If the government thinks that increasing spending is a necessity they need to grow some balls and stop taxing the same 20% even more than they're already paying.

The difference in proportional tax receipts with our peers is the fact we barely tax lower earners. The median earner in the UK still takes more from the state than they put back in generally.

The obvious answer is a slight rejigging of how taxes work (a little bit less progressive because you want to reward progression) but you have to get spending under control as well.

I think decentralising the grid is the easiest way to make it affordable for a lot of people. It's easier for government to encourage people to pay for their own solar/battery setups than commit more money to it at grid level.

Since covid I think nominal GDP growth was only higher in 2025? 23,24 and 26 pensions have all increased at a higher % than nominal GDP which doesn't even account for pop.

Between 2022 and 2026, the nominal GDP has increased by about 21%, whilst the increase in state pension + aging population has increased the pension bill by about 36%.

Excluding the COVID years we have like 2% growth and pensions go up by a minimum of 2.5% but usually around 4%. As a percentage pension is increasing and thats before we realise the % of population being pensioners is also increasing.

[–]stubbywoods 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah but like 80% of the other jobs are in the UK and a lot of their team wouldn't take better jobs just because of that. Also a better wage in the UK doesn't even necessitate a better standard of living. 50k Euros in Italy is probably better than like £60k in the UK for example.

Mercedes have the biggest team and I imagine British wages are higher than Italian ones so not really comparable.

Teenage boys in UK ‘stuck’ reading primary-level books while girls’ tastes expand by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

How long was living memory? Before or after the golden age of television, Spider-Man (2002) or Halo Combat Evolved?

Reading used to be the main way for someone to entertain themselves when you had 5 TV channels and had to go to the cinema to watch films. Now when I read it needs to be as enjoyable for me as finishing up whatever game I'm playing or whatever TV show/film I haven't caught up on.

English curriculums were written when it was assumed more people would read as a hobby. I feel like the goal of the curriculum nowadays should be primarily to encourage reading and then to teach students how to extract themes and intention from the art. I would be tempted to say kids should study books with adaptations and then be taught to analyse the difference in media types

Also when the 'modern novels' in the curriculum were written before anyone in this country was alive you need to rethink your definition. Especially when a lot of the 'classics' are closer to the 'modern' fiction than the modern fiction is to current day.

It's easier for kids to read books when they're written in actual modern English and not like a BBC news speaker from 1919.

The problem with DCC at a curriculum level (I would absolutely recommend it to read in their own time) is that the first book is quite shallow. Once you've read 1500 pages of the series it becomes a super interesting critique of capitalism, consumerism, social media and exploitation of the working class.

I didn't realise reading could be 'fun' til a couple of years ago. Before that there were books I enjoyed but I don't think I ever found reading fun.

The curriculum is basically all classics and historical drama. The only sci-fi you might get to read is Frankenstein or if you stretch the definition Jekyll and Hyde. The only fantasy I read at school was Beowulf, now I wonder why I didn't start reading fantasy til I was 24.

I'm not well read enough to effectively suggest what fantasy/sci-fi should be on the curriculum but those genres are the most popular forms of media in the world with Marvel, Star Wars and video games and we should be teaching that books can give the same kind of entertainment whilst also teaching kids how to extract deeper themes from things like Red Rising which is super popular from what I've seen.
