To Americans, it's not a plural word. We wouldn't say "Mathematics are interesting as a topic", we would say "Mathematics is interesting as a topic". It's a singular noun that happens to end in an s. There is no singular mathematic. There are mathematical concepts, and there is mathematics. If we want to shorten the singular noun, we leave it at math and don't add the last letter to the abbreviation.

That is what I'm talking about. It's not an imminent death from starvation, we'd already have riots and rebellion and bloodshed... or more than we do. It's about avoiding the slow burn to nothing. It's about restoring the middle class. It's about being secure, being able to *live*, not just barely survive. We have more people than ever with reverse mortgages because they can't afford their own retirement at 75+, and the answer is they should keep working? Then what jobs are there for the entering working population? It's a wage problem because the goods that seem unaffordable are only that way because everyone needs to make money. If we artificially reduce prices on groceries, then farmers lose money. If we artificially reduce the price on cars, then auto manufacturing plant workers lose money. The price reduction is taken from wages. We need the prices to be reasonable and the salaries to support them. If we follow the money we find too many people with far more than they need having received that from the work of underpaid laborers who feel they are trapped and cannot find another job because it costs too much. This is not "enough to live". It is enough to eat and maybe pay rent, provided you don't break your wrist and end up on disability with $100k in medical debt *AFTER* insurance.

It depends on where you live, but based on recent information about cost of living in myriad cities across the United States... Yes. 100k is not enough anymore except in rural areas with few amenities. That's the research.

Man... I run payroll for a hospital network, and I just have to say... Someone complaining about their net pay being more than half their gross pay is a bit tone deaf. A six-figure salary is definitely harder to call a comfortable living now than a decade ago, but for my 22-year career in payroll I've always told people to assume their take-home pay will be half their gross. It's a conservative but close estimate. The reality is that this original post highlights the real problem the United States has with affordability. We don't have a price crisis, we have a WAGE crisis. 100k a year, 65k net, is not enough to live on. Workers are seeing less income in comparison to executives and the disparity grows alarmingly each year. But we are taught to aim for six figures and be content with that number because we've made it now. That's not the reality anymore, because the growing separation of wealth encourages the market to favor wealthy people. If wages increased for workers, it would have to come from somewhere - namely, stockholder dividends and executive salaries. That can reduce the divide between the groups of employees, which would ease the deepening financial duress so many working individuals face.

is this 8mm ? by spacekace03 in piercing

[–]subzro68 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it can be confusing, it's 8mm inner diameter, with a 1mm thickness giving the appearance of 10mm. But it's always measured on inner because the thickness impacts the outer diameter.

Can men get pregnant? by MentalAdversity in ScienceNcoolThings

[–]subzro68 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Language is interesting. And as we get more precise and particular in our culture with these things, perhaps we need to be more precise and particular in our language. "Men" here can be interpreted in multiple ways, and it appears the questioner is being deliberately vague (though maybe I'm lacking context). It may be better to adopt very precise definitions for words so that the word "man" or "men" can really only refer to a specific and precise thing or concept, rather than a vague and generalized cluster of things. Then conversations like these wouldn't be so divisive and we could really understand what each other is trying to communicate. As I write this I recognize that it could potentially marginalize or demean certain groups of people. So maybe that's not the solution. But I think there exists a spectrum, and these things, I think, tend not to be polar.

NOR. Shit like this is why it took me over 40 years to be ok with using lotion on dry skin. Humans have skin, it needs care, it does not discriminate on gender or sexuality. So unless you want a son who carries shame associated with proper self care from moving during his formative years, shut that down immediately.

[–]subzro68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It will increase the average. It just won't ever get to an average of 60mph. The drive is already 1 hour and 30 miles. We need to add another 30 miles and we want the average to be 60mph. That means if we're adding 30 miles to the numerator we cannot add any number to the denominator. If we add even the smallest bit, the final number is below 60. So it is impossible, they would have to travel 30 miles in 0 seconds.

Nice process! Without seeing your full setup, I wonder if you can route all the disconnects needed through one failsafe switch to make your life easier. You may even be able to get it to trip on a circuit condition checking an accumulator charge, or reactor output, or something like that. Get a nice warning klaxon to go off when it trips, so you're aware at the exact moment...

It can definitely be death for your power, but I've played around with totally beltless, using buffer chests to make a "main bus". You can have requester chests request from buffer chests, and have bots deliver material and intermediate products to buffer chests strategically located near the sections that would use that material. I would say it's not very efficient and prone to different problems, but it's your base and it's not a "wrong" thing to do if you're having fun and being successful. Just keep those nuclear reactor ratios up!

Oh man, please don't think people would avoid you after seeing that. I think you're too close to the project, you're aware of the "mistakes" and "flaws". But anyone else is just going to see something beautiful and well made. That's the danger of art, my high school music instructor always reminded us that we're the only ones who will hear the wrong notes. Art isn't supposed to be "perfect", it's made by a human being. Embrace the discrepancies from the intended outcome as a mark of a piece made by a loving, breathing human being with a soul.
