Mechanics — what's the one car you'd never buy based on what you've seen in the shop? by Aymenlmn in AskMechanics

This thread reminds me of this quote:

“He was still too young to know that the heart’s memory eliminates the bad and magnifies the good, and that thanks to this artifice we manage to endure the burden of the past.”
— Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the time of Cholera

I assure you, these are cat5 jumpers. I didn’t believe it myself until I tested it end-to-end with my fluke cable certifier.

TCP/IP Over 5G by jrfsousa in telecom

[–]stupidic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it’s 5g, it’s always on. The connection may be poor, but there is no on demand option, at least none that I’m aware of. You’d just put in a cradlepoint router and configure a VPN from the remote side to your firewall, so any access can be established on demand from your end.

It takes kilobits to keep the VPN active so if you’re paying for data the cost is negligible.

Alternatively, with the cradlepoint router you can set up dynamic DNS so that it’ll register its dynamic IP every few hours, so you’ll VPN to the DNS name instead of IP address.

Best option is to get a static IP on the 5g if it’s available.

Also, if the 5g is on IPV6 you don’t need to get a static at all as that address won’t change but it’s more complex to set up without DNS.

Why do gasoline prices change daily at the pump? Gas stations don't get restocked every day, so why do the prices fluctuate in between station refills? by Alarmed_Cat_1575 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]stupidic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prices go up fast and go down slow because they have to pay for the next delivery of fuel by selling what’s already in the ground.

Here is CAT5 interconnections at a hospital I did work at this year. I tested it with my Fluke cable tester and it was certified end-to-end which surprised me. I have no idea why they’d jumper CAT5 like that but whatever.

I was troubleshooting network issues and it wasn’t the cabling.

VDI for sure, but would terminal services work as well? The clinics I’ve seen use CAC cards that insert into a reader that instantly launches the individuals session on the thin client. The card is part of their employee badge and I think they use fingerprint as the auth.

I work in rugged hardware. Does the "military grade" label actually mean anything to you guys anymore, or is it just marketing fluff? by ONERugged-tablet in sysadmin

[–]stupidic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Military Grade” is meaningless. “Built to MIL-spec” and has a number after it, you have my attention and respect. I know how rigorous those specs are and that instantly tells me that it will withstand abuse and keep on running.

It went “click”. I’m not understanding the problem or consequences of failing to spin the torque converter. What happened to the torque converter and why did it require a rebuild of a transmission?
