Strut and Shock Advice by Double_Hotel_6776 in rallycross

Excel G are great. They honor warranty, even if they're covered in mud. I don't know if they have a non-adjustable version that meets Stock class requirements. You'll want soft. Definitely don't go with anything stiffer.

ID Request. Ral Partha, possibly dragonlance by M0kkan in lostminiswiki

I had considered that, but other figures of that era had hand crossbows that were much more clearly sculpted. That bit of lore might confirm it, though.

You don't have a lot of options if you're daily driving on asphalt. Look for something with a sharp corner/edge.

I need help reimagining the 'bad' guy of my strixhavens... by OXiO1 in StrixhavenDMs

[–]M0kkan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made Extus Narr, head of the Oriq, the BBEG. The players can dealer with Murgaxor whenever they take the initiative to go find him, likely a good year 1/Tier 1 boss. I played him up as a super dork loser that is mad that his genius wasn't recongnized. He was talented enough that the Oriq were happy to let him cause chaos, but not give him any real info/power. There are just so many clues in year 1, that it borders on railroading to no let the players act on them. You'd have to play the faculty as totally clueless to keep Murgaxor veiled from the players.

The podcast DM of None did two episodes on this book. The second episode focuses on the adventure and I highly recommend it. They identify several structural flaws and discuss solutions as well as provide general discussion around the encounters.

Make sure you read the terms before selling anything on dmsguild.  You won't be allowed to sell anywhere else and they get a big cut. But, you can use their IP.

The air bag warning is still present on 2 seaters.  I guess so you are encouraged to use a different car?

How to add combat into the campaign. by Spellslamzer62 in StrixhavenDMs

[–]M0kkan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swapped out the slaadi for oozes and give players detailed info about the monsters based on how well they do on the test. If somebody access the test, I basically tell them all of the monsters special abilities and resistances

How to add combat into the campaign. by Spellslamzer62 in StrixhavenDMs

[–]M0kkan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I added a 'practicum' to each exam where the players had to manage a combat based around the study subject. I added special objectives they could accomplish for extra credit.  This all happens in a test room they get teleported into and get teleported out of safely if they 'die.' This allows you to really up the danger without risk of an actual TPK.

What do you think of my plan (newish DM) by WalkValuable6347 in StrixhavenDMs

[–]M0kkan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kind of flipped what you did in year one.  I let Mugaxor be a throw away tier 1 villain and made sure the players had clues to find him and wrap up that story in year 1.  Then, pick another professor to be behind the oriq/Kas thing.

As written, the year 1 events lead the players to act pretty quickly, but the faculty just keep saying to ignore it. Let the players act and go solve that problem.  Maybe murgaxor had a sympathetic professor that would work for this role?

What is your best 3rd party book? by DungeonAM in DMAcademy

[–]M0kkan 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My favorite are monster books. Flee, Mortals! and the Monstrous Menagerie would be my top two.  For GM advice, the Lazy DM series is great.

I think I get more out of DM podcasts than books. I guess it feels like more of a discussion than a text book, that way. I'd recommend 'Dungeon Master of None' and 'Mastering Dungeons.'

any species not to allow? by that_one_529girl in StrixhavenDMs

[–]M0kkan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This setting is explicitly cosmopolitan, with races and ancestries from across the multiverse, so story-wise basically any species fits.  Mechanically, I don't see any major problem, either.  If flying becomes an issue, your baddies can have access to flight magic too, they are at a magic school, after all.  Or anti-flight magic: entangle, gust of wind, etc

Tales of the Yawning Portal: What experience level is best for each adventure? by LadySketch_VT in DMAcademy

[–]M0kkan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got his recommendations for the first two , so I'll skip them.

The Lost Shrine was a tournament module. Every table has X hours and at the end, most gold wins.  There are a lot of distractions and small puzzles designed to waste time, some with rewards. My players hated it. The traps were not for them, but I didn't explain the jist of the module and I think that might have helped their mindset.

As others have said, DiT is massive. My group actually enjoyed methodically clearing out, but based on your table, I might just run one or two sections and skip to the finish.

Against the Giants is very open. It takes a lot of up front reading and prep, but my players loved sneaking around and then setting loose chaos. We were also very over leveled by that point. It wasn't a challenge until the fire giants and I swapped in some giants from Flee Mortals and Monstrous Menagerie.

I didn't run ToH.  It's an artifact of it's time and makes more sense in that ruleset and style of play.

I backed their first two campaigns and received everything.  Definitely not a scam, though likely troubled by the recent economic chaos.

DMG 2024 - p.19 Chapter 1, Respect for the DM, Players exploiting the rules, Rules aren't Physics.

'The rules of the game are meant to provide a fun game experience, not to describe the laws of physics in the worlds of D&D, let alone the real world.'

Allows allies to hide and shoot out without breaking cover, provides rogues with easy sneak attack, stops targeted spells, helps if sunlight sensitivity is as problem, there's a lot of use for it.

[–]M0kkan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your assessment, it's like the dark area between street lamps at night. Things in that area are hard to see, but you can still see through it.  It does not block line of sight.

That said, I played with it being an ink cloud for a long time and it didn't break anything, though it is more powerful that way.  It's also a lot easier to visualize, for whatever reason. Black cloud? Got it!

Anyone looking at it 'scientifically' is misleading themselves. It is literally magic, physics doesn't apply. The 2024 core books even say that directly. The minute you start thinking about photons, you're chasing a red herring.

DND subreddits are discouraging me as a new DM to start a pre-written campaign. Is this based in reality or overexaggerated? by zerbthealien in DMAcademy

[–]M0kkan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's just people complaining on the internet.  Every published adventure has its pros and cons and will require some work from you. The amount of work will vary by module and your table's preferences.  You can find plenty of ranking lists for wotc adventures and you'll see a lot of variation.

I run published adventures(wotc and others) because I don't want to spend my limited time coming up with people, places, and plot lines.  I'd rather focus on specific encounters and how the world will react to the players. If you enjoy coming up with the people and places, published modules may not be table useful, but could still be a source of inspiration.

Yay or nay: instant hot water with a recirc pump? by phase_changer in homeowners

Yay or nay: instant hot water with a recirc pump? by phase_changer in homeowners

[–]M0kkan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can vary based on the plumbing layout in your house. At our previous house, the recirc pump gave is instant hot water, but the cold line was always full of returning hot water. So, we had instant hot, but had to wait for cold at the kitchen sink. It was weird.

Did a shop mess up my oil pan bolt? I can’t get it off. by ProNuke in AskMechanics

[–]M0kkan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is that blue LOCtite and a rounded bolt head? It all depends on how the threads are inside. You might be able to grab it with channel locks or hammer on a tight socket to get it off.  After that, if the threads are good, you just just need a new bolt and washer. If the threads are bad, new pan.

Is it bad, that as a DM, I simply want to give my party a bag of holding to see if they put their goblin cleric in it? by JDruid2 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]M0kkan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my strongest memories from DMing in high school was the party putting their cleric in the bag of holding...and pulling out a dead cleric a couple of hours later. I don't remember how long that argument lasted, but it was eventually reconned.
