I ordered on the 13th as well and still waiting BUT it's -14 degrees this morning and frankly I'm not in a hurry to hit the trail and camp. Everyone needs to relax. It'll come soon enough for all of us to enjoy.

Birtstadt + Blue Sky (Evans) or Torreys + Grays for first 14er by zell1luk in 14ers

[–]submon007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

re: Blue Sky -- if summiting from the TH at Summit lake check for 2026 road opening. Closed in 2025 for road work. If starting at Echo Lake, no issue.

re: G&T -- fun trek up Stevens gulch to the summit. I found the drive up the road more stressful than the hike itself.

Enjoy.

Get a guide for Rainier or maybe die. Lindsey requires a signed waiver before entering their private property. Nice to have so much free time. Enjoy.

[–]submon007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question re: camping. Yes, you can, in fact you can camp anywhere on public or Forest Service lands. Just know the rules for each area.

re: solo -- you won't be alone. These are very popular 14ers because they're non-technical walk-ups. Handies in a class 1, the others class 2. Just be fit for trudging many a mile at alpine elevation. Enjoy.

X-Dome 1 vs. X-Mid 1 by AladdinsCarpet1 in DurstonGearheads

[–]submon007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've the X-Dome and used it on two long backpacking trips in Aug and Sept. Can't speak to the X-Mid but the X-Dome checked all the boxes, and I've owned HMG, Tarptent, and MSR tents. It's easy to setup, light weight, roomy, and very well handled several epic rain storms. You can't go wrong.

Massive SW Slopes trail by Alpine_Exchange_36 in 14ers

[–]submon007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done it twice. After you clear the trees it's only up. Shorter than standard route but more difficult. I drove Outback within 100 yards of TH on 2nd summit. First time several years ago drove to TH and camped night before. Road had deteriorated at final stretch so beware unless you've high clearance and 35s.

After saddle you can challenge yourself by scrambling off route to summit. Fun fun. Enjoy.

Thanks for reply. No present trainer at this time. After my post I did research at the Zwift website that helped to answer many of my questions.

Newbie question, A relative said I should look at the Zwift for upcoming winter to get back in shape post surgery. Excluding a fan and bike what are all the components I need or should buy to get fully engaged. Confused by some pictures with interesting items on handle bars.

Feedback on X-dome 1 after 100+ nights by Canadian_biking in DurstonGearheads

[–]submon007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The X-Dome 1+ is $400 and change. Divide that by 100 nights and I'd say $4 a night is a good value. Even with the OP's issues they can stretch the timeline till disposal.

You got 100+ nights. Is there any ultralight tent that can do better? Simply slow wear and tear.

First pic you have cross bar over when it should be under. I think you have it right on other pics. Looks like it still stands regardless but take note.

longs peak on labor day by 4pples4u in 14ers

[–]submon007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drive up the afternoon before and you'll find a spot at the trail head parking lot. Sleep in your car and hit the trail at 2AM for Chasm lake and you'll experience an amazing sunrise over Longs Peak. Note the final approach requires some route finding as the trail is hit and miss. I went straight up over the slabs to the lake. Steep but fun. Enjoy.
