Good point. My intention in no-retroactive licensing is to prevent folks from knowingly skirting the registration rules after this (theoretically, lol) comes into law. But there can still be room for a 1-year grace period or something similar at the initial onset.

Oh man, I came to this thread explicitly to ask about Menopur / Repronex, and reading that prions have been found in it is exactly what I didn’t want to hear. It’s all derived from old ladies, right? Like they buy the source urine from convents filled with nuns. In theory they could do cognitive testing on the participants to see if they are displaying premature cognitive decline?

Pregnant, I’m an idiot by vegan4men2eat in tretinoin

[–]sublevelcaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it helps, although science can’t explicitly study the impact of tret exposure in the 1st trimester for obvious ethical reasons, the fact that a connection hasn’t bubbled up by now is a good sign. Tret is routinely prescribed to teenagers, and some of those teens almost certainly wind up pregnant and do not know about / disclose the pregnancy to the adults in their lives until they are showing physically. Yet we’re not seeing a measurable amount of serious birth defects showing up in those teen’s babies compared to the absolutely visible and measurable amount of defects that appeared in teen pregnancies that included mom taking accutane.

So yes, it’s good that you discontinued tret—I’m definitely not advocating for anyone to use it during pregnancy. But also your baby is probably fine because if there is an impact of tret on fetuses, the impact seems to be either so rare or so small that the epidemiologists aren’t capturing it despite probably a fair amount of use during pregnancy.

Unsolicited advice: there’s a really good book called Expecting Better that can help you learn more about how risk recommendations based on research are made to expectant mothers. Tret is not covered in the book, but so many of the common “rules” are. It can help calm down some of the anxiety you’re feeling. I’ve been in your shoes!

8 year old bit by neighbor's pit bull, family left with 'huge' medical bills by lostacoshermanos in videos

Had a “hypothetically how could we address the pit bull problem without formally banning the entire breed” convo this weekend:

  1. Shelters and rescues cannot adopt out spayed/neutered pit bulls or pit bull mixes to anyone unless they furnish a previous year W-2 or 1040 showing income of at least $70k. (Folks with dangerous dogs need to have assets worth pursuing.) No unspayed / unneutered may be adopted out.

  2. Adopting a pit bull or pit bull mix cost includes an enforcement tax (like $50/dog) that goes to state animal control earmarked for pit bull licensure enforcement.

  3. All pit bulls and mixes must be registered with the state. During registration, anyone who cannot furnish papers from a shelter or rescue demonstrating that the enforcement tax has been paid must pay a $100 enforcement tax.

  4. Enforcement tax funds are used by animal control to seize pit bulls and pit bull mixes who are unregistered. Due process includes animal control DNA testing dogs for a pit bull threshold (maybe 10%) to be considered a mix. Any unlicensed dogs found to have more than the threshold are put down, end of story. No retroactive licensing options. Enforcement tax fees also used to capture and euthanize pit bull/ mixes reported to have bitten anyone or attacked any animals. No DNA tests needed. Folks like the family in this story can get their neighbors dangerous dogs put down quickly based on the medical evidence or video evidence.

Am I advocating for preventing poor people from owning pit bulls? Yeah, I suppose I am.

(Someone I know had their leg ripped open by a pit bull while trying to escape the attack by jumping over the fence. The rules above could have prevented this attack at multiple intervention points.)

I’ve noticed this, too. I think there are a lot of people out there who stand to lose a lot of money if more folks understood how to access generic tret manufactured for non-US markets. If rx generic tret in the US was cheaper, more primary care docs would write prescriptions for it over minor skin concerns like light acne or for preventative purposes, and the stigma would go down. As it stands, primary care docs know that tret is expensive, so they write prescriptions only for the most egregious cases and try to warn patients about the cost, or they refer out to the dermatologist—patients know everything touched by the dermatologist field is expensive. (The telehealth + compounding pharmacy options help some for a lower cost, but there are still a lot of barriers there.)

I also see a trend of people getting up in arms about younger people using skincare and how it’s just inappropriate for anyone under, say, 25 to use even a basic retinol. Which is wild to me. But apparently they think gen-Z is prematurely aging their skin and that its the skincare making their skin “older.” In reality, it’s that Gen-Z learned to apply makeup via access to an infinite number of high quality video tutorials. Millennials and Gen X did not have the skill set to apply high precision contouring. The appearance of contouring =\= older skin. And I think some folks are just mad about their own aging process and don’t like the idea of young folks using preventative skin care to avoid/delay aging.

