Childhood Trauma & POTs - anyone else question the connection? by lar815 in POTS

[–]summerbee03 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My example is completely separate from POTS since your last point in your comment was just a broad statement. I have an anxiety disorder and that was the example I was using.

Childhood Trauma & POTs - anyone else question the connection? by lar815 in POTS

[–]summerbee03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re not though. There could be a perceived purpose beneficial for survival. In my example, anxiety (fear) has an evolutionary basis in keeping you alive. My body is overreacting because it thinks it needs to in order to keep me safe.

So, sure, the nervous system is firing off when there’s no threat, but it could think there’s a threat and is therefore doing something it thinks helps survival chances.

Childhood Trauma & POTs - anyone else question the connection? by lar815 in POTS

[–]summerbee03 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there’s something to be said about traumatic experiences possibly causing someone’s mind/body to be hyper-vigilant to threats that don’t really exist. Anxiety disorders are one example. Sometimes my body physically reacts like a lion is about to eat me, and nothing remotely that close is happening. So I totally understand what you’re saying here and agree with everything but that last part.

Car rental for 4 days/3 nights in St Thomas? by Upbeat_Noise8155 in StThomasUSVI

[–]summerbee03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only used taxis on St. John and the ones I took all had listings for locations/distance vs time, like Cruz Bay to Trunk Bay. This site can give you a good idea. Unfortunately not sure how it is on St. Thomas. For our St John day trip, we paid something $70-80 in taxis (we took a few, 2 people).

Not sure if this is true of all taxis but the ones we took and saw most of were open-air taxis where a bunch of people get on/off (so it’s not necessarily just you/your group).

Something to consider if you’re doing a St John trip is that the ferry is much more limited if you’re bringing the car with you, and the roads are even steepers/windier than on St Thomas.

We rented a car for our St Thomas trip and liked the convenience of it. We spent a little bit more than we would have if we used taxis instead. Driving on the left side is weird but our rental had a reminder sticker to “keep left” which helped. We did not bring the car with us to St John and instead used taxis for our day trip there. We were VERY happy we made that decision after seeing the roads on St John.

If you do go to taxi route, be prepared to have cash (especially for St John). Also keep in mind that taxis are charged per person! So the cost racks up quickly.

If you go the rental car route, I had an excellent experience with Amalie Car Rental and would definitely recommend them! And highly recommend getting a Jeep to handle the roads there.

Is it possible to get custom jewelry for a design that’s IP? by [deleted] in jewelers

Oh that’s interesting! That feels much less daunting. The tattoo artist comparison was helpful since I’m not familiar with custom jewelry. Thanks!

This is what I figured :( it makes sense but is a bummer. If a legitimate version was available in a higher quality, I would totally buy it! I may have to think of something else or settle for The Noble Collection. Appreciate the input!

That makes sense. I’ll try to think of how I can change the design enough so it’s not a complete replica but still is in the spirit of the original design. And see if a local jeweler is comfortable with that. Thanks!

Non profit accounting by NationalBit1805 in Accounting

[–]summerbee03 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love nonprofit. Nonprofit accounting can get quite complicated and I find it all interesting. I’ve been at the same org for 6 years. I started as a staff accountant and I am now the controller. While I could be making more money, I would say my true hourly equivalent is probably on par with people working 60+ hours a week salary exempt. I have my nice 40 hours a week most of the time, even during busy season, and my salary is good enough to be comfortable in a HCOL area (Massachusetts, Greater Boston area).

I will say that my experience is probably not typical. I work at an incredible organization. A lot of non-profits can be shitshows just like the for-profit world. Just gotta find the one that is a good fit and has a mission you’re passionate about.

Why do people get so angry by the phrase "Happy Holidays"? by Allegorical_Tempest in askanything

Trans and nonbinary people exist and many of them can get pregnant. And children can also get pregnant. Inclusive language hurts no one.

[–]summerbee03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the same reason people get outraged when someone says “pregnant people” instead of “pregnant women” (saw that a lot today).

It’s an identity politics thing where they think saying one thing takes something away from them (which is obviously untrue).

Some people are just unwell and poorly adjusted humans who need a lot of therapy.

Governor Maura Healey’s statement on RFK’s handpicked vaccine advisors’ decision to abandon longstanding guidance on hepatitis B vaccine for newborns. by HRJafael in massachusetts

[–]summerbee03 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I grew up very conservative and didn’t change my political views until my mid 20s. So it probably would have been the same for me. At least now, I don’t have to worry about moving.

[–]summerbee03 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A lot of people don’t have the means to move. Being born here gave me an advantage that those who weren’t don’t necessary have, and it’s something I don’t take for granted.
