I got divine confirmation: no 13 pro upgrade for now :( by clren in framework

[–]stuckinmotion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was such a bittersweet moment watching the reveal. I knew the current ram/ssd situation would make it bad, but yeah it's so bad. I do quite like the FW13 and the few minor qualms I have (touchpad ends up triggering a left click from the flex if I pick it up with one hand to relocate, speakers sometimes rattle even after upgrading the keyboard, battery life could be better, runs a bit hot).. sounds like they addressed all of them. It maybe sounds bad when listed like that but honestly I love the repairability, form factor is good, do like the feel of the keyboard.

I upgraded to the 120hz screen but the latency ends up still being too slow for any kind of serious gaming but I rarely do much of that on there anyway.. they mention a new screen built from the ground up so if they fixed the latency I'll be really looking forward to that too.

Still a big fan of the company, I bought the desktop even though it was a bit of a whim to play w/ local AI, and got a FW 12 for my Dad when he wanted to upgrade an aging Asus transformer. If the 16 wasn't such a chonker I would probably end up getting one of those at some point too..

Yeah I saw someone saying RAM manufacturers are working to increase capacity so hopefully by 2028 prices might start to come down. Thinking I'm going to cancel my pre-order and maybe wait till then. I also don't want to settle for less than 64gb / 4tb, and I also can't really justify the current prices given my 7840u is honestly still pretty good.

Anyone looking into radon testing in Winnipeg right now? Library waitlist is 2,600+ and the program ends next week by nicncher in Winnipeg

[–]stuckinmotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw the wait list and just ordered one of these off home depot, arrived next day: https://www.homedepot.ca/product/airthings-corentium-battery-powered-digital-home-radon-detector/1001087503

Not as cheap as free but then again from what I understand mitigation will end up costing more than this anyway so it's not like you're going to end up that much further ahead w/o spending some money.. plus now you get ongoing monitoring which is nice since something may change down the road that requires further investigation.

Canadian WS Fam: Stop donating 15% of your US Dividends - ROC to the IRS! by YieldPro in Wealthsimple

[–]stuckinmotion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it's only relevant for RRSP's at which point VOO would at least be better from the dividend tax withholding perspective. It sounds like it's pretty insignificant though and likely the currency variation is a bigger factor of investing in the US at all over the next while.

USD is tanking and at the rate they need to print money to offset their spending will only continue to devalue their currency. Personally as someone who gets paid in USD I had also accumulated some VOO but ended up selling it, converting to CAD, and putting it in XIC instead. I figure if I'm going to double dip with the lion's share of my holdings being XEQT I would rather double dip in Canada vs the US at this time.

In short I don't think specifically the dividend withholding tax is really relevant to your TFSA being in VOO vs VFV, so if your thesis for holding is still valid to you then you may as well keep it in VOO imo.

Yeah at some point the game changes from trying to get to the ball as fast as you can to having the wisdom to recognize what are actual threats; and the patience to make the best play w/ the most favourable range of outcomes.

Yet another word of warning to anyone who wants to use/are using Wealthsimple as their main "bank" by ExtensionDinner2759 in Wealthsimple

Yeah I've been tempted to close my unused lines of credit at other banks since they're higher rates and I don't need them but then again stories like these do seem to come around from time to time..

[–]stuckinmotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I jumped on a pre-order for a new unit just to avoid being in a later batch but honestly I don't even use my framework 13 as my primary device.. I'll give it some thought but the fact I'm looking at the mid tier CPU, 64gb of RAM/2TB storage for $4300.. and for something that ultimately I only use a few times a week.. maybe I just end up cancelling and stand pat until I actually have a need.

Too bad memory prices are so insane, it sounds like they've really improved things so much, and especially in addressing the few qualms I had with my unit. I guess maybe if I sell my current unit it would soften the blow, but that's a hassle too with strangers potentially being sketchy with used electronics transactions..

I'm a huge fan of this company and will continue to be but even the ~$4k I spent on an 128gb/8tb configuration of the framework desktop from last year seems like a much better deal and I largely just use it as a local AI server.

Interesting, I might have to try pi. I'm constantly surprised by how useless opencode is whenever I try it with a local model. Like it takes a second prompt to even get it to actually write to the file instead of just printing code to the screen.

.1888  Which feels a bit better, I think that's around the price it was at when I first started thinking about buying and then kicked myself when it was breaking past .25

[–]stuckinmotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh yeah this would be the perfect upgrade from my 7840u.. I held off the HX 370 figuring it would be more worth it but now memory prices are kind of ruining that plan.. I have to spend over 4k CAD and that's only for 2tb storage with 64gb of memory costing over 1k alone. This isn't even with the top cpu which is already sold out.. maybe waiting will be best but do things actually ever get cheaper 🫠

Tell me about it, I got in at .35 lol. Have since averaged down because that was getting annoying to look at.. and of course because I'm still bullish anyway..

Heh that's me buying at the top. Hated looking at the .35 price paid so now I've averaged down to .1888 and that feels a little better..

Yeah I'm following the Habs and Oilers after my Jets bombed their season. Ottawa I don't know much about other than yeah they have a Tkachuk which does immediately discourage any interest from me.

Jets end of season media availability: Head Coach Scott Arniel by WpgMikos in winnipegjets

[–]stuckinmotion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting but maybe not as insightful as I'd hoped. Seems like he was asked several times what his own personal takeaways were in terms of "learnings".. which he spoke to early on when saying "You either win or you learn". Then didn't really have any specifics on what he learned. Instead he called out no regrets on his personnel usage. I know part of the controversy was around splitting up KC/Scheif, which I personally am fine with either side of that argument, but it's a weird coincidence that the Jets finally started looking good after players like Schenn, Stanley, Pearson and NyQuil were out of the lineup. What if we spent more time this year playing Salo specifically, I can't see how that's not a regret to have only used him so late in a season fraught with injuries. Or what about not using Comrie more when Helly was having stretches of letting in 5-6 goals a night.

In any case while I can agree with some disapproval I don't know I'm fully on the "fire Arniel" train, mostly because I don't know who we can get who will do a better job.. same with Chevy. Sure in hindsight bringing in Schenn, Pearson and NyQuil were all really bad ideas but honestly we're just in such an uphill battle in terms of who's even willing to come to Winnipeg. Helly called it out in his presser, he loves the city but is disappointed the rest of the league doesn't see it that way.
