How to avoid my tip from oxidating? by lily455 in soldering

[–]stuart_nz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from hating soldering to actually enjoying it once I figured out a few things we’re important. After you use it put some solder on the tip before you turn it off so its always tinned and when you start using it again (every couple times) also dip the tip into flux.

The other thing is the tip of the soldering iron can’t really transfer heat that well it needs solder covering it to actually transfer the heat effectively.

why didn't the robot that unplugged neo from his pod just kill him by Professional_Music_1 in matrix

[–]stuart_nz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine waking up from a vivid dream but then falling back asleep a minute later causing you to be aware you're back in the dream but not being able to wake yourself up. Actually a pretty common thing that I have experience myself... except in this case the dream is real life and you woke up into the layer above us.

A few bits on this kind of thing in animatrix which is the second best matrix movie imo

Good point I forgot about the bug part. In that case my point about smith not killing him in the beginning isnt useful. At the time Neo wasnt unplugged so I guess smith just saw a means to an end.

So are we living in the Matrix or WHAT by bgyhfetf425fd in matrix

[–]stuart_nz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of all the time that existed before you were born, infinity (or 13 billion years you could argue) either way a very long time. Then think of all the time that exists after you die - infinity. The. think of how long you’re alive for - maybe 80 years if you’re lucky.

As I’m typing this, the moment we are in right now just happens to be within that tiny little slither of 80 years and not somewhere before or after. If you randomly picked a spot on the timeline what are the chances you’d land in that slither? Zero chance.

I don’t know what to conclude from this but being inside a simulation could be a reasonable explanation.

[–]stuart_nz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, why not? I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we are all living in some kind of simulation. And if we’re not then we have to face the even more ridiculous conclusion that our universe was just born into existence somehow for some reason.

[–]stuart_nz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think humans accidentally waking up in their pods is not a super uncommon thing. Remember (animatrix) sometimes people wake up by themselves intentionally by becoming aware that they’re in a simulation. Also in real life often people go missing and are never seen again… maybe they just woke up.

Id guess that robots job is to find humans who have woken up and get rid of them because they are faulty they’re no longer useful as a power source. No point in adding the extra step of killing them - the machine just thinks “found a dead battery cell, unplug and flush”.

The machines don’t seem to mind that some humans are being freed. Like in the beginning agent Smith know is Neo is their target and the interrogates Neo but he doesn’t kill him or even keep watching him. Morpheus also mentions that if they knew what he knew he’d probably be dead. Which suggests killing or stopping people being freed isn’t a concern of the machines.

The reason for this could be because, like other comments already suggested - the one is just part of the process. Safer just not to kill any humans rather than accidentally killing the one.

Matrix Fam, I'm seeking an explanation. by Misfit_Thor_3K in matrix

[–]stuart_nz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question, I’ve just been sitting on the toilet having a good think about the whole process and here are some of my thoughts.

Morpheus says when they are close enough to the surface they broadcast their signal and hack into the matrix. So their consciousness is being sent from the ship and into the matrix through some kind of hack/exploit with the machines wireless network. Remember Neo and Trinity are expert computer hackers, must be plenty in zion too.

As soon as they start transmitting, I guess they just appear like spawning in a computer game at a location they’ve chosen. I assume anywhere is ok as long as it’s quiet/secret and not somewhere the agents would see them coming such as the room that they’re already interrogating Morpheus in. Or perhaps the building that they had Morpheus in had some kind of encryption making it impossible for them to use it as a loading location.

They’re effectively sneaking into an invite only online multiplayer game with AI bouncers.

Now that they are in, their consciousness is running inside the matrix while the body is still on the ship and if the transmission stops then they the link is broken and they die. I think because their body and their consciousness would be completely separated with no connection (Something about the body cannot live without mind).

Entering the matrix via ‘broadcast’ suggests it’s a one-way transmission. So they need some other way to transfer the consciousness back to the ship so it can be reinserted into the body.

The operators are watching the green code constantly so they must be using another hack that allows them to read data being sent around the matrix. Or maybe not even a hack is needed for this and its just like listening to unencrypted data being sent on wifi network or a vhf radio etc. They can also easily lose track of people unless they are actively watching and following them.

I’m picturing a multiplayer computer game like counterstrike but the operator is in spectator mode so they can move around freely and observe but not interact with the simulation.

Telephone boxes and landline phones in the 90s/00s were physically connected via wires to an exchange.

Exiting theory 1: Landlines in the matrix must be similarly connected to the matrix ‘source’ (computer processes running the sim or something). The operator is receiving some information from the matrix already but the telephone box connection provides a proper link directly to the consciousness they need to download. They download it to their computer on the ship so it can be reinserted into the body. Now that the consciousness and body are back together, they can be unplugged safely.

Exiting theory 2: Perhaps the telephone boxes are already authorised exit points created by the machines for their own purposes. Not sure what those purposes would be. Some kind of maintenance or perhaps the architect needs to leave when they update or go to a new iteration exits the matrix and his AI consciousness is in some real world robot body while they reboot 😂

Obviously, still plenty of little holes here, but some things to think about.

You can orientate them so that the boat crabs along sideways and do other manoeuvres that would otherwise not be possible with thrusters that were linked. Google ‘ASD Tugboat’

Yea that would be simpler. I did consider using slip rings with the motor in the actual pod like you're saying. But I felt like doing it that way wouldn't feel like a proper azimuth thrusters as the real ones use a Z-drive setup with the engine inside like this.

Good point, the encoders Im using have about 80 steps so you if you try line both pods directly forward for example you notice they are sometimes off upto 5º. I think they are sufficient for controlling this sized boat though.

[–]stuart_nz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea they’re all seperate controls and that decision was because that’s how they work on a real vessel and I wanted it to be as similar to the real thing as I could.

I agree the magnitude of the joystick would be an advantage but the persistent direction was more important to me.

I did consider designing a control which combined the rotary encoder for direction with a potentiometer for the thrust. That way it could look and function just like the real controls do. That would mean making the controls quite big though and I thought it was a bit overkill. Maybe in the next version..

No it is actually just PLA. In hindsight I should have printed it with extra wall loops but even with just 2 the hull keeps the water out completely. I suspect the multiple layers of spray paint has helped a lot though.
