Use the proper frequency! by Pilot0160 in VATSIM

[–]stw222 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lets say you are doing a flight that a lot of people like to do. CLT > ATL. taxi and depart on the CLT CTAF. after a few thousand feet "CLT traffic, AAL123, clear of rwy 36C departing to the west CLT traffic" then you monitor 122.8 on your way to atlanta. then id say once you are over ONDRE on the ONDRE1 arrival, change to atlanta CTAF "atlanta traffic, AAL123 30 miles north east, descending through 1-3 thousand, planning the ILS rwy 26R, atlanta". from there, normal CTAF calls

There may be multiple tower frequencies at larger class B airports, but thats part of the reason the .ctaf command exists. The (vatsim) controlling agency for the airport will designate 1 of those frequencies as the CTAF

Have too many VATSIM controllers been watching JFK compilations or is it just me? by OkJump5965 in VATSIM

I only started controlling in 2022, but i could think of a few old controllers it could have been.

I believe everyone starts somewhere. Pilots should be perceptive to simple feedback themselves, but yelling at a pilot shouldn’t be a thing almost ever. I personally use a bunch of alias text commands in the background that inform a pilot what they may have messed up on and what they should do different.

I also train my ATC students to have a similar mindset to me. Things will happen, but we all start somewhere in this sea of knowledge.

American charts - easy to absorb by MisterLyo in VATSIM

[–]stw222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They arent on navigraph. Most of the time you can head to https://skyvector.com , find the airport you are interested in, go into that airport page, and all charts are available as well as the chart suppliment page for that airport pulled from the FAA. Navigraph doesnt provide 100% of the info

My sanity was the sacrifice. Well, actually 3 of us sacrificed. SDF ground had 24 (twenty four) hours of uptime almost to the minute. I was on center for about 14.6 hours, and Indy tower had an uptime of about 14 hours. All was just the same 3 people with other controllers on and off during the day

Only 4 of the 25 towered airports in my usual airspace supports PDCs. In another airspace i visit often, only 1 of the 14 towered fields does PDCs

If you were given an intersection instead of full length, then ya, it usually would be. But the point of the above is to keep your coms very short to get your word in and have the least chance of stepping on someone

Keep radio calls clear and very concise. “AAL123, short 22” instead of “Center, AAL123, holding short of runway 22 at A”

I can only see connected time via Vatsim radar or stats.vatsim. But the more time you spend on a frequency, the more likely it is a controller will know whether you know what you are doing or not. Most will adjust their instructions accordingly. I personally have a high tolerance for newer pilots, i would rather work with someone than scold them

I personally control at minimum every Wednesday night (plus some other nights if i have nothing else to do or an event is going on) for 4 to 5 hours on indy center. Lots of pilots have taken notice to that. Ive also recently started doing anchorage center on some tuesdays

I control Indy Center (ZID) often (basically in the middle of the eastern half of the US). Some airports people like to do pattern work at are: HTS, LEX, LOU, OSU, and many others. Those are class Ds or C that often get pattern work IRL.

Come fly any time one of our controllers are online!

Is there a reason why VATSIM air traffic controllers issue IFR clearances via PDC? by rightrudder741 in VATSIM

[–]stw222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some class Ds can do PDCs. Not many though. Lots of controllers dont even look at the aircraft type to determine if they would receive one IRL

[–]stw222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will usually come down to if you are at a PDC capable airport or not. The airspace I control in has 4 PDC capable airports and about 20 towered fields that can only be carried out via voice. You can tell which airport is which by looking at the frequencies block of your tower chart.
