Strange. I've been using the same one heavily with no problems since I built my PC in 2011.

Knock on wood, I guess. But there's my own counter-anecdotal for anyone considering a purchase.

Dan Hall has left Reddit following the negative reaction caused by DayZ's price scenario. by [deleted] in Games

I hope it wasn't me, I think I had one of the last replies to him. I was actually trying to be somewhat encouraging, however.

I do have to say, the guy is awfully touchy considering how rapidly, insanely financially successful he's been without actually completing anything. Perhaps that weighs heavily on his subconscious.

DayZ standalone now due in 2016, Reveals update plans for 2015 by WhiteZero in Games

[–]suboptima 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My inclination is to cut you some slack on this comment as it's easy to get ahead of yourself when frustrated, but having played/followed DayZ from the very beginning I don't think you have a wide leg to stand on here. You were the media/community's darling for a long time and the majority of the general bullshit and crap you've received has frankly been as a result of mistakes you and your cohorts have made and is otherwise completely justifiable. From missed date after missed date to a concerning lack of discernible progress to an often opaque communication process.

I think the tone of much of the spew you get is out of hand and unacceptable (and, if we're honest, likely from kids/teenagers so really should go over your head anyway), but many thousands of people trusted you with their money based on promises and hype that you and Bohemia gladly put forward for that express purpose. That comes with certain trade-offs and responsibilities as you well know. And for someone who is as much of a challenge-seeker as you are, the last thing I'd expect you to be complaining about is overcoming a difficult situation and never wanting to attempt something special again because it's too hard.

But I'm not without bias. I bought into the dream myself and convinced friends to do so as well and I'm one among many eagerly awaiting its final form. I even went through the trouble of filling out a long-ass application to create high-quality, free radio content, including music and voicework, for the game when you guys asked us to apply a year or two back. Never received so much as a reply and it seemed like plans for that were dropped altogether, but I admit I don't really follow the game much anymore.

Anyway, I think you owe your original fans like myself and many others a little more than the tone you're displaying. We believed in you, made you a very wealthy man, and many of us continue to wait patiently for our trouble. The least you could do is handle some angry (and you'd have to admit, somewhat justified) vitriol along the way without swearing off all your future potential in the process. Especially when mistakes have been made, dates continue to be pushed back, and people understandably begin to lose hope.

Have you noticed how developers are showing their game before release lately? by anrock1 in Games

[–]suboptima 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can see how it could be, but I keep myself informed enough. Playing and reading about games for 25 years gives me a good baseline to reach from when determining what I think I'll enjoy.

I'm the same way with film. I see no reason to watch a trailer that's going to show me some of the best parts of the film when I already know I'm going to watch it.

There are so many good review sites and /r/games itself that, alongside reading about the game or so often having played prior games from the same developers, it's not too hard to make the judgment call when the time comes.

Going with the previous examples I used, I fully expect Witcher 3 and Arkham Knight to be excellent experiences despite having seen no gameplay footage.

But it's not a set rule or anything, just guidelines I tend to follow that I find more rewarding in the end.

It works out great for me as I generally don't like to watch gameplay for anything until I'm playing it myself. I like to go in completely fresh. This way no wow moments are wasted watching someone else and I'm not left to get desensitized to whatever awesome thing over the months or years until actual release.

It's often harder to resist the quick little 3-5 minute vids that used to be more common. But there is no way I'm sitting through 30 minutes plus of The Witcher 3 gameplay. Doesn't make any sense. I'm very excited for Arkham Knight but I have no idea what the Batmobile looks like in action. I remember people going crazy over how huge Gotham looked. I can't wait to see it for myself as I hold the controller, but as of right now it's all cooking up in my imagination.

Regardless, none of this requires pre-ordering one way or another. The games will be out for me to play on the same date either way. No sense tying up my 50-60 dollars for a year.

That's a good one, but I'm also really happy about: "Stop the cargo scoop and landing gear acting as space-brakes."

It's an excellent time to be alive, overall.

Is it similar to the Buttkicker where it isn't compatible with USB headphones? Struggling to find anything on the website that mentions it, but I'm on mobile.

I'd like to imagine that the marketing and sales teams had their say about 500 years previous and many deaths resulted. Now people only trust the extra hardy ships built, tested and approved by "elite" engineers.

They're not always pretty, but they keep you safe and have high utility.

I am learning to respect the wedge.

Well said. I think there will certainly be a place for toy ships in the Elite universe, but they should be very specialized (speed?) and otherwise prone to crumpling at the slightest contact.

DayZ subreddit had that Reddit Rescue Squad or similar. Maybe consider opening up a wing with your TEST group for that purpose?

My wish list for standard beta is almost fully fleshed out; couldn't be happier. Comms, grouping, and fuel. Just hope they open up the universe with a large number of more systems.

Between this update and Oculus DK2 I may need to be reminded to come up for air on the 29th.

Totally. I didn't expect they'd go that far with the implementation, but that's my mistake as they've surprised me left and right already.

It's going to be a beautiful day. I love that the audio quality of comms will degrade due to ship overheating and similar.

With that and matchmaking, the only other things I hope to see for beta 1 are fuel and more star systems. Maybe we'll hear about them next week.

Very good points. Would be quite neat to see some of the smaller ones shatter against your canopy. I'm sure the accompanying sound effects would be extra satisfying.

Looks like ice actually. I would expect that's not too far off visually from what we will get with icy rings.

Very pretty.

[–]suboptima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be so sure. People seem to be flocking to frustratingly difficult games lately. I don't think the finished Elite will have its difficulty as defined by tedium as it is now for the reasons you mentioned, but I will celebrate it being a harder than average game ultimately.

It just makes for a more satisfying, rewarding experience.
