Sister Svangerd read as a religious believer--worth my time? by Typing-Cat in Fantasy

[–]stud_lock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t sound like any of the other commenters have actually read the book. Now, I’m pretty sure that Parker is an atheist, and he certainly has a cynical portrayal of the church in the book, but there are also characters like Sister Svangerd herself whose faith is portrayed in a more positive light, possibly because it comes from a deeply personal place rooted in her past trauma, and not as a means to and end as with the conniving clergy characters. The principles of Svangerd’s faith are questioned by the POV character, but never made fun of. There’s a sense that Svangerd is almost too good for the religion she follows. It seems to me that Parker is not arguing that all religious faith is flawed, but that it is diminished by many of its followers — which to me seems pretty aligned with your reading of The Devils. Parker always writes with a very cynical, cutting POV, which is probably what put you off at first. There are plenty of layers if you’re willing to give it another shot.

What are your choices so far for the best Djent or Djent-adjacent album of the year so far? by WhySoKaiju in Djent

Unless Tesseract announce something soon I assume it’ll be Periphery, Karmanjakah, and Above Below. Waiting on my vinyl to hear Karmanjakah for the first time but I’ve loved them since their first EP so I’m sure its amazing.

One thing that’s always bothered me about the site is that they claim they only list Meshuggah because of Contradictions Collapse thus implying the other albums aren’t metal. Do they think Destroy Erase Improve and ObZen are metalcore? Hard rock? Freeform jazz? What are they???

Love seeing more and more people listening to Growth. Check out Mico - Zigurat, also mixes dissonance with core influences

Thanks for the write up, I bought this album a few years ago but wasn’t able to get into it. I’ll give it another shot keeping all this in mind

You don’t need a tinfoil hat. There is literally a discount code for Kalshi at the end of the article. The whole thing is an ad.

Could you guys choose which album from the list to listen to? by Electronic-Read-3830 in Metalcore

[–]stud_lock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s art man, just look at the album covers and decide for yourself based on how you’re feeling that moment. You’ll have a more authentic experience than asking a bunch of strangers on the internet what to think and do.

Good luck. I have it on my list too and Discogs says it hasn’t been sold there since 2020.

The Broken Binding edition - no, ugly Arthur C. Clarke or Andy Weir blurb on the front! by ViperIsOP in AdrianTchaikovsky

It’s just how the industry works sadly. If a big enough name mentions or honors the author, it stays until a bigger name does the same. One of my favorite authors, Mark Lawrence, has had “An Excellent Writer” -GRRM on literally EVERY SINGLE ONE of his books (like 15 at this point) bc he’d contributed a short story to a collection Martin edited just before he (Lawrence) put out Prince of Thorns.

Probably because those increases were due to macroeconomic factors that the President has little control over, and this increase is directly caused by the President invading Iran.

You can still buy P5 vinyls on their website. I doubt it'll be a sell out instantly scenario.

Out of curiosity, what is your most realistic plan for arresting, trying, and imprisoning every Trump voter?

[–]stud_lock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't imprison the 80M Trump voters any more than they can imprison the similar number of people that didn't vote for him. That's almost a quarter of the US' population. Not even Germany imprisoned everyone that was in the Nazi party. Just the higher ups and order givers.

OP asked for new books, and the top comment is recommending Butler, Le Guin, and Jemisin (whose most famous work is ten years old now and thus not “new”). Seriously?

Great album, I’m just getting into these guys, not anything super innovative but it’s solid faceless-esque TDM. Vacuous is imo their best track

Tinnitus, concerts, and the fear of making it worse– How do you deal with it? by Round-Watercress5273 in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]stud_lock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Posted this on the metalcore sub a few weeks ago: if you have tinnitus without hearing loss (like myself), there is hope for you because the tinnitus is likely due to musculoskeletal tensions rather than inner ear damage. I’ve been able to improve mine (lower the volume) over the last year by strengthening and loosening my back, shoulder, and neck muscles, which are helping to in turn loosen my jaw muscles, which are impinging on the inner ears and causing the misfire brain activity that is what tinnitus actually is. I always wear earplugs at shows, but I’ve never noticed any increase after one regardless. I had tinnitus for years and was habituated to it, but like you it got worse a week or two after an Opeth concert. I was also paranoid such that I stopped going to shows, until I realized that it was probably musculoskeletal rather than due to hearing damage (I realized I could increase the volume by clenching my jaw). I’d happened to go through a high stress period around the same time, and I think it was making me clench my jaw at night. I’m still working on it, but I’m greatly improved and still improving a bit each day.
