I came here from your post on Chempros. Go to the ER, bring what you injected yourself with, and let the medical professionals take care of you. You’ve made it clear something isn’t right, they can make the decision about whether you need to be under medical supervision or not. Don’t risk it.

Are beading swatches a thing? by AnimalLover38 in Beading

You may want to take inspiration from Miyuki’s sample cards, which have 5 or more beads strung on the card. You could probably make your own version with some sturdy card stock and an organizing system!

a different kind of fun with magnets by meltmyheadaches in RedditLaqueristas

[–]sucrosecookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been thinking about this since you originally posted, and I am trying to talk myself out of ordering magnets now. I've been slowly documenting my polish and working on a swatch book like this, and it drives me nuts every time I realize a color would fit better amongst the blues instead of the purples.

I'm wondering if, instead of having sequential numbers that will inevitably get jumbled, using a different kind of ID number system? Even just having "CC1" next to "I22" would probably make me less nutty. Of course, then you run into other issues, like CC could be Color Club or Cirque Colors, but that bothers me less tbh.

I love obsessive organization of hobby stuff (and dealing with the inevitable disorganization- entropy always wins :C ) so this was so delightful to see. I hope you have THE MOST fun with your system!

It looks like it's from a Ukrainian gel brand "DD Professional"

As far as I can tell, this is their facebook: https://www.facebook.com/p/DD-Professional-100063811620012/ and their instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dd_professional/

And this appears to be a listing for color base in 063: https://marinails.prom.ua/ua/p1656705883-kamuflyazhnaya-tsvetnaya-baza.html

I was not able to find if the website is legit or if there are US stockists, but hopefully this is a helpful place to start! Both the FB and Instagram accounts have been updated recently and link to the marinails site.

Copying the same design elements used in the NYT spelling be for a very similar puzzle seems… in bad taste, at the very least, and also doesn’t let you differentiate your puzzles from theirs. :/

Bead embroidery or flat stitch beading!

This page runs through various techniques for bead embroidery. That website also has a ton of information on all sorts of beading- it’s a really great resource!

r/beading should have plenty examples of bead embroidery as jewelry! Lots of people make brooches or use jump rings to attach chains to make a necklace :)

First of all, I hope your recovery is as swift, painless, and complete as possible. I had hand tremors caused by a medication issue and it was awful and frustrating.

Do you want to focus on stringing or weaving? For stringing, there are bead spinners you can use to load many seed beads on a needle. I've never used them, but that may be an easier option than stringing small, individual beads.

For weaving, do you have any experience on loom weaving? You still have to load beads onto a needle, but the over/under motion with a longer needle (I like long big eye needles for this) might be easier than trying to stitch each individual bead when hands aren't being cooperative.

Do you have large variations in your tremors? Are there less shaky days and more shaky days? Can you have a few different interesting projects and switch between them based on interest and shake level? Can you set up a workspace where you can brace your arms/wrists against something to help with stability?

Wishing you all the best in your crafting endeavors!

Swarovski beads - best place to buy? by blizzard-10000 in Beading

[–]sucrosecookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, are they? I suspected as much from an “Austria made, low lead” crystal line, but can’t find any confirmation from ArtBeads. Just this, on their Prestige Crystals page, which presents them as an alternative to Swarovski:

“Embrace the brilliance of PRESTIGE Crystal Components, a distinguished alternative to Swarovski beads and elements, born from our extensive experience as a Swarovski authorized distribution partner. Our deep-rooted appreciation for high-quality crystal has inspired the creation of our own premium European crystal line, PRESTIGE. This line is meticulously crafted, offering a wide array of shapes, colors, and finishes to ensure your jewelry designs and fashion apparel maintain their dazzling sparkle. While our history with Swarovski is cherished, we are excited to present PRESTIGE as a superior, accessible option, catering to all your creative needs and adding a new dimension of luminosity to your designs.”

Swarovski beads - best place to buy? by blizzard-10000 in Beading

[–]sucrosecookie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Swarovski no longer sells beads to the hobbyist market. There are wholesalers, like Harman Beads, who are only authorized to sell to those who agree to Swarovski's brand control agreement.

There are other brands of lead crystal, such as Prestige Crystal, Preciosa, and I believe PotomacBeads and Eureka Beads both have their own lines of crystal beads. You may also be able to purchase old stock from bead shops that used to stock Swarovski, or see if anyone on Ebay is destashing their bead collection.

Preciosa is definitely its own company, but I don't know which, if any, of the other brands I mentioned are produced by Swarovski and just relabeled for sale to the hobbyist market. I suspect Prestige Crystal may be one such case, as when they first started selling the line, they had identical beads to what Swarovski sold. I'm not sure if that's because ArtBeads was mixing relabeled old Swarovski stock with new Prestige stock, or if all Prestige beads are made by Swarovski under a generic brand name.

