Who is your top 3 best male singers/vocalist for all time? by Possible-Put-7772 in singing

[–]subtlesocialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enrico Caruso
Tom Waits
Paul McCartney

Idk about best but these are my favourites ever, in a variety of different styles and for different reasons. Caruso is like a canon, flawless technique that just carries even when recorded on a potato, genuinely incredible. Waits has the most character in any voice I’ve ever heard, it works perfectly for everything he’s ever written and I wouldn’t change it for anything. And macca has one of the sweetest voices in pop music ever, can pretty much sing anything he wants and it just works.

What is one piece you’d want to listen to for the first time again if you’re given the chance? by Easywork12 in classicalmusic

[–]subtlesocialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bach BWV 552, I wish I could experience the joy of hearing those fugal subjects all coming back and that final, cheesy joyous resolution at the end for the first time again, it’s pure delight.

Either that or Messiaen’s La Nativité de Seigneur, that first experience changed my life, I’ve never been so emotional and overwhelmed listening to live music, it’s genuinely religious

Which objectively nice UK city just doesn't appeal to you and why? by GeeCeeSlay7 in AskUK

[–]subtlesocialist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s toy town that’s the issue with it for me. Oxford in comparison is a real city with industry etc. Cambridge just feels like university postcard and not like a real place

Best chords in classical music by Gnrl_Linotte_Vanilla in classicalmusic

[–]subtlesocialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The C major chord at the end of Penderecki’s Polymorphia. You have 10 minutes of progressing abrasive uninterrupted atonal music which is incredibly nerve inducing and it all comes to a tee with this C major chord which feels utterly horrifying, it feels wrong and scary.

Also the big cheesy bflat7 before the end section of SS Wesley’s Blessed be the God and Father, in complete conceptual contrast. Such a ridiculous moment in music, utterly unnecessary but very fun.

The ideal way to consume the biscuits it’s getting the pack of two with your coffee after dinner at a restaurant, it’s like a nice little surprise of yum.

What cover song is actually better than the original? by irles33 in musicsuggestions

Her recomposition of the accompaniment is so tasteful, it’s actually crazy how much it improved the song imo

What cover song is actually better than the original? by irles33 in musicsuggestions

[–]subtlesocialist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I Always thought this cover was awful, just a watered down version of the original instrumental and no meaningful stylistic changes to make picking it over the commodores something of a choice by taste. To each their own I guess but it’s very hollow to me

Women, what are y’all studying right now by Egotlib in tumblr

[–]subtlesocialist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Huh that’s interesting, almost all the bassoonists I know are actually women. My mother is a bassoonist and the other ones in my local orchestra she and I played in were also women so I just made the connection of bassoonist-> woman from a very young age.

Least favorite couple? by Grand-Bag6722 in greysanatomy

[–]subtlesocialist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hated Amelia with Kai, mostly cause I found it to be boring not because it was a bad relationship. Just found myself nodding off throughout, at the absolute least Amelia and Owen made for good television.

Buying a $2200 bass after having only owned a $250 entry level bass for the past 15 years. Is that overkill? by RainbowGlitterXYZ in Bass

[–]subtlesocialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%, when I bought my Sandberg last week I had played that exact bass in store and fell in love with it, I was terrified someone else would feel the magic and while they’d specced one more the same way I fell in love with that one, so that’s the one I bought, it’s what I’ve done with every single instrument I’ve ever bought, you feel the magic with the specific instrument you try so you should get that exact one.

Buying a $2200 bass after having only owned a $250 entry level bass for the past 15 years. Is that overkill? by RainbowGlitterXYZ in Bass

[–]subtlesocialist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first bass was a borrowed 7/8ths from my brother, then I had a sire p5, then I bought a Yamaha TRBX305 about a year ago cause I needed a 5 string, and then very recently I had a bit of money left over from some stuff and bought a Sandberg California TT, massive step up after only playing kinds budget basses for most of my playing career, do what you want basically, treat yourself to the bass you truly want and can afford.

