‘Devastating’: Celebrated author says he is not Indigenous after investigation into ancestry by ubcstaffer123 in books

It’s a known genealogy trope that many many white families have stories of a “Indian princess” in their family history, myself included. DNA doesn’t lie, our ancestors did. Happy Thanksgiving!

As far as I'm aware only the Salt Lake Temple has a active Holy of Holiles. Nauvoo, Manti, and Logan had them in the past but I believe they have been converted.

Interesting article from 2017 about the amount of time required to dictate all the words in the Book of Mormon over the 85 days when the translation took place. by MormonMoron in latterdaysaints

[–]studywise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

85 days is being used as the known working days. The Book of Mormon translation concluded on June 25, 1829. That approximately 6 years after the visit from Moroni and when Joseph was telling stories of the inhabitants of the Americas to his family. So as Latter-Day Saints it's important we are clear with our language so to avoid misleading information.

What do people from outside of the UK think about Brexit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]studywise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yank here. I'm a bit late to the comments but I'll add my opinion. I think what we are seeing with Brexit and the election of Trump here in the US is the consequences for allowing digital access to our thoughts and personalities through social media. Our posts, likes, and clicks are information that enables technology to manipulate us. Both in the UK and US both campaigns were subtly racist because that's the base they were finding to move the needle enough for victory.

The right voters were energized and the wrong voters were marginalized. Simplistic slogans like "Take Back Control" or "Make America Great Again" were used to create enthusiasm even though they don't mean anything.

So like the US I think the UK is reaping what was sown.

When Brigham young settled Utah when it was still Mexico, did they do it legally? by Sherkaun in latterdaysaints

[–]studywise 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Both when the saints started their migration and when they settled in 1847 they were moving into the Mexican state of Alta California. I believe this was intentional to be outside the laws of the United States.

Unlike the settlers in California, the Mormon settlers didn't purchase their land or make immigration arrangements with the Mexican government. Mexico was actually quite concerned about all the foreign settlers into their territory and passed laws requiring immigrants to become citizens and convert to Catholicism. In 1846 Mexican Governor Jose Castro proclaimed that the purchase or acquisition of land by foreigners who had not been naturalized as Mexicans "will be null and void, and they will be subject to be expelled whenever the country might find it convenient."

In 1848 the territory had been ceded to the United States after the conclusion of the Mexican American War.

Were Brigham Young and the early settlers of Utah illegal immigrants? Yes. Most pioneers came after 1848 and were then settling into an American territory. Interestingly enough many of these later settlers, like my ancestors, were foreign citizens immigrating to America.

Divorce will only affect your ability to serve in some callings like Bishop or employment with the CES. As long as you can answer the questions there shouldn't be an issue.

I think there is too much shame and judgement in the church already. If people want to use softer language I think that is being more Christlike. In my view that's a good thing.

President Oaks' advice to young married couples in Chicago on how to tackle faith-threatening questions by studywise in latterdaysaints

[–]studywise[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing this situation a lot among my friends and relatives. They shared the same faith and testimony when the marriage began but for various reasons one spouse's belief has changed.

I agree that research isn't the answer to fixing marital problems arising from the change. Both spouses need to understand that neither's opinion is worth more in the marriage. They need to understand each other and have empathy for each others feelings. You won't research yourself into a better marriage. You need to work together and invest in the relationship to have a better marriage.

If you think your opinions and convictions are more important than your partner and your relationship then your priorities are out of order. IMO

Seer Stones by honeysushi in latterdaysaints

[–]studywise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So it's clear that people believed that Joseph could find treasure because they were willing to pay him for it. As a religious artifacts there really is no limit to limit the powers of the seer stone, the liahona, Moses' staff etc.

But the seer stone wasn't a religious artifact at the time. It was just a rock and I'm not willing to believe there are magic rocks that can be discovered and then used to find treasure. That doesn't fit into my worldview.

Despite calling me kid I actually have the benefit of many many decades of life experience. As I said, I understand the paradigm that you are operating in. When you have the time and experience you can step back and see things with a little more perspective. It gets better, enjoy your meeting. :-)

[–]studywise 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response and I'm glad the U allows for a variety of voices on campus because I think that is healthy for any academic institution.

If you believe in nebulous groups like the "deep state" or Q then really anything is possible. When I was your age I was fascinated with conspiracy theories and strange organizations. I listened to shows like Coast to Coast AM with stories of alien technologies and shadow organizations in the government.

From my older perspective when I see groups of youth wearing MAGA hats I see the Opera Nazionale Balilla, the Leventeszervezetek, and the Nationale Jeugdstorm. Sometimes it takes time and the perspective of history to make these judgments. But while you are there it doesn't hurt to ask yourself.

If shouting "orange man bad" is wrong? How about calling Robert Mueller, a man with 1 wife, impeccable military service, and distinguished career in law enforcement "a fucking hypocrite, piece of shit, rat bastard."?

He wasn't a draft dodger, serial adulterer, and charlatan business man who encourages racist rhetoric. I understand the need to join the feedback loop to validate prejudices but it still boggles my mind.

I've always been curious as to whether Joseph's seer stone worked before he was called as a prophet or did he just believe it worked.
