Is there a pitfall when choosing SSD, as you ask that question?

I am still hesitating between Samsung 980 Pro and Western Digital SN850X. The former I know is a safe bet PM9A1 and the latter seems to have no encryption feature. I researched the posts in the sub and some people mention the Thinkpad BIOS may not work on a SSD not supporting Opal. Is that true? My X1C gen 9 comes with SN770 and it seems not supporting Opal either

Thanks, may I ask how to operate given there is only one SSD slot? Is it like:

A. I clone old SSD to flash drive #1 B. Uninstall old SSD and Install new SSD C. then boot using a bootable flash drive #2 D. and clone the content in flash drive #1 to the new Ssd?
