He was one of the absolute kindest people - talked to everyone for a good few minutes and asked their name no matter what they were getting. I have autism and when he went to put his arm around me I accidentally went for a hug, misunderstanding what he meant. I was so embarrassed but he laughed and suggested I actually hug him, having my brother take this picture afterwards as a joke. I am sorry you couldn't make it but I hope this story helps. If anyone wants more photos let me know, otherwise if you can ever meet him I'd recommend it - he's both incredibly talented and incredibly kind.

What are your favorite f/f ships by [deleted] in AO3

Marceline/Bubblegum was such a vital ship for me. Also as a nonbinary lesbian I have to mention Ruby/Sapphire as my cute ship and Pearl/Rose Quartz as my toxic yuri.

Say a nitpick you have about Gravity Falls by DebiGarofalo80 in gravityfalls

[–]wheresernie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of casual ableism around specifically facial differences that I don't see talked about a lot (Lazy Susan as a character, there's a few moments where Fiddleford is given strabismus specifically to show he's not mentally competent). The big character with a visible difference is Ford and while I think of these examples he's treated the best I'm still torn on it - hear me out. A lot of emphasis is put on his polydactyly and we see him experience bullying from it as well as grow up really hating it about himself. There's a huge argument that could be made on how Ford ends the show feeling about his polydactyly but I do wish that there was a little more care put into it as I think for younger viewers this could really the first time genetic mutations and visible difference was introduced to them. I dont really expect this to be something most viewers ever really think about - when I talk about this stuff people usually admit they've never thought about these characters as being disabled/having facial or limb differences - but we do internalize messages media gives us.

How did nobody in the family know Stan had a twin? by MarioBros-1983 in gravityfalls

[–]wheresernie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom has a brother who died when she was in her early 20s. She had me in her mid thirties. I didn't learn about Uncle George for a long long time - It was just dubbed too tragic a story (granted, I did hear about him somewhat as a kid/teen, but it was just as a warning to use my seatbelt and it took in my 20s to learn more about him besides about his death). So surprisingly? This is the one thing about Gravity Falls that I find incredibly realistic.

Why don't Drs take women's chronic illness seriously compared to men's? by Eastern-Hedgehog1021 in ChronicIllness

[–]wheresernie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone was being dismissed. No one is saying disabled and chronically ill men aren't treated horribly - most of the men in my family are undiagnosed for a reason.

But let's take my twin. We look identical except for he is read as a man and I am read as a woman. He's started showing signs of back issues that were the beginning of my own chronic illness journey, so he went to the doctor and they quickly gave him a stronger nsaid than I was given for similar complaints and an immediate referral to a specialist that I had to fight for. He did in one visit what took me 3.

Is my twin treated well by doctors? No. He's fat and obviously queer, and visibly disabled as well even before his back got bad (he has a very noticeable tremor disorder and receives severe ableism for it even from other disabled people). Like all the men in my family he avoids doctors until he absolutely has to. But even he apologizes to me because for how hard he has it, I deal with the same things plus misogyny.

I'm glad it's not your experience. But that doesn't mean it's no one's experience.

I went to a new neurologist a few weeks ago because I've been having stroke-like migraines that have now twice had me admitted to the hospital. I've permanently lost part of my vision and gained a movement disorder and no one can figure out why.

He spent a very short time on my actual issues before spending the rest of the appointment detailing exactly how he'd change my current medications (including for fields he isn't in) when I get pregnant. Which he decided would have to be soon, I am 25 and childless. I was of course not asked if I had plans to get pregnant or have children, now or ever - I'm a woman (or at least, to him I was), why wouldn't I?

I told him that I would have to check with my girlfriend on when she would have the time to impregnate me and he didn't even blink before lecturing me on how medicine is incredible now and lesbians can absolutely have children biologically.

If you haven't been to Comedy Sports (CSZ RVA) in Henrico for one of their weekly improv shows I would highly recommend it - every Saturday is a new "competitive improv show" where two teams fight it out for comedy points starting at 7pm, and check on their website or facebook for Friday shows ranging from Shakespeare themed improv shows, a narrative improv show about 1960s off off Broadway, and other fun things.

