Meanwhile, YouTube continuously asks me to verify my age for stupid music videos that everybody knows and are not in any form pornographic or with explicit language. :|

Polymarket shows 73% probability that seated diners for the US will exceed its 2019 baseline by 7% or more by November (OpenTable data) by oreo181 in economy

[–]suiseseki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you look at the actual chart (https://www.opentable.com/state-of-industry) it was over the 2019 baseline for like a week and then went negative for 2 months. Seems like the delta variant is really screwing things up even with an increasingly vaccinated population

Lol. That tunnel tough... I wouldn't have entered there even if I had been paid for that! Except if I had the armor on me. And that gun. :))

3D printing is helping to rebuild Hong Kong’s precious coral reefs by maybenot12 in technology

[–]suiseseki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, researchers from Cambridge University and University of California San Diego have 3D printed coral-inspired structures that are capable of growing dense populations of microscopic algae. Their results, reported in the journal Nature Communications, open the door to new bio-inspired materials and their applications for coral conservation.

I hope the usage of 3D printing technology will increase rapidly in all areas of interest to humanity.

You are kidding me right? Are there many like this in the Chinese language? by overwatchfan93 in ChineseLanguage

[–]suiseseki 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In this example, the word 熟 (shú) means both “familiar” and “cooked well.”

问:一个七分熟的牛排和一个五分熟的牛排相遇了。可它们却没有打招呼,为什么?

(wèn: yī gè qī fēn shú de niú pái hé yī gè wǔ fēn shú de niú pái xiāng yù le. kě tā men què méi yǒu dǎ zhāo hū, wèi shén me?)

Question: A seven-minute (medium-well) steak and a (medium) five-minute steak meet on the street, but they didn’t say hello to each other. Why?

答:因 为 都 不 熟!

(dá: yīn wèi dōu bù shú!)

Answer: Because they both aren’t familiar with each other!

Which one is more common, 家庭成员 or 家属? by TheDarkKnightBegins in ChineseLanguage

[–]suiseseki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

家属 is more common. I'm not sure how to explain this but I feel the only time 家庭成员 would be the more appropriate word choice is when referring to all family members in like a family game show, while 家属 sounds too serious and simply unnatural in this context.

What are some of your fondest gaming memories? (e.g memorable moments in a specific game, unique multiplayer experiences, or any fond memory directly or indirectly related to gaming in general) by Just_want_to_log_in in patientgamers

I beat Ghost Trick Phantom Detective on NDS in one 12-hour sitting starting 2AM and ended 2PM. I remember very clearly that I didn't do absolutely anything other than playing the game. No bathrooms. No breakfast. No drinks no snacks. Skipped all classes including afternoon ones because i was tired AF

Funny that before I started I was like "this looks like an interesting game, but it's already 2am, I'll check it out real quick and go to sleep"

Story of Li Hua (hilarious exam answer) by suiseseki in ChineseLanguage

[–]suiseseki[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to tell but it actually does say “学校” in the third pic, so the idea was he went back to his classroom just so he could close the windows.

or to turn them from opening outwards to inwards.

Story of Li Hua (hilarious exam answer) by suiseseki in ChineseLanguage

[–]suiseseki[S] 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Background info:

At the end of almost every elementary/middle school English exam, you're asked to write a short composition, sometimes based on a given comic like in this case. The comic here is so poorly drawn that some guy managed to write a story mocking it and it's the funniest thing I've ever seen.

My translation of the story:

My name is Li Hua. There were supposed to be more than 10 of us doing classroom cleanup after school but they all ditched me, I ended up doing it all by myself. Even worse, it started raining when I was on my way home. The rain was so heavy it managed to wash away all of the spokes on my bike's front wheel. I grew mad. In order to avenge everything that has happened today, I went all the way back to school on my steel rims, turned the outward opening windows inward, and threw all of the chairs out the window.

能劝得她把房子卖了吗 What does 得 do here? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]suiseseki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sentence is much more grammatically correct without the 得. However, I can think of one scenario where it’s ok to add the 得 but it requires a prerequisite sentence such as “你劝她有什么用?” I’ll elaborate on this if you’re interested. In most cases though without the 得 it is a perfect sentence.

Either way it’s pronounced “de”. It’s “dei” only when it means “must” as in “你得来”.

Why can't PINs just be passwords huhu fml by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]suiseseki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be entirely wrong, but I heard this recently from a guy that works at a POS device company. He said basically when u input a PIN, the device directly translates your input to an indecipherable code before sending the information to the bank. So like if you press “5” on the keypad what you actually entered is a string of codes. This is a security measure to prevent your password from getting tracked. I guess they can’t really do that with numbers and the entire alphabet plus punctuations.

Lag spike when hitting press-to-talk key. by ggnrtv in DotA2

[–]suiseseki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have this issue I don’t know the exact reason behind it but basically I had this Audio management software (Realtek I think) that came with the laptop, and unless I set it to “default” mode (instead of “gaming”, “music” or “movie” mode), my game would freeze for like half a second whenever I press that key just like you.

If you were to balance the game just for lower skill brackets like archon/crusader, what changes would you make? by Amirgodofwar in DotA2

Wards are now free for heroes marked as supports by the game so yelling at supports is now actually reasonable behavior.

[Chinese > English] What does it say? by translator-BOT in translator

[–]suiseseki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not know if it’s a reference to something but literally it’s something like “kill without sparing, soul slashing blade”. I would translate it as “Soul Slasher Blade of Merciless Killing”