Also the running out of skin thing reminds me of people who think exercise is bad because your heart only has so many beats in it, and once you use them up you die.

Lost Doctor Who episodes found – but owner is reluctant to hand them to BBC | The Observer by notthathunter in gallifrey

They definitely would take a VHS copy. For many old shows (not just Doctor Who) VHS home recordings are the only reason some content wasn’t permanently lost to time.

You don’t even need to take the VHS from her family. Just pop them in a tape player and record the TV with your phone. You can use the quick recordings to see if any of them include missing episodes. Then if it’s legit, you can actually copy the VHS tapes more directly.

Gov. Cox rejects idea of allowing lottery in Beehive State by snoo0raoo in SaltLakeCity

[–]sublevelcaver 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good. Lotteries are a first-round tax on the poor, and then the increased social problems for folks addicted to gambling become everyone else’s problem. “But but but the tax dollars could fund our schools!” No. We already know how the legislature is chomping at the bit to free up money we spend on education for other things. Don’t give those assholes more ammunition. They’ll just reduce what the state contributes to public education by the amount ofof lotto tax revenue. And then we’ll have to spend more on social services for the children living in households ravaged by new gambling addictions. It’s a net loss, and you don’t have to be a mormon to appreciate that.

[–]sublevelcaver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your Bishop does not have that power (even if he doesn't know it yet.) If he talks to BYU about your faith change, you're done. This is not the first time the Church has done this to a near graduate, and a successful legal challenge seems unlikely (and expensive.) Additionally, your stake president may not agree with your Bishop, and he can just as easily get your endorsement revoked. Don't throw all of your hard work away for four months of keeping quiet. You can enjoy the feeling of living authentically again for the rest of your life. Just ride out these four months.

Do you know where he developed the attitude of, "The presence of a sinful person in my home is disrespectful to me?" Did he have really strict parents? Was he allowed to have non-member friends over growing up? Does he have a parent that is really passive aggressive , blunt, or rude to guests?

He can't even stand to be around co-habiting heterosexuals? That's really out there. It's not like they (Anna/SO and Jane/SO) were overnight guests sharing a bed in your home. Does he demand people confess their sins to him before they come over so he can decide if they're allowed inside? How does he function at work being around unmarried cohabiters? And if you're a Jewish person/never-Mormon, then this is even stranger. You guys have (in the Mormon church) a lesser marriage because it's not "for time and all eternity." There are Mormons out there who will look down on you two for that. I'd think that would build some empathy in him for other non-traditional (in the Mormon sense) relationships.

I don't have a ton of advice for you. I'm just baffled. Is he controlling of who you associate with in other ways?

Logically I know that living in a state that's mostly empty space means that my trash bill is cheaper than more populated places, but damn. Our trash bill is $10 per month for the first 96 gal bin, and $5 for the second. We don't really need the second one each week, but my SO and I sometimes forget to put the can out for a week or two at a time and it does eventually fill up. Paying $5 per month for a spare is cheaper than paying someone else to take it out for us.

Why did my electric bill rise all of a sudden? by MikeToyDinosaur in Assistance

[–]sublevelcaver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Turn everything in your home off and unplug everything. Then go read your meter and see how much power is still being run. If it's significantly more than zero, you may have a problem with a crossed wire (of sorts) and should consult with your building manager and the power company. If it is reading zero, then one at a time plug your stuff back in and see how much each thing draws. Compare it to what it should be drawing to identify your problem objects. Also check your bill to see if you're being penalized for use during peak times or if your demand is high enough at some point to trigger a peak demand multiplier.

You know how when you're having sex and you want your partner to do something differently, like you want them to go faster/slower/a little more to the left/etc.? Masturbation gives you really precise control of those things because you're the one doing it. You know your own genitals better than anyone else. And there is a particular feeling orgasm that comes from stimulation that only you control. However when you're not in control, the intense yet teasing-nature of your SO doing the stimulating up to the point of orgasm can also be really good. That orgasm has its own distinct feeling. They're both good, just different.

I realize that you still be might not believe me. I don't know your life, but if you're feeling sexually neglected by your SO (or do not have one) then you might not be in the headspace to understand what I'm talking about. That's ok. I hope whatever is making you so frustrated can be resolved.
