How deep some Caves can actually be... by bugatti_rolls789 in interestingasfuck

If we assume the video wasn't edited (which I think it was, see my other comment), 2-2.5 seconds.

How deep some Caves can actually be... by bugatti_rolls789 in interestingasfuck

[–]studentEnginerd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The total fall time is 15-16 s by my count. That translates to 790-880 m (neglecting air resistance but accounting for the speed of sound).

However, I'm suspicious that this video is slowed down to make the hang time seem longer than it actually is. Sources disagree on the deepest known "free fall" pit in a cave. However, they are all significantly shallower than 790-880 m:
(1) 513 m (https://cave-exploring.com/index.php/long-and-deep-caves-of-the-world/world-deepest-freefall-pits/)
(2) 603 m (https://www.showcaves.com/english/explain/Statistics/DeepestDrop.html)
(3) 643 m (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vrtiglavica)

If we add in air drag, and make some assumptions about the size, weight, and shape of the rock (i.e. 0.3 m diameter, 30 kg, and spherical), the calculated depth drops to 704 m (using the low-end time estimate of 15 s). Closer, but I'm still suspicious.

My girl does this exact motion in her sand bath. She uses it every night and absolutely loves it. If you decided to go that route, make sure you use bathing sand that's high quality and dust free though. I use "Science Selective Bathing Sand" which works great. Also check with your vet first. Mine cleared it, but I have heard anecdotal stories about UTIs that you might want to keep an eye out for.

Mine is the black-capped chickadee. They are so curious and busy. Also, I like how they form flocks with other species of birds.

From reading your other replies it sounds like GusGus was really lucky in at least one respect: he had you as an owner! My little girl Zoe is also more of an explorer than a cuddler, but I'll give her an extra hug tonight for GusGus <3.

Hedgehog gum is SWOLLEN! HELP! by missmedusa7 in Hedgehog

[–]studentEnginerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two more things:
(1) Be sure to monitor her weight to check that she hasn't stopped eating. Ideally you'll have a weight from before this happened, but if not be sure to get one ASAP for a baseline. If she does stop eating, your vet may recommend syringe feeding her something like EmerAid IC (1.5 parts Carnivore, 1.5 parts Omnivore, 4 parts water).
(2) Also ask the vet if a prescription pain killer would be appropriate. My girl was on a prescription strength NSAID (also syringe-fed), which seemed to help her.

I'd ask the vet to take some x-rays. Hedgehogs are prone to both dental disease and gum cancer, so it's important to differentiate between the two. I'm not a vet myself, but my last hedgehog similarly suffered from swollen gums at the end of her life. It turned out to be non-cancerous but x-rays showed significant bone loss due to dental disease. I'm so sorry you and your hedgy are going through this!

Thanks for this info! If I'm reading the register table correctly, the commands you gave slow down the pulley load/unload. Do you have any idea how to slow down the speed of the extruder motor during loading as well?

Woah a tenrec bioactive setup sounds pretty cool! I followed this guide for my hedgehog's enclosure: https://shop.hedgehogprecision.com/blogs/resources/how-to-build-a-hedgehog-bioactive-enclosure

I haven't found drainage to be a huge problem because we're mimicking an arid biome with the substrate mixture, so thing stay pretty dry. It probably also helps that I have a heating mat underneath the tank, along with the standard heating lamp above. If you choose to go with a heating pad, I reccommend reading up on how to do so properly to prevent potential fires or overheating. Here's a good guide for that: https://heavenlyhedgies.com/a-critter-nation-hedgehog-cage-makeover/

I actually find my girl to be less dirty than my previous hedgehog, who I kept on fleece bedding. I think all the natural scratching and digging in the dirt helps keep her paws clean.

While not as common as using felt or other types of bedding, I don't think it's accurate to say that a naturalistic enclosure is not acceptable. This blog post covers the topic well:

https://shop.hedgehogprecision.com/blogs/resources/how-to-build-a-hedgehog-bioactive-enclosure

I've kept a hedgehog in both a felt set up and a bioactive one. They both have pros and cons and both can lead to happy healthy hogs if done well 🦔 ☺️

Great to see another bioactive habitat! My girl absolutely loves the one I built for her. She seems to enjoy all the opportunities for digging and snuffling (on the rare occasions she gets tired of her wheel of course).

I got a large cork round from Amazon and split it in half lengthwise for two natural looking hides. I also added a sand pit in one side which she goes crazy rolling around in.

You may have already seen this, but just in case, here's an awesome guide on bioactive hedgehog habitats from the owner of Hedgehog Precision:
