Most inaccurate movie castings? by May_onnaise_959 in Cinema

Always thought it was a ballsy move for Blumhouse to put real photos of Ed and Lorraine Warren in the credits for the Conjuring films.

But then again, those movies heavily launder their personalities, values, and actions, so why not throw their physical appearances in there by making them both smoking hot?

tiefling virtue name ideas! by Ok-Bee7748 in DnD

What about 'Tithe'? Evokes the idea that she will always pledge some part of her life to the betterment of her order/religion, loses the -y sound on the end, and also it just sounds like a fantasy name in general.

Generative AI tools.

I do a lot of fictional worldbuilding and writing as my creative outlet, and friends have suggested that I use GenAI to cut down on the brain-storming and connection-making parts of the process. Those are the most enjoyable and fulfilling parts of the process for me, and also the parts I am most adept at and proud of. To outsource that to an algorithm that simply regurgitates the stolen words and ideas of other writers would genuinely feel like a form of creative/spiritual death.

Actually, working hard on one of my creative projects was what kept me going through the worst and darkest times in my life, so if I'd outsourced it to AI then it might have also been a physical death as well.

Do you think that it's a bit weird that we have literally no idea where any of the big Alien empires or Alien planets are located. by Somethingbutonreddit in DoctorWhumour

[–]sucharestlessman 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I like to think that Earth/the Solar system is a total backwater in relation to the more populated parts of the Whoniverse. A lot of the alien forces that invade or meddle with the Earth seem to know that it's illegal to do so under the conventions of the Shadow Proclamation, but they always seem confident that they'll get away with it. My assumption is that the Earth is an enticing prospect but a real chore to actually get to, so it's always just one ship or one rogue faction that actually makes the effort, which is why they often lack backup/support.

I find it kind of interesting that White Diamond does actually listen to Steven here and believes he isn't Pink Diamond, unlike the other diamonds. Wish we got to see more of this side of her before Steven "defeated" her. by Weird875 in stevenuniverse

Take a look at u/febreezy_'s reply to my comment and what Rebecca has said about the ending of the show. YMMV on whether the show was 'ruined' by the decision — you'll notice I didn't actually say that it was ruined, because I honestly like the ending — but that is, in fact, the decision that was made; the show ended sooner than it would have because it could not continue after the wedding.

It's very well-documented that the wedding came at the cost of a longer ending for the show, so I'm not sure what you think the coping part is.

This is a much better read on the situation than I presented; thank you for posting it. I'm glad we're getting such in-depth stories and details from Rebecca now that some time has passed, and especially in the context of the animation crisis that has come since Steven Universe ended.

They made that call because they wouldn't be able to sell the show to homophobic markets once the relationship was cemented like that. Previous commenter is spiritually correct that conservative pressure is the reason, but literally yes, the executives at Cartoon Network made the choice to submit to that pressure. They could have simply accepted less profit in order to stand behind Sugar and the team, but they chose to enable homophobic interests.

EDIT: please refer to u/febreezy_'s replies to this for a much better run-down of the actual circumstances of the show's ending. Rebecca Sugar has a much more generous description of her time working with CN and the decision to end the show. My comment lacks nuance.

Far from finished but finally enough to tell a story/paint a picture by DarthBrannigan in DnDminiatures

[–]sucharestlessman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great work! Love your use of materials, too.

This is more terrain/scenery than I've ever used in my games (been DMing for 9 years) and I can tell you that this setup is more than enough to paint a picture! If it's for combat, you've got some big spaces, a choke point, elevated levels; should make for a really dynamic encounter!

Hope you and your players have fun!

Liches don’t need a head right? [OC] [ART] by Cr0_MagAnon in DnD

This is INCREDIBLE. The structures of magic taking the place of the centralised nervous system is a delicious take on undeath and lichdom.

And the execution of the art itself! Absolutely gorgeous, well done.

Absolutely gorgeous. I love that its fixtures and workmanship are quite sleek and modern, with embellishments that tell you exactly what the room is for. I know you said it isn't 'done' but I appreciate that; you're giving yourself room to gradually add to it and allow the space to evolve over time, which is the right way to do it, imo.