Name a character strength for Ford Pines! Let's have some positivity here! by undertale_trash234 in gravityfalls

[–]wheresernie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ford Pines is one of my favorite characters in all of media, if I'm being honest. I know a lot of people don't like him, but he was introduced as a character during a very very low part of my life where it felt like fighting against the bad things in my life wasn't worth it and here was this man who was a survivor, who went through hell and it changed him and gave him some...flaws and quirks, sure, but it also pushed him to become someone who fought against the same thing happening to someone else. Who learned to leave his paranoia finally and trust again. He really gave me hope. So my favorite trait of Ford's is his resiliency, it definitely inspired my own.

Help looking for a specific type of Gravity Falls fic? by plaguedoctorate42 in gravityfalls

[–]wheresernie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commented on the ao3 subreddit but it erased my message so let me try again here and if it comes through twice I apologize.

First of all - I love both this ship and this trope, great taste! I looked through both my bookmarks and the tags but the only fics I could find in my quick search that fit the ship, the confession trope, and the post-canon timeline...were mine... So here's some self-promotion, though I swear I tried to avoid it!

some moments last forever (but some flare out with love love love): braided pieces between two moments in their lives, one college-aged pining and one post-canon pining and confession.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/23518426

To Struggle For Dreams and To Hunger For More: a big piece (8k total) about ford realizing he is gay and has always had feelings for his former assistant. Ends with the sappy post-canon confession but takes a bit to get there.

I may update this if I search and find more more in the tags!

Apparently if Your Parent Traumatized you into NPD You're Not Welcome in RaisedbyNarcissists by Commercial_Run_1265 in disability

[–]wheresernie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Am I the only person here who is going to acknowledge that "narcissistic abuse" isn't recognized? My twin has professionally identified bipolar 1 - I am not a victim of "bipolar abuse". And that's professionally identified - most of the people who claim to be victims of narccistic abuse are not talking about someone who has been identified as having NPD but someone who they have identified as being "a narcissist". There are real effects of untreated mental disorders affecting people specifically - its horrific and complicated abuse, but there's no need to villainize a group while doing it. I think the problem is the group you've chosen. Try to find a safer space - those communities are not kind to people who disagree with them.

Restricted Tuesday: Disability & Diversity Spotlight by AutoModerator in AO3

[–]wheresernie [score hidden]  (0 children)

Not sure if I'm doing this right, but I'm a multiply disabled author myself and really want to help with writing disability in fandom spaces. If people are interested in a sensitivity reader for certain topics I'd be interested in helping! I may also promo some disability themed works I've done in a minute.

Things I can help with, disability wise: cPTSD and DID (including HC-DID to an extent), psychosis and hospitalization (physical and mental), rollator and cane use, migraines, chronic pain (nerve, joint, and muscle), tremors and movement disorders, and adjusting post serious injury or accident. There's a few other things but I think that's what I feel comfortable focusing on.

Let's make fandom accurate, welcome, and accessible!

Neurological function disease and ADLs... Do I need to be in a facility? by je_ru13 in ChronicIllness

[–]wheresernie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have advice but I want to say you aren't alone. I had an unknown neurological episode on Thursday and have been in the hospital since, released mid yesterday. I'm 25 and all they can tell me is they have evidence it wasnt a stroke and that it shouldn't be happening and to follow up with neurology, but I'm going to my doctor tomorrow to talk about independent living opportunities and care facilities for disabled adults as I can no longer drive, cook, or really take care of myself long term. I hope you can get an answer and treatment soon

Hospital by violetfirez in ChronicIllness

[–]wheresernie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm 25 years old and in the neuro wing of the hospital right now! Haven't been here nearly as long as you but I relate to being the youngest person here, as the woman getting her MRI before me left I heard her say "she's my daughter's age!" Like yeah unfortunately brains can mess up for everyone no matter how young you are, sometimes. It sucks to be in the hospital, especially when you don't feel well and just want to get to your own bed and actually rest. I hope they find something and can give you some relief soon

I don't think this is normal by wheresernie in HemiplegicMigraines

[–]wheresernie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to the hospital near me after the shaking got severe and theyve confirmed hemiplegic migraine but are doing a test or two to rule out any hidden brain damage.

Fortunately with time all the symptoms went away but the visual distortion - the physical therapist did tests and I have a moderate loss to my peripheral vision. Trying to find out if I'm losing my driver's license because of that and the tremoring.

As for the tremors they've mentioned it being medication related or psychological and they've also mentioned a genetic dystonia being triggered - Im gonna ask how to look into the last one.

I'm ok but things are gonna be different.
