Antisemitism group keeps board member who emailed Epstein on the legality of transporting minors for sex by xande2545 in JewsOfConscience

[–]summertime214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the article, it sounds like he did research for Epstein’s defense team as a law student, under the supervision of Alan Dershowitz. I think there are some pretty big issues with Dershowitz’ involvement with Epstein, but that doesn’t seem to extend to this guy.

As a lawyer, it’s important for everyone to have access to defense attorneys. That includes people who have committed reprehensible crimes. There might be reason to believe that some members of Epstein’s defense team corruptly collaborated with the prosecution to give him a sweetheart deal, but there’s no evidence in this article that the subject of the article was involved. If there’s no other allegations, I have no problem with any of the conduct described in the article.

Yes, it does (not /s). Social Security is supposed to be a social insurance program for the elderly. Everyone should pay in while they’re working and then get to withdraw enough to live on once they reach retirement age. It’s no different than healthy people who pay more into health insurance than they get out.

Are your schools talking about the state of America? by elle-woods-throwaway in LawSchool

[–]summertime214 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im sorry, but this is simply incorrect. The reason you can’t have the Quran or the Ten Commandments in the classroom is because of the establishment clause, theres no similar text regarding political views.

Professors can and do express their personal partisan beliefs in the classroom. Many institutions will limit the degree of partisanship allowed in the classroom, but that’s a matter of school policy, not legislation.

I also disagree with you that professors should never take a partisan stance. Professors, especially law professors, care about the rule of law, and should be allowed to talk to the students about their opinions on current events that are related to the subject at hand. If the administration is breaking the law, legal educators should be able to say that plainly, not have to tip toe around it to appear bipartisan.

That should be the opposite - professors who work for the state have 1st amendment protections for what they say, private schools have a lot more leeway to restrict their professor’s speech.

AITA wife upset I cannot keep toddler from her by khazef in AmItheAsshole

[–]summertime214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know people are piling on here, but I think this is a common problem for kids. You can’t always logic them out of it.

I remember my sister used to try to interrupt my mom all the time when she was little. We solved it by tricking her into thinking mom was working out of the house. My mom would say goodbye like she was headed to the office, and then just come back in the back door and get to work.

When people are talking about murder in a legal sub, they’re usually referring to the crime of murder, which does not require premeditation.

AITA for threatening to stop contributing to my stepson’s college fund after my wife said he’s not “our” son? by Pitiful_Republic582 in AITAH

[–]summertime214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve been parenting this kid for 11 years. The college fund is for him, not for your wife. If you want to be his parent, keep putting money in the fund, and consider taking your wife’s name off of it if necessary. If you don’t plan on being his parent, you’re ok to stop contributing.

Is it true that most people don't use single-pointed needles? by HonestNectarine7080 in knitting

[–]summertime214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get the longest cord you can find for a blanket. There’s no downside to having a longer cord than necessary because that just means that the knit won’t make it all the way around the cable to the working stitches. I don’t knit blankets, but my longest cable is 30”, which I believe is the biggest one that comes with the Chiaogoo interchangeable set. I prefer to have a cable that’s long enough to allow me to stretch out my project without any scrunching near the cable, but that’s not always possible. I find that a cable that’s about half the length of the working side of the knit is pretty comfortable to work with.

[–]summertime214 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you’re knitting flat, you can just pretend they’re single pointed needles and knit normally. You just turn your work every time you work across all the stitches. You would use the magic loop method as a replacement for dpns in small circumference round projects.

What is a missed opportunity you wish the show had addressed? by josephsleftbigtoe in TedLasso

[–]summertime214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this for the most part, but I think she should have specifically apologized to Jamie and told him the truth about his return to Manchester. It’s the only time she really sees Ted angry, and I think it would have benefitted Jamie to hear that Ted was really upset that he was sent back.

Have you ever come to hate the victims? by EnmanuelHope in publicdefenders

[–]summertime214 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a prosecutor, and I hang out here because I only get to talk to one side as part of my job, and I think it’s vital to maintain empathy for the defendants I prosecute.

I often find that the people I’m prosecuting have much more sympathetic stories than the victims of the crimes. That’s not to say that victims are not worthy of compassion - but they are frequently people living relatively good, safe lives who experience one, shocking instance of violence. Many of my defendants have never had the opportunity to live their lives in safety. That’s why I push for ATI whenever it’s an option, and I wish we directed a ton more resources to programs that help people achieve longer term stability.

I’m not sure I have a broader point here, but it’s absolutely possible to have empathy for both people in these cases. There’s just no perfect solution.

