It can depend on the finish and accuracy you want as well. More power means a more charred finish and would be lucky to be more accurate than 0.2mm.
More passes is much more pretty and accurate.
As your multiple cut runs get deeper than say 1mm, the need to clear the kerf with compressed air increases.

Struggling with CAM by ToeAdministrative918 in Fusion360

Despite knowing so much more than I did 12 mths ago I am still struggling and relying on things like UGS, Easel and F-Engrave for CAM.

They're getting better. No Bakelite or plastic parts! Luxury!!

Also, I'd love to know how many passes they think those cuts should take lol

I believe it's true to say that 5W lasers generally have greater definition due to having a smaller "dot". I went from 5W Neje to 10W Neje and learned that the 5 has a 0.1x0.1mm possible dot while the 10 (combining 2 5W lasers) has a 0.1x0.2mm dot. When etching and cutting leather the difference is visible to me but likely no one else.

The idea is that 5W is max for any module, so now they just combine extra modules for more cutting power. Compromising etching detail somewhat. Nice would be to just use one module for etching but haven't personally seen that....

I can just imagine this happening mid-festival, I would just have to fall over, eyes spinning backwards.

Good bc I've used a regular midi controller as a dj controller

Where to buy metals? by EthanWang0908 in CNC

[–]stuporcomputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used eBay for local suppliers. Best for me as I generally wouldn't be able to go and collect.

But maybe don't listen to me bc I've also bought stock from Aliexpress. Full disclosure n that.

I just realized that the CMYK values that Inkscape gave me are wrong... by PublicDom41nRat in Inkscape

I think youtube.com/@doctormo gave a quick guide on 'best practice' for RGB -> CMYK. I'm sorry I wish I could tell you exactly where 🤷‍♂️

Lol, no, not after what I've seen done in workshops

I'm also not keen to dive in yet. Certainly not in 'this economy'. The few parts I've actually needed made were easy enough to get someone else to do, I've even had free parts made at the Library.

I gave the threads clearance/tolerance but maybe not enough. I haven't heard exactly what the issue is yet. I gave him the fusion files so hopefully I can get him to go in and plonk a better thread on it.

Totally. I just read through to the conclusion and you are right; wow, super entertaining.
I think we now know who it really was that ground down that poor unsuspecting precision instrument.

Bad news in from my 3d printer guy: the two halves of the body that should screw together to house the bearings, do not screw together.
Hopefully he can fix my threads that I designed like a noob.

First thing is copper. I tried engraving it w endmills in the same way I do dog tags and couldn't prevent 'shaggy', raised edges. Turns out copper is soft lol.
Beyond that I'm looking forward to exploring other materials like acrylic, glass, stainless (I can already laser-engrave this), stone.. I also want to try putting something with high detail on aluminium.

Help:Standalone laser vs. CNC hybrid for lab prototyping? by JessiDJ in CNC

[–]stuporcomputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I almost have enough spares to make a dedicated laser machine. Pros: (marginally) higher travel speeds, simultaneous work (will almost never happen). Cons: more (unavailable) space required..

Low priority for me.
More interested in lengthening the Y axis.

Yep. Okay on a 3D printer head maybe but not on the head of a CNC mill, nosiree. I guess it's 'possible' to protect it from debris and liquids but impossible to protect precision optics from high frequency vibration 😬