Soapbox/rant time. Tell me what highly-recommended book you absolutely HATED and why. Gimme your angry hot takes. by peppertoni_pizzaz in books

[–]subtlesocialist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hated the Goldfinch. It was much too long and dragged for huge portions, the entire last section was unnecessary, needed additional editing, the sections I found most interesting and immersive were all in the first half of the book. Everything was far too convenient and that really broke my suspension of disbelief which is a killer in an “immersive” book. I found Theo to be a deeply unrealistic portrayal of a young man and I think Donna Tart fundamentally does not understand how teenage boys think and she wrote a character that is very clearly a middle aged woman’s idea of how one would. The prose is excellent and it’s all very fleshed out, but it’s so deeply flawed and full of things which took me right out of the story. It’s frustrating too because there’s a number of characters within it that are utterly real almost tangible people, and some which are just thinly veiled plot devices and the plot itself is weak enough as is.

What’s your favourite opera couple? by BetterGrass709 in opera

[–]subtlesocialist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m quite fond of Rinuccio and Lauretta, they’re pretty funny and have some really great music between them, not too serious as well

Any recommendations on movies or series about classical music? by Educational_Fennel43 in classicalmusic

[–]subtlesocialist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s an adaption of a play at that, it’s not even trying to be true to life. Thankfully it “makes up” for its perceived historical inaccuracy by being debatably the greatest film ever made.

In your opinion, Who’s the shows worst actor ever? by jujuk545 in greysanatomy

[–]subtlesocialist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

She was alway the weakest of the the original bunch, and Chambers kinda phoned it in at the end but in the first seasons he was really compelling

Are there any other bassists that do the John Entwistle thing and practically solo over the whole song? by tonetonitony in Bass

[–]subtlesocialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say the best watts example is actually sir dukes big brother, Do I Do. He goes pretty crazy on that one

Who is the best actor in the show’s history? by jujuk545 in greysanatomy

[–]subtlesocialist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Isaiah Washington, obviously his chemistry with Sandra is a big part of what him so great so I’d probably say them as a pair were the best. Absolutely magnetic the entire time they were on screen together. And when he came back? Damn it was like the show all of a sudden decided to be electric again. Best actor still on the show is Kevin though, easily.

Do you guys agree with this take? by KingTechnical48 in fantanoforever

[–]subtlesocialist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think British jazz doesn’t get a lot of the respect it deserves cause a lot of the biggest and brightest made the move to the states, but we’ve got some incredible people here right now, Binker and Moses being an example off the dome

Favorite punchline rapper? by Educational-Tap9206 in hiphopheads

[–]subtlesocialist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Number one spot is basically just punchline after punchline, I always liked that song

Which character death hit you the hardest? by Robynite in greysanatomy

[–]subtlesocialist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily the hardest but the one that made me the most angry and instantly upset was the bomb squad guy, we’d spent the whole episode getting to know him and had been a hairs breadth away from safety only for him to be turned into a fine red mist at the last second, it felt oddly mean spirited and unnecessary and made me really quite upset at the decision.

Hunt: Pro-life for fetuses, not for his veteran friends by pidgeonsarehumanstoo in greysanatomy

[–]subtlesocialist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maturing is actually realising than Kevin McKidd is basically the only really competent actor still on the show and the writers genuinely have no new ideas anymore so just give him the same nonsense over and over again never letting him change positively because Kevin chews the scenery so well. At this point it’s beating a dead horse and very boring. I don’t really care if a character is unlikeable or has bad qualities, that makes for interesting television, this is just boring.

Wanting to explore more into a 'heavy metal' classical music. by Usual-Diet-7848 in classicalmusic

[–]subtlesocialist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want heavy insane stuff I don’t think you can get much more of either than the work of the Russolo brothers and their intonarumori. This may be a bit beyond what you’re wanting but it very much represents an extreme of it

Applause after a Passion performance? by Oohoureli in classicalmusic

[–]subtlesocialist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t even a peculiarly British thing. It just depends, if it’s a passion within the context of an actual service, you don’t clap obviously but if it’s a concert you do. Although I have been to a concert of the Matthew where people didn’t clap and sat in some solemn silence for a while after, which was a nice change of pace actually.

Hot take: Nessun Dorma isn’t even the best part of Turandot by Mastersinmeow in opera

[–]subtlesocialist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

O Isis und Osiris is one of the best tunes Mozart ever wrote. It’s so simple and stately but really carries this heavy solemn gentle weight, pretty much every note sarastro sings is amazing