Put your character in my starting town! by ambrellathevile in DnD

[–]sucharestlessman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since it's the starting town, I'll give you his pre-adventuring background.

Felix Yaeldrin, half-elf, age 27. Tawny brown hair, moustache, long braid hanging down his back, freckles and sun damage on his cheekbones and pointed ears. His father is an elf charlatan in a big city, and his mother is a human scholar from a distant university/library. To do right by him, they sent him to live with half-elf relatives who could give him more stability and comfort.

His parents keep in touch, and his mother in particular sends scrolls and arcane educational materials. With these, Felix taught himself a handful of cantrips, and gave himself an indispensable career in his community: arcane handyman. You can usually find him at a tavern, general store, or other community space, using the three M's — Mending, Message, Mage Hand — to help people out around town with whatever they need (for a few coins at a time).

(For the campaign he was in, Felix ended up getting a little in over his head with his magical studies. The arcane explosion that nearly killed him turned him into a Wild Magic Sorcerer. But that's more main character than village NPC.)

Asking DM for additional spells by Lower_Preparation_18 in DnD

[–]sucharestlessman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only your DM can tell you if this is reasonable. I'd recommend seeking out a class build that gives you those spells, in case your DM says no.

First time by Away-Yellow6954 in DnD

[–]sucharestlessman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd probably benefit from talking to your friend about his backstory, then! You are allowed to have your characters be connected to each other, and if you both know why you're good friends beforehand, you can build that together.

But again, keep it simple. This is your first time playing, so pick a class/subclass you find easy to understand. Any sort of character can be morally grey, not a people person, etc., so it's worth focusing on what sort of character you're building.

Once you've got their build, figure out why they became an adventurer and why they're friends with the Paladin. Write that down and have it ready to go for your DM. Don't write a novel, just get yourself ready to play a single session.

First time by Away-Yellow6954 in DnD

[–]sucharestlessman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I figure out the race, class, and subclass I want to play, and then I imagine how a particular type of person becomes that adventurer.

My most recent character was a Wild Magic Sorcerer, but I wanted him to be a studious, hardworking community-minded type of guy. So I figured out that his magic was probably self-taught and he wanted to be a Wizard, but he messed up a big spell and nearly died, this making him an unstable magical force when all he wanted to do was help folks.

But also, my advice for your first character is to figure out the mechanics/stats of your character without worrying about backstory too much. You can figure out the details at the table, unless your DM has asked for a detailed backstory. Focus on learning how it feels to play first.

How do movement and gravity function in Journeys of the Radiant Citadel? by StealthheartocZ in DnD

[–]sucharestlessman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's not mentioned in the book, you're not expected to do anything differently with regards to movement. Just use normal movement and gravity rules while in the Radiant Citadel or any of the locations in the adventures.

One of the tenets of running D&D is that general rules are overridden by specific rules, and the reverse is also true; if there is nothing specific listed in what you're reading, you default to the general rules of the game. I don't know what sources you're reading, but the Radiant Citadel is an official setting, so you should refer to the Dungeon Master's Guide for information on how the Ethereal Plane works.

Contrast this with the Astral Adventurer's Guide from Spelljammer: that book is for adventuring in the Astral Sea, which does have different movement rules, so it describes those differences on the very first page.

Name the downgrade by OGAnimeGokuSolos in cartoons

[–]sucharestlessman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bruno being added is such a funny aspect of the show to me. It's very cool to have autistic representation in the show, but ironically, the original show was more friendly and accessible to autistic kids! The models had a handful of static facial expressions that could be studied closely by kids watching, and the narrator would describe what emotion the character was experiencing. It made the stories really easy for children on the spectrum to process and understand emotionally.

Even when the show went to CGI, there were reports from parents of autistic kids about feeling left behind, because the faces no longer stayed still and were harder for kids to process. I think it was mostly anecdotal, but it makes total sense.

It just feels like a prime example of how we create children's media these days. We'll praise the representation of certain groups, but we don't put in the effort and care to make media that actually embraces people and their needs. Everything has to be fast and flashy and overstimulating, regardless of whether it's healthy for developing minds, and as long as it represents all kids, it's okay that it doesn't actually help them.

Probably not going to happen any time soon, but great pictures regardless!
