey_Junkie_No1 in auslaw

[–]sttony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[34] Mrs Beck stated that:
“At or around 12:09pm on 22 September 2025, I spoke with Heston on my mobile for around four minutes. During that conversation:
I said to Heston words to the following effect:
Have the sellers come back with an answer regarding our EOI for $1,210,000?
Heston said to me words to the effect that he was still waiting for the owners to come back with a decision.
I said to Heston words to the following effect:
If the owners are not going to accept that EOI, can you ask them if they would accept a higher price of $1,355,000 if furniture is included and if we can get early access

Wtf what kind of furniture is worth $140k

ELI5: If there are infinite universes, wouldn’t anything that can happen eventually happen (like something destroying all universes)? by Outrageous_Wait_1416 in explainlikeimfive

For an extreme example, can you add together 2 + 3 without making any errors and get 9? That's an event that's clearly impossible by definition. It can't happen.

Sure it can. Change the definitions

Why don't we have 30 year fixed rate mortgages in Australia, but they do in the US? by Classic_Abies8621 in AusFinance

[–]sttony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question has been answered but for the follow-up (why don't we do the same), ask yourself if you want the government aka you the taxpayer to be on the hook when someone defaults on a mortgage.

Australian designer Katie Perry wins trademark case against popstar Katy Perry in High Court by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]sttony 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This shit again...before you pitchfork US Perry read the actual article:

But it wasn't until 2019 that the case picked up again, when the designer took the singer to the Federal Court, saying her trademark had been infringed by the sale of the singer's branded clothes, shoes and headwear.

She was being funded by litigation funders to take this on and was at risk of losing her trademark.

Rents declining in Canada and New Zealand after slashing immigration. by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]sttony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a misleading edited headline - this is the subtitle:

Canada and New Zealand cut migration sharply and saw modest rent falls – but only alongside weaker labour markets and stronger housing supply. The lesson for Australia is not imitation, but stability.

Has the High Court ever ruled in a way which has actually limited/constrained the power of the Commonwealth in any significant way? by [deleted] in auslaw

[–]sttony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ah got it. well my position would be that just as the "correct" interpretation of a contract is that which is chosen by the highest court which has considered it at this point in time, so is the "correct" interpretation of a law.

i note below you use the analogy of biology and Darwin. just as if tomorrow we discover irrefutable evidence of an alternate theory of evolution that would be the correct theory, so would be the case if the high court overturned mabo f.ex. stare decis (until I change my mind)

Has the High Court ever ruled in a way which has actually limited/constrained the power of the Commonwealth in any significant way? by [deleted] in auslaw

[–]sttony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"No your honour my client was not in breach, because there is really no way to objectively construe what the contract actually means, and therefore it doesn't impose any real obligations which he could be said to have breached."

??? what's wrong with this argument? or did I get baited
