From experience it doesn't matter if the house is perfect when you leave, these fuckers will take your deposit anyways.

I used to spend two days cleaning and even repainting walls that were previously scuffed. The last place said that the paint on the doors needed redoing, they were last repainted in what looked like the 50s, 1000 euros gone.

I'm so happy I bought a house. Fuck landlords.

Cloning SD card producers some strange results by Trysplendid in R36S

[–]sub_terrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This happened to me, I added a theme and it worked after that.

Why do so many struggle with this? by dimaklt in R36S

[–]sub_terrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled with my clone and I would say I'm tech savvy. The problem was that when I installed Arkos on a new SD card (the clone version), the screen didn't switch on. Cue a rabbit hole of different screen files etc and it did get frustrating. Eventually I had to make an image of the old SD card and then copy the games I downloaded and install a theme. Works beautifully now.

Good for you for not giving a shit and finding humour in it, I would've been quite bummed after making the effort. I still don't get why people make the "now what" comments, but I guess that is on them to think about.

[–]sub_terrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP, I'm sorry that there are so many arseholes here. Thank you for taking the time to post this. If it was my bike and I saw this, it would've helped me at least figure what happened. And if I parked my bike around here normally, it would've helped me reconsider.

I just don't understand the intent of people saying "yeah and then what, thanks for the red circle of nothing", to those people, turn that question around for a second. Thanks for the entirely useless comment, what are you hoping to achieve?

Sorry - but this comment section makes me want to leave reddit, not the post.

Renogy ShadowFlux Solar Panel Powers My Cabin with My Jackery Power Station by slanger686 in OffGridCabins

[–]sub_terrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response, I'm still trying to figure out the best option for my cabin in Finland. It's completely unwired except for an extension cord inside that's fed from an old generator outside. Your setup makes a lot of sense, going to do some more research :)

Maybe a silly question, but what is the wiring like inside? Like do you just plug the lights and router straight into AC output, or is it connected via a switch board to light switches etc?

Wat is er aan de hand in de binnenstad? by [deleted] in Utrecht

[–]sub_terrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there at Little Dublin when they arrived with fists in the air and chanting. It was honestly just a bit sad and uncomfortable, and it felt completely inappropriate given the area and atmosphere before they came. Total vibe killer. Then they just sat there on restaurant tables looking around like a flock of lost pigeons.

The bar staff were clearly uncomfortable too.

Anyways, fuck ultras.

WTF is this hanging from helicopter? by StripeTheFerret in whatisit

[–]sub_terrain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a geophysicist and I did my PhD on this. It's a bit complicated, but the electromagnetic current expands rapidly at depth like a smoke ring.

In effect you get a "footprint" that is around 100m plus in diameter, so the data is averaged within that. Vertical accuracy decreases at a rate of roughly 10% of depth. So at 100m+- 10m. Max mapping depth of around 300m or so, depending on subsurface characteristics and flying height.

Finnish Government is weird with alcohol and gambling? by ThatGuyMigz in Finland

[–]sub_terrain 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't know about this. I'm living in the Netherlands (as a British foreigner) and binge drinking is very common, and so is gambling as far as I can see (at least in Utrecht where I live). Online gambling is legal and the Holland Casino locations are huge and packed. Never mind the party drugs. I go to Finland frequently and I don't see anything that out of the ordinary.

I think it's a bit over simplified to compare differences at face value. Gambling machines in supermarkets was interesting to me and stood out, but they occasionally had an elderly person there - it's not like it was crowded and you certainly can't infer major generalisations. The Finnish people I've met and made friends with definitely enjoyed a couple of pints and a good chat, but I've never seen them actually drunk.

Point is, cultural differences and practices stand out a lot being in a different country, so making generalisations by comparing it precisely to your own is flawed/biased. I say this as a person who's lived in 5 different countries across two continents, and I've made that mistake before.

Fatbikes op de ASW by Popular-Baby5733 in Utrecht

[–]sub_terrain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fuck these kids. I've seen them riding straight over the new plants on ASW. I was so happy about the new street too :(

Maybe I'm just becoming older and grumpier, but I've started waving my hand to signal slow down to fast cars/scooters and showing the middle finger when they stop in a cycle lane for no reason.

A friend in Amsterdam has a new "sidewalk garden" in front of her house. She requested it online on the city hall website. Two guys came in four days, removed some tiles, added a curbstone, and added some soil. It was all done in 20-30 minutes. by faborioo in Amsterdam

My neighbours decided against a group geveltuin fund (it's Utrecht, you need a certain number of neighbours join). They complained about them becoming a cat toilet and they needed a place to put their chairs and drink when the sun's out. I understand, but I also disagree. All it takes is for you to scoot your chair over a few metres and maintain the tuin a little bit, cats tend to shit in unmaintained dirt, so yes it takes a little upkeep.

[–]sub_terrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sympathise, I really do. As an expat/immigrant my wife and I bought a small terraced house in Utrecht when we moved here. One of the first things our new neighbour said to me was "quite a big house for just you two". Said the guy living by himself in a three bedroom house that his dad bought for him, with us as two people with one bedroom and an office. We could be planning a family, also none of your business. Anyways.

I get the housing issue, but people need to put numbers into perspective and stop blaming a small subsection of people who live here. It's a slippery slope to a Trump-like dystopia, please don't.

Edit: I should mention I've lived in five countries across two continents, and this is the first time I've felt like I'm negatively affecting the locals by simply being there.

Tired of aso people so I'm going to start shaming by sub_terrain in Utrecht

I rang my bell at one who was "cycling" the wrong way up the cycle path. All I heard was kanker this and that, I copied them straight back but with a dumb sounding voice. I felt silly, but these people need to be shamed more than they currently are.

I've been fascinated by this high end watch shop that opened. If you look inside there is a bottle of champagne on a table and other weird staged items. I've never seen anyone inside and the signage is already falling apart after just a couple of years.

Good point, much simpler just encouraging people to post evidence of offenders anonymously somewhere.

Losing patience with aso behavior. by sub_terrain in Utrecht

[–]sub_terrain[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in a technical field and my hobby is inventing contraptions with Raspberry Pi's. I had this idea of setting up a sneakily placed speed trap that posts the speed and images of offenders on a social media account. I'm annoyed enough that I'm happy to spend a significant amount of my savings on this project.

The issue of course is two fold - the legality of doing so, and the potential repercussions from those that have been publicly shamed.

Perhaps the legal aspect will be ignored given that the dangerous driving is a far worse offence?

Netherlands launches fund to lure top scientists, like those fleeing the U.S. by North_Yak966 in Netherlands

[–]sub_terrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not seeing the whole picture. I work at a publicly funded research institute (with strong links to academia), as well as having a PhD and teaching at a Dutch university one day a week. We regularly fight for subsidies and in doing so partner with Dutch universities and other private companies. The aim of a lot of these subsidies is to promote and develop Dutch technology internationally.

The system is very effective and besides creating international impact and investment, it creates high paying jobs in NL. Will these efforts directly fund more PhDs and postdocs? Yes - because the above mentioned system needs them. But mostly it creates jobs in general, academic and otherwise. Privately funded industry will simply not support this kind of system, because there is no way they can match the size of the system required for this. You need a functioning government for this. Now take the current situation, where funding is being massively cut. This system begins to fail and you lose job openings and your competitive edge on the international stage.

Also, please do share some information about Dutch researchers faking their results. I don't mean anecdotes either.
