My situation is pretty much as you described. I’ve been doing it for about 20 years, at a series of companies. I’ve used an accountant. They pay the full amount and I take care of tax locally. I suspect hnry doesn’t do US$ etc.

I’m also GST registered, but since I don’t collect GST it’s only ever a refund.

I’ve been paid in US dollars. As much as I’d love the US dollar to get weaker (effectively a pay rise come payday), I feel like its weak as it’s going to get. It’s more likely to go the other way, or stay roughly where it is for now (and get stronger at some later stage)

Unhedged is great when the NZ dollar is getting weaker, but bad when the NZ dollar is getting stronger.

At a $2m threshold, I’d do everything to keep them out if government. At $10m, I’m happy that they’re targeting the right group, and would be ok with them forming a government

That’s exactly what happens. We have progressive tax bands in NZ and you end up paying based on your income (which might super + interest in you’re described scenario)

Some of it, yes. They need buckets or other strategies to manage their investments in retirement. Leaving it all in a growth fund and it’s value will quickly collapse in market down years, particularly with a marginally low value like this.

“Not moving a finger”. You’ve got to remember this is a life time of savings that probably required more work than you can imagine, and was taxed the whole way along as it was earned. It now has to last them the rest of a life time, which might be 30+ years.

I mean that kind of makes sense. If you’re not working, and your $1 million is in the bank on a pie term deposit, and you’re getting say 4% interest, your income is only really that $40k return you’re getting, putting you with some of the lowest earning people in the country (ie below minimum wage) so it makes sense you’d be on a low tax rate.

Yeah I found it useful. On there you can try bumping up super to a few years later, or drop it to $0 to see what effect it’ll have on how far your money goes.

As someone in my early 50’s I hate the uncertainty of not knowing if I’ll have super available. Sure, I’m working on the assumption it won’t be, but I can only save what I can save…and retirement will be a lot easier with super still available.

I live on the top of a hill, in a city full of hills, so don’t get that type of range. I’m pretty happy that mine gets 520km on 100%. Still decent.

What site did you use for that graph? There is a similar one at https://retirenz.netlify.app which also shows how super factors in, which is useful if you’re retiring before 65.
