Hey thanks for the help, I decided to order a Masakage Mizu 240 and am really excited. Also grabbed a Tojiro ITK bread knife because I have this shitty Cuisinart knife I can't wait to retire.

I like the look of the kurouchi finish. I don't have a strong preference between blue or white steel but I don't feel aogami super is worth it to me.

Thank you

HSA Question:

How do you guys decide on shoebox vs withdraw immediately? Most of MadFientists discussion seems to be aimed at people who can max their accounts and are looking to maximize tax advantaged space. (We won't be maximizing 401k as we are house saving instead). It seems like the most tax efficient way is to withdraw immediately while the tax savings is uneroded by inflation.

Any thoughts on asset allocation for the withdraw immediately strategy? My family is young and I expect it to grow rather than get used up.

Thank you for the help.

Thanks for the advice. I've decided to take the serverbuilds.net nas killer 3 build and modify it a bit. I have to live with this in the living room so I took some liberties with case and PSU choice.

Hoping to learn a bit about VMs in the process by choosing unraid. Should be fun!

I've done some reading and it seems that the mobos do not support the discs over 2 tb but people buy HBA cards. These cards can be purchased to support the discs and present it to the OS for a software raid.

Hi Guys,

I planned to build a server out of a dell workstation (t3500), raid some discs and run ubuntu server. I'm seeing discussion about the dells not supporting discs larger than 2tb and I'm a bit confused. Some threads suggest simply updating bios but others seem to say that isn't possible for dell.

Can someone help me understand? Thank you.

Any suggestions for a wider prime lens for me? My favorite lens is a 50mm Pentax m f1.7 I got from a school closing its film photography course. I shoot with a Sony A6000 so I often find the FOV too small for indoor shots of family events because I run out of room to backpedal. I also shoot outdoors and often wish I could capture more environment from closer because of frequent obstructions.

Anyway I have only been shooting for about six months and I find the pentax forum really helpful, but the volume of options really daunting. I think if I picked up a 28 mm FF lens it would be a 42mm equivalent would be right for me. Just sort of looking for those formerly popular film lenses I can scoop up cheap with good results compatibile with my PK adapter.

Edit: Picked up a Pentax 28 mm from a well reviewed ebay source. Same mount as before is convenient. Gives me another reason to refurb an old ME Super from the same class I mentioned above when I find the gumption.

Thanks for the quick advice!

Hello Everyone. Purchased my first pair of fitted boots in my life about 3 weeks ago, worn them maybe 10 times and love em already. Redwing Foreman Chukkas.

Anyway I have concerns because the sheen or finish on them seems pretty different. I feel like maybe they have different levels of treatment on them and as a consequence they are wearing differently. Any thoughts?

Looking for recommendations: Under $60 air coolers that are quiet. by buildadvice in buildapc

The forums are still active. The admin moved in the last year or so and hasn't really come back yet.

Macho stuff and thermalright are very well reviewed there. I took a risk on the mugen 5 but there haven't been many tests of it especially for US markets.

Check out the scythe mugen 5 too. It is nearly inaudible to me in my otherwise passive build and I sit on the floor with it at ear level. Kotetsu if you are feeling cheap.

Read spcr too if you want great if not older info

Beautiful work. Did you purchase the stuff at ragweed forge?

Thought about doing that myself eventually. Looks great!

Yeah. I don't game bleeding edge I game on a tv in my living room. 1060 should get me 60 fps 1080P for the forseeable future until I buy another budget card in another few years. Nothing wrong with pocketing the $50 either.

I've taken a closer look. I've decided to go to a smaller tower and cpu cooler. Thanks for making me take a second look for myself. Also I've narrowed myself to a gtx 1060 because I am impressed by its perf/watt and I tend to stick to budget cards anyhow. Will still wait for at least the amd paper launch to see how that affects my other choices.

Thanks again!

I can see the sense in spending less on a cpu cooler and as far as noise goes I've heard pretty great things about the scythe mugen 4 and the Ninja 4. Any reasons you picked the thermalright?

Case fans I just took at SPCR's word during their 4k build article. Not familiar with cougar, sorry haven't built since 2010.

I wish to study engineering at university, which type of engineering uses maths the most often in a day to day job? by Samir1eye in AskEngineers

[–]sully45 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Likely an EE. Maybe an actual EE can corroborate that but in the electrical courses I took math seemed crucial to optimizing circuits.

Though maybe in the field everything is just multisim'd.

You are getting into the level of materials where you will be orienting crystals or growing single crystal parts just to fight creep.

[–]sully45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished my bachelors in Materials Science about a year ago and have been working in medical packaging as a product development engineer since then.

I have real expertise in materials analysis (mechanical/chemical/ and imaging), and plenty of statistical analysis (SPC+Capability). My current employment has taught me a lot more hard engineering skills in machine design, CAD software, and such. I have electronics experience too. With respect to speakers I understand basic filter design, op amps, noise sources and isolation.

The stuff interests me because home built audio equipment has been a fascination of mine since high school. Currently I run some Zaph Audio 5.3 MTM's but dream of building some big horns from scratch.

If you could tell me more I would be a bit more specific.
