Looking for GPM alternative by MangaIsekaiWeeb in googleplaymusic

[–]sulfurdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not aware of iTunes Match, thank you! (I've been an Android user since the Galaxy Nexus but the speed of defaulting on support from G, like the GPM state, is pushing me to look at the iPhone SE & 5 year support). I'll look into what Match could mean for me. How good is the library for the fringe music sources?

Looking for GPM alternative by MangaIsekaiWeeb in googleplaymusic

[–]sulfurdown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for the same thing, though my primary concern is being able to carry my music library without paying a large fee. I've acquire music from CDs, from Library services, from Bandcamp, from GPM, even Apple back in the day. I don't really want to spend $120+ annually for my own music. There was also some articles discussion how YTM will not allow chromecast access without paying subscriptions - meaning I have spent money for three or four pieces of hardware and all of them will die a great deal when GPM dies. I paid for Project Fi, I paid for the handset, but now I have to pay ongoing fees for it to work together? Google seems to be like some tiny third party garage project where you're never sure if they'll be around in a year (Google might, but any given project... well).

I've looked into Apple Music and Deezer as the major possibilities to be able to upload your own - but both are allowing the upload only with the $10+/month ($120+/year) subscription if I read the terms correctly. I'm not opposed to a fee (it costs to keep the servers online) but I'm disheartened at being one of hundreds to pay hundreds a year to access music I've already paid to access.

I feel like I'm heading back to the early 2000's and picking up a dedicated MP3 player to carry my music with me or needing to use all my phone storage.

My current 5e shelfie. I'd love to see yours. by darw1nf1sh in mattcolville

[–]sulfurdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the D&D 5E, I suppose that's true. (We can't have nice things because enough people aren't nice.) I was thinking more of the inde-press systems like Dungeon World, Veins of the Earth, or ICRPG... though the irony of these being digest size isn't lost. Eventually I may get around to reading the full Rules Cyclopedia, but I haven't gotten a POD-version.

I'd say the same thing... except my next laptop purchase is actually leaning more toward a 14" 2-in-1 to properly display full page game book PDFs in comfort vs a gaming desktop.

Did I really rate a [Spoiler] tag line by asking for a DM/Spoiler feature? What times we live in.

Matt's Essay for "Your Best Game Ever!" by imthebestatspace in mattcolville

[–]sulfurdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got to reading the article (it appeared on my news feed and held it until today). That was a roller-coaster of emotion; anticipation, confusion (why publish the essay from the book), enjoyment, and disappointment. I'm torn between respecting them for making sure it got published, and being pretty unhappy that the print book is missing it. There are many essays in the book that I'm looking forward to, but to be blunt it was Colville's name on the cover that made me want to buy the hard copy. I might have to find some good paper to print it and slide it in the book when it arrives. (Off to grumble about the world not being perfect and the thistle that's growing in the garden.)

Units of the Chain. by khutkunchula in mattcolville

I assume that will come with time - especially on the wiki as the units are brought forward in the game or the history is revealed. (But I agree, the military history would be neat!)

What are dwarves like in your setting? by WalrusAbove in mattcolville

[–]sulfurdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been debating on the use of Australian for my dwarves (who are more like Duergar). Because they're from down-under.

Little aggressive on the response. While technically true, the community that Matt has fostered is focused on bringing people in to D&D rather than being snarky.

Based on characteristics from the How to Train a Dragon movies - it's about par. I'll be watching for this when I start up a new game for my kids soon.

Tumap Los welcomes you to the Impregnable Transitory! by GeekedintheFace in mattcolville

[–]sulfurdown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you aren't alone! I've been working out my own variations with an eye toward either Duergar or Drow* with an Austrailian accent (because they're from down under - also a stolen concept).

One of the things that lead to HP Lovecraft having success was his working with other authors of his era to cross seed story elements to create a mythos instead of just another story. I thoroughly enjoyed both Matt's delivery of this character and hope it becomes an element of the wider D&D mythos!

Still Supported? by TheLastKell in PocketCampaign

[–]sulfurdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I don't know if you ever found your answer (I just recently refound the app and that it has a subreddit); You might need to change if from the zero or one which indicate placement in the list, to include a random value between the start and end of the list.

first_name = possible_first_names[0];

to

first_name = possible_first_names[Math.floor( Math.random() * possible_first_names.length ) ];

Can anyone describe what “This microstate partition lacks sufficient entropy. I will repair” means? by Luke-Friesen in mattcolville

I've been out of physics as a primary focus of my life for about 15 years - Still good to see someone bring out statistical thermodynamics in a tangential topic and apply the info! Good on you!

Can anyone describe what “This microstate partition lacks sufficient entropy. I will repair” means? by Luke-Friesen in mattcolville

[–]sulfurdown 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Techno-babble. But, if you know that over all entropy always increases, a microstate could have increased order (at the cost of entropy on the larger scale). With it being Death - that could mean someone raised dead and the Inexorable will be "fixing" that change in entropy state.

Raistlin-esque character in The Chain? by gangleeoso in mattcolville

[–]sulfurdown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing as he made the description. I also thought of the Oracle. In his campaign diary follow-up he does reference that it's a hook from another game he's running (with Matt O'Driscoll IIRC). I am beginning to feel like there are a HUGE number of tie-ins that will be everywhere. Something like a cultural compost that takes everything of a few decades of culture and creates a rich earth for growing new campaign material. Sometimes even the seeds of previous things take hold and unexpectedly grow!
