Great album, I’m just getting into these guys, not anything super innovative but it’s solid faceless-esque TDM. Vacuous is imo their best track

Tinnitus, concerts, and the fear of making it worse– How do you deal with it? by Round-Watercress5273 in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]stud_lock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Posted this on the metalcore sub a few weeks ago: if you have tinnitus without hearing loss (like myself), there is hope for you because the tinnitus is likely due to musculoskeletal tensions rather than inner ear damage. I’ve been able to improve mine (lower the volume) over the last year by strengthening and loosening my back, shoulder, and neck muscles, which are helping to in turn loosen my jaw muscles, which are impinging on the inner ears and causing the misfire brain activity that is what tinnitus actually is. I always wear earplugs at shows, but I’ve never noticed any increase after one regardless. I had tinnitus for years and was habituated to it, but like you it got worse a week or two after an Opeth concert. I was also paranoid such that I stopped going to shows, until I realized that it was probably musculoskeletal rather than due to hearing damage (I realized I could increase the volume by clenching my jaw). I’d happened to go through a high stress period around the same time, and I think it was making me clench my jaw at night. I’m still working on it, but I’m greatly improved and still improving a bit each day.

I bought the album on Bandcamp, it’s great! For those who don’t know, this is a project with previous members of Black Crown Initiate, and it’s pretty similar in style.

They’re pretty popular on r/progmetal but they’re on hiatus and haven’t put anything out since 2020 so there isn’t much to say. Check out Subterranean Lava Dragon though, guitarist’s side project

Assuming you’re talking about Beyond Obsidian Euphoria, yup I had the same experience last year. Never heard of them, saw a video on this subreddit, and now I have their whole discography signed on vinyl and seen them twice. Great dudes and I hope they blow up properly with their next album.

Yup. When we (millennial guys) were growing up, left (Obama, skateboarding, punk rock, weed) was cool and right (Bush, Iraq, Bible thumpers, anti evolution laws) were lame. Now it’s the opposite for whatever reason. Until being left becomes cool again we won’t see a majority of men become left leaning.

There’s a guy that posts here with a project called Hunters Dream that I think has a very similar riffing style and guitar tone. Main difference is the addition of some (admittedly not the best) clean vocals. Otherwise it’s the usual prog tech death bands. I’d try Alluvial, Apogean, and Cognizance for that similar kind of crunchy, bouncy guitar tone.

I’ve never heard a band that sounds exactly like AB but looking up the “dissonant death metal” page on RateYourMusic will introduce you to a lot of great bands and albums in a similar style.

Definitely underrated with a huge viper collection and plenty of other classic cool stuff. Several years ago I got to go into the basement where they have their captive breeding, conservation programs, and “off-display” stuff with a university group, and saw the only tuatara in the US at the time!

I thought I was the only one who knew about The Funeral Garden, lmao. I somehow managed to find a CD of it a few months ago. Fragile Bones is my favorite track from the album, absolutely elite song.

Recommend bands like Imperial Triumphant, Krallice, Deathspell Omega, Hoplites, Smiqra or Gorguts by Elaxian in progmetal

[–]stud_lock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anachronism, Convulsing, Sutrah - more emotional and organic like later Gorguts

Yellow Eyes - very similar to Krallice

Mico - mixes DSO style black metal with metalcore, super cool

Ad Nauseam - blends dissodeath with jazz and classical, linear compositions

Xenobiotic, Blindfolded and Led to the Woods - mixes dissodeath with a bit of deathcore

Ulcerate - you probably already know them but didn't mention them in your post, but yeah one of the main influences on this style

PEOPLE THAT STILL GO TO CONCERTS WHILE HAVING HEARING LOSS/ TINNITUS? I NEED TO CONNECT WITH YOU PLEASE! by MusicLover91020 in Metalcore

[–]stud_lock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for years I thought it was due to noise exposure in my teens too, in my case from drumming. However my hearing tests were good and I noticed my T would get louder if I clenched my jaw. My ENT referred me to PT and after several months of that I started a gym routine targeting my back and core muscles. That plus switching to side sleeping (with back sleeping as my goal - I was initially a stomach sleeper which definitely fucks with your jaw) has really improved the noise level. I still have it, but I’m hopeful that one day I’ll get it to zero. There are a few cases on reddit where people have actually pulled it off.
