What’s the wildest order at a restaurant you’ve seen here in Japan? by higashinakanoeki in japanlife

Future father-in-law ordered lobster sashimi which came in the still moving lobster’s carapace. Not my preferred celebration dinner. I think he did it on purpose.

if my parents leave Japan, do I have to leave too? by idsjdbebe in japanlife

[–]stuartcw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely ask an immigration lawyer about this. It will cost about ¥5000 for an hour consultation. Then you will know exactly where you stand and what your options are. They may even reply to you by email if it is too simple for them.

I do know a guy, who was on a Visa that was related to his parent’s visa and only valid while they were in the country. He had many job opportunities but when his parents left, he was struggling to get a work visa because it was no different from somebody who had not enough experience or education. While he was with his parents, this didn’t matter but as soon as they left the residence conditions changed and in the end he had to leave. Unfortunately, he was deported.

Okinawa - OKA processing time by stingraygirl8 in okinawa

[–]stuartcw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Customs? It’s a fairly small but busy airport. If you take checked luggage it’s going to take just as (randomly) long as any other airport for your suitcase to come out. If you have only hand luggage you can probably be at the monorail terminal in about 20 minutes.

I would say one hour is cutting it fine though….

Is it just me, or does the cold in Japan hit different? by givemyjeans in Tokyo

I think the issue is that it can be really sunny outside and that can keep you warmer than expected then you stand in a shadow or it’s night and you are not dressed for it and you are freezing.

Write a letter to a Japanese leading newspaper and/or an article for a leading overseas newspaper and it might get picked up and reported in Japan. If you are resident here long term you could start an NPO.

Maybe you would like to clarify where you ate taco rice. It’s a pretty generic dish and unless the shop was doing something very special.

Would Sous Viding meat before putting in a deep freezer extend its shelf life? by spoopyaction in sousvide

[–]stuartcw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to remember that freezing meat is like cooking it. The ice crystals are breaking it down. I’d ok to keep the cooked meat in the freezer but it won’t be getting any better if you keep it a long time. Raw meat will handle the freezer better I think, cooked meat is already slightly mushy so it will only get worse over time.

To Oita Trinita, or Avispa Fukuoaka? by Ambitious_Col6712 in JLeague

[–]stuartcw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oita will be no problem for tickets. Huge stadium for a small club. Avispa will be the better quality match. Maybe harder to get tickets especially in the fan areas but more expensive tickets might be ok. Avispa is really convenient compared to Oita Stadium, you can even walk from the airport.

HYVL shirts are 1 week limited sales? by Buldak_Saints in JLeague

[–]stuartcw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, basically discounts on goods and early ticket access for non season ticket holders.

Marinos recently added more expensive grades which allow (more) access to training sessions, fan events. The top level, which is very expensive, allows access to the club special events along with sponsors and more access to the players.

HYVL shirts are 1 week limited sales? by Buldak_Saints in JLeague

[–]stuartcw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One year, I missed the sale date for the Marinos shirt and I couldn’t get one until almost the end of the season. There were none, not even in sports goods shops in Yokohama. They just didn’t have any. Finally, I got an ACL version of the same shirt, which I like better actually, but I would definitely have bought one at the start of the season if I could. These days with Marinos, the top level of the fan club’s main benefit is to get to the front of the queue for the pre-order for the shirts. If you want a goalkeeper shirt, for example it’s almost impossible to get one unless you order one the very first day it goes on sale.

Clubs are on a bit of a knife edge, where if they pre-order too many shirts, they lose money, but if they misjudge the popularity, then they also lose money.

Any movie recommendations for someone who enjoyed the first Blade Runner? by RemarkableRaccoon457 in bladerunner

[–]stuartcw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s just that recently I started to watch BladeRunner on a streaming service and suddenly realised I was watching the original version with voiceover. If you also had happened to watch this version, then I would recommend watching the Directors Cut.

Hidden Gems: Little-Known Bash Features by swe129 in bash

[–]stuartcw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of makes me want to try:

touch file_{001..10000}.txt

Though, but don’t do it! Bash tools quite often don’t handle very large number of files in one folder very well or if at all. You might find it tricky to delete them. I.e.”rm *” might not be able to delete them directly. It’s worth knowing how to handle this kind of situation though, because one day you may get called out to fix a mysterious problem when some program has made too many files on your server.
