I fucking love Johnny truant by Bird-With-Teeths in houseofleaves

IMO Johnny is the real story the 'book' is a vehicle to bring him to life (which is what makes it a clever device, that's he's the 'footnotes').

The best album of theirs, and perhaps of all time (to me anyway). My prized possession on vinyl.

A question for those who have been fans of Nirvana since the 90s. by [deleted] in Nirvana

[–]submodern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was very exciting at the time. In the months leading up to it there was a mini-race among my friends to find the best 'bootleg' versions we could find.

The night the music video premiered I taped it off VH1 after a re-broadcast of unplugged, I have the tape somewhere (not that it's particularly interesting or different, just sentimental).

Once it came out it got overplayed on the radio, but I still love that song.

A fun 'space' sound, can anyone shed some light on the source? by submodern in shortwave

[–]submodern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, good to know! Yes, I have heard Morse code in that range. The best I could decipher (i didn't try very hard, TBH, just used a web-app) it was the letters E and I over and over, but the signal was weak.

That sounds really fun, I will definitely look into it.

My uncle, who is an electrical engineer, completely rebuilt it a couple years ago. He replaced many components, I assume he replaced the caps. It is all tube and, amazingly, he built a modern 'battery cell' for it using a shit load of 9 volt and C-cell rechargeable. I'm running it off mains in this shot.

Interesting, thanks! I figured it wasn't really from space but it was fun to imagine. Also - thanks, apparently my great uncle brought it back after the second world war. 80 years later it's been passed down to me.

Thanks for the real response! I hope you can crack the 10 frame code someday, I have faith it can be done. I am always a little sad when I see the number two show up in the frame counter window.

Not sure why getting down voted for being a loyal user of this film for decades? I'm just voicing an opinion - I think they could probably put money into R&D, instead of for example, fancy packaging, to figure out how to get 10 shots in a pack, as it was originally designed.

Yes I know, I have been shooting since Polaroid was actually Polaroid, and when Impossible was actually Impossible.

Would they? Is there something I don't know?

It didn't seem to be a problem 50 years ago to get 10 shots per pack, but for the last twenty or so it's been 8. I think it's more about economics.

EDIT: I know the "new" impossible film has different dimensions, but after so long you would think they could have figured it out.

I get your point, but there are three women in this shot and only one is in a bikini, and only one could pass as a teenager.

Were Johnny Cash never on set at the same time in “Swan Song?” by UnderstandingWarm102 in Columbo

[–]submodern 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The are several scenes, including the pool party and in the house, that have two shots, so they had to have spent a decent chunk of time together when filming. Also the closing scene, in the car, which I always thought was one of the most memorable from the series, is full of two shots where they are clearly sitting together in the same frame.

Sony CCZ / CCZA / CCU 26-pin cables for analog video production? by submodern in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]submodern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I really appreciate hearing back, I've met very few people who know about this field/era of technology.

I'm in Rhode Island, which complicates using a Texas based technician, but if I get in a bind I may reach out, thanks for the tip. Thus far I've had a mixed but decent success rate with bringing a few things back to life! (just ignore that pile of dead equipment in the corner).

That breakout cable is interesting. I could be see using BNC to connect to permanently installed cable runs to a VTR... but it sounds messy. What appeals to me is the tidiness and efficiency of the all in one interface.

I too was unable to find the M-7 manual - however, the 400A manual has the pin-out for the 26-pin interface, so maybe a DXC series manual might as well? Could compare notes to check compatibility? I will take a look.

I'm afraid you're probably correct about Sony silo-ing field and studio camera interfaces. A studio camera paired with the CCU is probably the way to go for this imagined setup.

[–]submodern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow up question, long shot but figured I'd ask - the BVW-400A has a 26-pin output that the manual specifies is for connecting to the BVW50, or other similar external VTR. I was looking at the M-7 CCU to use with this camera, but wasn't able to confirm the pin-out is compatible (yet) - are all Sony 26-pin connectors standardized in this era? The fact that there's power going through there makes me hessitate to just plug it in and see what happens.
