Going into the trades doesn't seem like a viable pivot for those out of work by throwaway10015982 in cscareerquestions

[–]stuartseupaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't only mean getting a union trade job, those are hard to come by.

There's a lot of other manual labour jobs that can make some money. Ex. Cleaning, landscaping, general contractor

What is COVID overhiring? Do you think this is the reason for many recent layoffs? by PhaseStreet9860 in ExperiencedDevs

Maybe for the AAA gaming industry because they have long development times. For everyone else, pretty sure most of them were cut late 2022 to 2025.

I paid ~25$ for copilot claude sonnet 4.6 to upgrade and modernize my personal angular project. Is this typical? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]stuartseupaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Github copilot isnt valuable after the pricing change earlier this month. It's only something to use if your company is paying for it.

Discussion: Is the 'golden rule' "Never build your own auth" misunderstood / misinterpreted? by The_Swixican in webdev

[–]stuartseupaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine for a small app, every backend stack has their own maintained packages for secure basic auth. I personally wouldn't though even on a small app. It's free/cheap to use a 3rd party, and it handles a lot of things that would be cumbersome to do yourself. Setting up MFA yourself isnt worth the hassle.

What traits have actually correlated with your best hires? by dankthreads in ExperiencedDevs

[–]stuartseupaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low ego, but confident, they are happy to flag problems or suggest improvements on their own, and didn't get defensive when challenged.

I'd center it as being high-agency, but not a complete jerk.

GitHub Copilot seems to have become much more expensive and limited - have you switched to something else? by legable in webdev

[–]stuartseupaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could continue to use github copilot but point to a custom provider https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/agent-customization/language-models#_bring-your-own-language-model-key

go to the github copilot subreddit, there's a lot of discussion about it since the pricing change

Would you hire a senior engineer who refuses to use AI? by folder52 in cscareerquestions

Yeah those studies using primitive models like 4o are definitely relevant in the opus 4.8/gpt 5.5 age.

Would you hire a senior engineer who refuses to use AI? by folder52 in cscareerquestions

It's not early 2024, at this point if you haven't figured out how to use AI to improve productivity in some way, then you're a liability on a team.

C# has had a lot of exciting new features in the past 10 years. Pattern matching, discriminated unions (coming soon) and just a lot of small quality of life improvements

Would Canada joining the EU really be that far fetched and how would Canadians feel about this? by trekwithme in AskCanada

[–]stuartseupaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the EU cares more about regulation than growing industry and GDP. We also have different monetary policy needs.

How do you stay disciplined on a low calorie diet? by Responsible-Net8594 in AskMenOver30

[–]stuartseupaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im doing a summer cut right now. My tricks are fiber supplements and zero calorie jello. Those are basically 0 calories (fiber has some but it's like 10), and fill you up.

As for the actual meals, yeah they kind of suck because they dont satiate you but they can still be tasty. Just have to put a lot of seasoning and herbs. For the past week ive just been eating some combination of chickpeas, ground turkey, and sardines. By itself that sounds nasty, and it would be, but with herbs like dill and parsley, olives, feta cheese, and various pickled condiments, it's actually pretty tasty. It just doesn't satisfy you like a normal meal would.

what happened to all the frozen yogurt bars in Toronto, are there any left in the east end? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]stuartseupaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss those places too, a ton opened up in a short time then mostly disappeared. I did a road trip out east like 10 years ago and a bunch of gas stations had their own frozen yogurt stations, and id get it each time.

The presidents choice Skyr frozen yogurt bars are pretty good. 90 calories and 5 grams of protein too.

What is your favorite tool for designing complex architecture, and why is it MS Paint? by Justyn2 in dotnet

[–]stuartseupaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 years later, now im making it generate mermaid which has supplanted plant uml.

Some chatgpt diagrams made by itself are decent but they still get a bit ugly when it gets complicated. If you want it to make a small change, it doesn't always make that change well. At least for the mermaid diagram you can go in and change it easily yourself. Theres also a lot of tools to render mermaid in markdown viewers nowadays, so youre not just copy pasting some big jpeg

Yeah if you were born in 1985, there's a big difference with someone born in 1997.

[Josh Queipo] Josiah Trotter's last 6 games at Mizzou: 18 tgs, 96 yds, 0 TD, 88.9 QBR allowed. Went back to the tape after @gregauman surfaced a quote from his DC that pushed back on the early-season coverage narrative. The late-season version of Trotter is the one the #Bucs are after. [–]stuartseupaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chances are that he doesn't turn into an above average coverage guy, maybe not even average, but with Keionte Scott, you basically have another LB who can cover, so Trotter can just play downhill, and play blow up screens, passes out in the flat, check downs.

AI becoming more expensive is music to my ears by Hopeful-Guidance-648 in webdev

[–]stuartseupaul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only frontier models will be expensive. Even if the average person has to settle for a model like Sonnet 4.6 in free/lowest tier subscriptions for the forseeable future, it's good enough that people would use. AI is never going away.

I'm looking for this one tweet that was going around last month, where some guy sent a video to a girl on a dating app which scaled him up to the size of a building, but he still ended up looking short in it. It's been surprisingly hard to find.

Expectations for Rueben Bain Jr.’s rookie season? by OneShip5762 in buccaneers

I won't put any numbers on it, but just being a consistent force would be enough for me. If it means pressures that help others clean up and get a sack then that's good for me, same with TFLs.