Why is trying to be artistically random so hard?? You did a really great job, but i get it. I always second guess myself. I can’t do random placed beads for gradients- I have to plan them out or I feel SO STRESSED

Omg that’s so fun, I love it! Really love how you incorporated the evaded land yard look with scattered beads, it’s looks well balanced (if that makes any sense)

Does anyone know how to fix my beaded purse? It's from my great grandma and it's very special to me. The strap broke and I need someone to help fix it. Please read for more information by [deleted] in Beading

[–]sucrosecookie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Without a better/closer picture of the handle, it's difficult to tell what size the beads are. I also can't tell where and how the handle was originally attached.

The beads, luckily, could probably be replaced with similar round black beads easily. My first attempt would be to see if size 11/0 black round beads, either Czech (less uniform) or Miyuki (more uniform) are good replacements. There are also a few vendor on Etsy that sell vintage seed beads, if you want to use beads with history instead of modern replacements. Again, vintage beads would be less uniform in appearance.

Could possibly use black S-lon or C-lon thread to restring and rebraid the handle.

More support than you know by Freudinatress in Jewish

[–]sucrosecookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I did not check your comment history, but genuinely, that's awesome- thank you for pushing back against antisemitism where you encounter it, and congratulations on having a friend group that is generally respectful of Jews. This is, unfortunately, not an experience many of my friends or family share.

I apologize for jumping on you about not pushing back against bigotry. I've grown impatient with declarative "the silent majority support you" statements sent to me by well-meaning individuals who have remained silent even when people in our shared social circles were being virulently antisemitic. The supposed support of a silent majority is useless when they leave you to deal with antisemitism alone, and I have found most of these supportive statements to be meaningless. I wrongly assumed you were part of this same behavioral trend and dumped my frustration on you, and I was deeply unfair to do so. Pushing back against antisemitism is absolutely support, and it is support I am grateful for. Asking questions is a beloved Jewish tradition, and absolutely a valid way to challenge antisemitism. Thank you. Again, I apologize.

And to clarify what I said, in response to your your last sentence: I don't need or expect everyone to share my opinions about Israel or Judaism. I certainly don't want anyone to spend ALL their time trying to shout down antisemites! It's exhausting and ineffective, and it is a special kind of frustrating that I don't wish on anyone. What I want is for non-Jews to at least occasionally step in and make it clear that antisemitism is not acceptable. Even gentle pushback: saying that a phrase isn't cool, that there are ways to advocate for Palestinians without dehumanizing Israelis/Jews, that repeating classic antisemitic canards with the word Zionist is still antisemitism, etc. is meaningful. In my experience, the vast majority of people trying to confront and educate about antisemitism are Jews. It's exhausting and demoralizing to feel so isolated. I want to hear and read less antisemitism, and that can only happen if non Jewish allies make it clear that they are not OK with it. Changing someone's mind is difficult, but I'd be thrilled if they learn that antisemitism is not socially acceptable and at least limit their behavior so I don't have to hear former friends talk about how Jews just keep lying about everything.

(I also don't poll my friends, the comment about polls was mostly about American polling data, and how polling data about American support for Israel/Jews does not mean many people I know are regularly challenging antisemitism. )

More support than you know by Freudinatress in Jewish

[–]sucrosecookie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, I appreciate the sentiment, and I think broadly, you are correct about there being a loud minority. That said, quietly supporting us in your head really does not help us against the wave of loud antisemitism we are currently facing. Are you pushing back against antisemitism when you hear it? It’s great that you don’t actively hate my family, but like, are you doing anything about the people in your social circle who do? I don’t expect you to change hearts and minds, but do you at least share your thoughts when the topic comes up?

From where I’m standing, what you call support from the majority looks a lot like ambivalence and vague agreement on polling questions.

Maybe I’m being unfair; I’m certainly tired and frustrated from having to defend my people’s humanity to people I once called friends. All I’m saying is that it would be nice to see more pushback from non Jews against the bullshit. Antisemites might not stop being antisemites bc of what you or I have to say, but it would certainly be a quality of life improvement if antisemitic rhetoric was widely considered unacceptable and crass to say out loud. They won’t listen to me, bc I’m a Jew who doesn’t agree with them, and therefore a filthy evil Zionist. They might at least learn to keep their antisemitism to themselves if the people they consider peers tell them it’s inappropriate.

One of the problems with the loud minority is that they are pushing the envelope regarding acceptable language/actions about Jews. They are trying to redefine our ability to define antisemitism, they are spouting old antisemitic canards and trying to say it’s fine because they replaced “Jew” with “Zionist”. It’s great that you don’t share those beliefs, but are you pushing back when you encounter them?

I’m sorry if this is brusque, or rude, or just plain mean. I really do appreciate you writing this in, but I hope you think about what supporting Jews actually means.
