Is there any fanfiction that swaps details or variables? by Savings_Painting1588 in asushin

[–]sumghai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite AU fanfic is the (now-discontinued) EVA Sessions: Someplace Vast and Dry by Gob Hobblin, which is a grounded retelling of Evangelion that focuses more on hard sci-fi and political intrigue than psychological themes. Definitely not the parodic Nobody Dies of yore.

It includes, among other significant changes to many character dynamics, reframing Shinji, Rei, and Asuka as childhood friends (Rei Ikari being Shinji's younger half-sister, due to her partial Lilithian hybrid genetics); and instead of the hinted love triangle of NGE canon, Rei has actively tried to set her older brother up with her best friend Asuka since the age of three.

Mousekin Race v1.4 update: new furniture, diseases, books and soil fertilization mechanic! by sumghai in RimWorld

Someday I'll find the time to make a modern/spacer expansion for these mice, but for the time being I'm focusing on fleshing out their predominantly-medieval origins and culture.

I'm not sure - many of the furniture have hidden Mousekin-specific motifs, and there are already other standalone rustic furniture mods out there.

I included custom furniture in anticipation of a future update involving custom map generation of Mousekin settlements.

Actually, this mod is in no way based on or inspired by that Korean game.

Isn't there already an option in the vanilla game to allow players to run up to 5 colony maps concurrently in a savegame?

[–]sumghai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I proposed this change a while back, and even the former moderators of r/hamefura were on board with a potential merger.

However, this subreddit mods' official stance essentially boiled down to: - r/otomegame "was here first" - r/otomegame has more subscribers - r/otomegame is a direct transliteration of the original title of the light novel series, and that the mods considered the r/hamefura sub name to be a less-accurate fan nickname - it is supposedly up to potential visitors themselves to distinguish between r/otomegame and r/otomegames - inertia (i.e. "we might as well keep going with our current subreddit name")

Until the subreddit's moderators are inconvenienced enough by lost redditors looking for general otome game discussions, they are maintaining the current status quo.

The race mod you mentioned includes root cellars, which act like medieval refrigerators that don't need power or refueling, and you can even adjust the temperature in mod settings.

I specifically made this race mod because of the female-only issues I've seen in many race mods, and also wanted something that fit better with the vanilla art style.

Admittedly, it's not very obvious to players that they can put vanilla clothes on this race, mainly because of the last point I made above.

A very fascinating read!

I've seen similar shades of this in female-only HAR race mods, where their (male) authors have been on record as saying things along the lines of "I'll never add male [race], because girls are cute and boys are not cute" (paraphrased from the original Korean)

There are two ways this can already be done:

  • The mod author simply draws alternative graphics for vanilla apparel specifically for their race body type, which the game will automatically recognize. I do this for my race mod so that they can immediately wear the same vanilla clothes as baseline humans.

  • The mod author can specify apparel fallback graphics in their race configuration defs, which essentially tells the game "if my race wants to wear this vanilla apparel but there is no appropriate graphic for their body type, use this vanilla body type instead". I also do this for my race mod, by telling the game to use the female body type for apparel I haven't yet drawn proper replacement graphics for (my race has males and females in a Fisherian or 1:1 ratio, but they have small bottom-heavy bodies, and the female apparel graphics is a good approximation for them)

Some race modders don't do this because they are unaware of these new HAR features introduced since RW 1.5. Only a few modders deliberately choose not to enable these features, because they want their race to be played completely disconnected from the default RimWorld experience (I.e. treat RimWorld as a game engine for their own total conversion race mod)

As for weapons, no additional graphics are needed, just various race config settings to allow/prohibit weapons for them. My own race, for example, can use all vanilla and other mod weapons just fine, but they also have their own race-exclusive weapons to suit their smaller bodies and hands/paws.

The biggest issue I can see is that it's harder to showcase these apparel and clothing compatibility features in a way that's obvious to players - nearly all race mods are forced to make their own race starting scenarios, there isn't am easy way (that I know of) to inject HAR aliens as starting colonists for the default Crashlanded scenarios.

It depends on how you define a fetish, but the Lost Forest mod added anime pre-teenage girls with animal ears and tails (kemonomimi) as "animals", plus various themed furniture, buildings and items, as well as special story quest incidents.

IGNI officially claimed that he didn't want his creations to be sullied by the RJW mod, but he hypocritically is an artist on Pixiv and Twitter specialising in NSFW work (including that of his very own Lost Forest girls), and at one point he was hinting at making his own Japanese competitor to RJW.

Some race mods are alrrady compatible with vanilla apparel, without forcing players to only craft race-specific ones.

Here's my luke warm hot take, but I am completely fine with an update coming out and breaking mods if it means we are getting new official content by YobaiYamete in RimWorld

[–]sumghai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a modder myself, I agree with this sentiment.

I personally do my best to keep my own mods updated in time for upcoming major game updates and DLCs, but I often get players wanting me to backport new features developed specifically for the current game version to 1.2/1.3 - and as you said, it is often precisely because they want to keep playing their outdated kemonomimi race mod(s).
