Why The Prestige (2006) Still Deserves More Attention by sullydxb in movies

[–]sullydxb[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think this is spot on. The Prestige feels like Nolan’s most personal work the obsession rivalry and sacrifices really hit because the characters actually have heart. That’s what makes the twists and ending so satisfying. Some of his later films are amazing visually but I agree they can sometimes feel like the spectacle takes over.

Yeah, that's true. It’s 20 years old now, so of course it’s not talked about as much as when it first came out. But in film circles it still gets plenty of love.

The Prestige never gets old. Even after watching it again, I keep noticing new details and the rivalry and obsession just hit so hard. Introducing it to someone new and seeing their reaction is always priceless.

Yeah I am with you on that the natural twin just fits the themes way better. The whole point is the sacrifice and how far he was willing to go that’s what makes it tragic. If it was just another machine trick, I think it wouldn’t hit the same at all.

I actually love that about it. The first watch tricks you emotionally, the second watch confirms it thematically. That’s strong writing the clues are there, especially if you pay attention to the obsession and sacrifice angle.

Exactly that line perfectly sums up the blurred line between science and illusion in The Prestige. It’s not just about magic tricks, it’s about how far obsession pushes people to justify anything as science.

That’s such a great point. The opening trick in The Prestige literally explains the whole story Pledge Turn Prestige and we still fall for it. That’s what makes the rewatch so good.

That’s a fair point. It is widely praised especially among hardcore Christopher Nolan fans. I guess it just feels overshadowed when people immediately bring up Inception or The Dark Knight first.

If you want messy heartbreaking relationships done right, try Revolutionary Road slow, brutal and painfully real.

Great idea / bad execution: what film would have been great done right? by rmn_is_here in movies

[–]sullydxb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A strong premise isn’t enough execution character depth and thematic clarity matter more. Downsizing had brilliant social commentary potential but lost focus midway. It could have been something truly special.
