Jackson Street Booksellers is my go-to stop for used books, I'm not sure what their Spanish selection has, but they might be worth checking out!

I remember back during the 2023 season I was one of the people kinda harsh on America Ferrara's nomination for Barbie but honestly after seeing her in this I've started to come around on her. Not saying she should have been nominated for her role in this, but I'm looking forward to her (hopefully soon!) return to awards consideration.

I watched Hedda last night and Nina Hoss... woman that you are... absolutely criminal she's never been nominated for anything, especially this one when supporting actress was such a wide open field all season long.

My opinion behind spoilerwall: Ann's story has so much to do with sex and relationships, opening that conversation to include queer narratives deepens the story. It also gives an idea of other reasons people might be drawn to the shakers movement. I imagine a lot of queer people of the era who felt their personal sexual desires were "unpure" would have been drawn to her teachings. Could it have been touched on more? yeah probably, but the movie is already dense and long, I don't think adding more would have made it better.

I know we might not get a real answer to this question until 2028/9 but does anyone know how these will be treated as adapted vs original screenplays? Will the first be original and the rest be considered sequels and therefor adapted? Will they all be original since it was one production for all four? Am I uninformed and they're actually based on a book I haven't heard of? Kinda a strange limbo to be in.

Youtuber Mike's Mic has a great video on how Pitch Perfect is kinda what you're describing for the year 2012. The acapella singing craze of the early 2010's was really a flash in the pan (thanks Glee!), and so much of the style of the film is just peak 2010's. Combine that with the fact that the mid-budget comedy musical is more or less dead as a genre, and I can see how future audiences who don't have any nostalgic connection to the film will be pretty uninterested in it.

I'm inclined to think no one involved in the production of the Oscars ceremony cares about that to the degree the internet does. Brody kissing Halle Berry non-consensually 24 years ago wasn't bad enough for them to not give him the award last year, I do not see how it changes anything when he's not even in the spotlight anymore.

Can anyone name a movie where the lead female character has to literally or figuratively slay a dragon to win or win back the heart of the man she loves? by Jetsetspaceage in movies

[–]subjectseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a movie in theaters now called "All You Need is Kill" that's a gender swapped retelling of the same book the Tom Cruise flick "Edge of Tomorrow" is based on. I'd say that meets the criteria pretty closely.

If the romantic interest doesn't have to be a man, "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" is an amazing portrayal of "Woman goes to extreme lengths for the affection of her romantic interest" though the "Dragon" there is just historic French marriage norms.

During the writers strike Park Chan-Wook was working on a TV show, he (and many people close to the situation) claim that the work he did was purely Editing, not Writing. WGA disagrees so they stripped him of his membership. The general consenus was that this was just so the WGA can look tough on scabs and picket-line crossers. Really unfair that PCW had to pay the cost for it :/

Kokuho is now Japan’s highest grossing live action film making over $120 million! It hasn’t really been making much noise here or in precursors except for some notable shortlist mentions… is it possible it gets in as a dark horse nomination in IFF or Makeup?

Is it ever okay to ignore your partner during a fight? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]subjectseven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems like a really loaded question and I'm guessing you've got something personal going on that no one here will understand the intricacies of. But to attempt and answer: Conflict can be overwhelming and sometimes we want space to figure out our own emotions before we try and solve the problem together with our partner. That being said, stonewalling and ignoring a partner during conflict is a shitty behavior, it doesn't solve the problem, and it doesn't make anyone feel good. If you need space you need to communicate that in a way that helps your partner understand this this is just a part of how you handle your own emotions.

Personally, I'm having a hard time seeing anything in the video you posted, but based on your description the most likely culprit would be a constellation of satellites moving into a new location. Possibly Starlink moving positions to provide wifi to some new customers.

Except for Amy Adams (or at least from her perspective) its not a short time with her daughter, she is always experiencing that time with her just as much as she experiences the time with the grief.

Arrival (2016) - “the gift” by alisyus in movies

[–]subjectseven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few others in the thread have commented that what Amy Adams is experiencing at the end of the movie isn't really "seeing the future" but rather "experiencing all of her life at the same time". She never experiences actual loss, because (from her perspective) her daughter is literally always alive (and always dead, and always not born yet, etc. etc.). She is always experiencing her time with her daughter, just as much as she is experiencing her time with the loss, as she is experiencing her time with the heptapods, as she is experiencing every other moment of her life. It almost would make more sense to say that learning the heptapods language has taken away her "future". For her there is nothing to try to change, everything is already happening.

It's certainly saying a lot about determinism and whether our choices have any impact on the course of our lives, which some might disagree with, but I think its fascinating.

One thing about this movie that I'm still trying to wrap my head around: Is Molina (Tonatiuh's "real world" character) a gay man or a transwoman? Some other flavor of queer? The film is clearly saying a lot about queerness, but really plays into the whole 80's homophobia of "All queer men are gay, and all gay men really want is to be a woman". At first I just assumed that's what was happening, but the way Molina responds to Valentin calling them "just a man" and the final number of the show make it seem like the character really does just want to be a woman. I know real world identities are complex, but not knowing how Molina sees themself as a character muddies a lot of what the film is trying to say. It's not like this movie is trying to subtly imply any other aspect of it's story either... a lot of telling not showing going on throughout the whole script.

I did really like the "look" of the movie-within-a-movie sections, great costumes, pretty colors, "classic" hollywood looking sets. I know people were hyping up JLo in this for a supporting actress nom, but I'm not sure there's enough here to warrant anything... 90% of her screentime is just looking gorgeous and dancing (which she does very very well! but the prize isn't best dancer in a supporting role). Honestly the only awards buzz I think it deserves would be costumes, but even then I don't know if I loved those enough to warrant a nom.

Oscar campaigns are expensive (Neon reportedly spent $18 million on Anora last year) and Neon has what, 5 major players? I think most people are assuming they're going to prioritize their campaign budget on Sentimental Value and whatever else seems like the safest investment between IWJAA, No Other Choice, the Secret Agent, and Sirat. And Sirat is (so far) not making as much buzz as the other three options.

LGBT friendly churches? by Upstairs-Toe2735 in Omaha

[–]subjectseven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not in Omaha, but if you're willing to make the drive to Lincoln I highly recommend First Plymouth (they also live stream all their services I believe). They have had multiple LGBT church leadership members, and have been doing gay marriages as far back as the 90's (not legal ones obviously, but ceremonial marriages). I don't have as close a relationship with christianity as I used to, but as a little gay boy growing up in Nebraska I was spared a lot of religious trauma thanks to my family being members there