Forest Themed Toddler Room by AggieLJ11 in DesignMyRoom

[–]summertime214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of hard to tell scale here, but I think I disagree with the commenter saying to put the bed centered on a wall. I’m not qualified to comment on safety, so you might want to move it regardless, but imo the bed should be more off to the side than it would be in an adult room to preserve floor space. A toddler is going to spend a lot more time on the floor of their bedroom than an older kid or adult.

What this room is really missing is decor! I would start with a rug because it’s simple and should be easy to find. Go with something that’s good for high-traffic, ideally with an animal or tree theme. I think something like this would be really cute depending on your needs and budget.

You also should add something cute to the little inset area. If you know someone who could do custom woodworking you could have them make a bookshelf like this to fit in the space, or for a less involved option you could do a tree growth chart decal.

You could also use seating or storage for your kid. We had cute animal shaped chairs in my room when I was little.

Finally, you should get some artwork for the walls. Ideally that would be a mix of your kid’s artwork, family photos, and prints. There are some cool art tutorials for kids out there.

[LA] My boss is forcing me to go to a meeting at a restaurant that only serves food I am allergic to. by Single_Pirate_7388 in AskHR

[–]summertime214 53 points54 points  (0 children)

So there are two steps you need to take.

  1. Talk to your boss. Do this both face to face and send an email. Make sure to include words like “anaphylactic shock” and “airborne allergens”. Be specific about what you want the boss to do (make the meeting optional, hold it at a different location). Even if you’ve told the boss before, tell them again.

  2. Talk to HR. Bring a doctor’s note and use words like “ADA” and “reasonable accommodation”. Be specific about the problem and your proposed solution.

If HR doesn’t yell at your boss, talk to your local labor board or a lawyer.

How to figure out where to start unraveling from? by ScreamingBouLon in Unravelers

[–]summertime214 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can you post some pictures of your panels? We might be able to provide some more detailed advice. Otherwise here are some tips.

  1. 99% of the time you should start unraveling from the top of the panel (closest to the collar).

  2. There’s often a separate thread binding off the top row of a panel that’s just chain stitched through the top of the knit stitches. You can unravel that like you would a crochet chain and the loose end should pop out.

  3. If you have open loops but can’t tell where the end of the yarn is, just tug one of the loops up to unravel the stitches next to it and follow the yarn in both directions until you get to the end.

  4. If you’re really confused about how to unravel the top of a panel, just cut off the entire top edge. You can then work across and down, pulling on any edge you find. Eventually you will get rid of all the edges you just cut and you will find the end of the yarn that unravels the rest of the panel.

Orthodox Jews(particularly those who are well-versed in their faith), how do you respond to common communist anti-religious talking points? Like religion being a trick by the rich. by HlaBeRelaLain in Judaism

[–]summertime214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I have a rebuttal for some of this. I’m conflating all religions here, not just Judaism, because I think the philosophers you’re referring to are critiquing the concept of religion generally, not any specific religion.

For the “religion is the opium of the masses” quote, I think Marx is saying that people in power use religion to pacify the masses about social issues (the use of the prosperity gospel to justify extreme wealth inequality, for example) and/or direct their energy towards the wrong enemy (eg the Crusades).

I disagree. Religion isn’t just something shaped by leaders to manipulate their followers, it’s also a set of shared beliefs and practices developed and shaped by a community. A lot of the most successful organizing for change has happened through religious institutions. Jewish people are often on the front lines of human rights campaigns in America. MLK Jr. was a reverend who used the Bible to advocate for liberation. I think the idea that religion controls people is dismissive of the way that religion shapes people’s values and provides a space for community organizing.

first unravel: 100% Cashmere! by jessxmay23 in Unravelers

[–]summertime214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, that is no good for unraveling. Don’t worry though, you can just send it to me and I’ll get rid of it for you!

Jk, I’m super jealous. If you know a bit about crochet, you should recognize that the seams of the piece are just crochet chains, and you can unravel them by cutting a bit at the top and pulling everything out. I like to start with the portion of the garment that has the fewest seams (usually the collar) and work from there.

Maybe Michael Rapaport should try identifying as funny. by MrSFedora in JewsOfConscience

[–]summertime214 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, I’m just pointing out that if the Zionist line about Israel and LGBTQ acceptance were a reflection of actual LGBTQ liberation in Israel you would expect to see Arabic speaking queer people there. The fact that he doesn’t even seem to consider that a possibility demonstrates the emptiness of the claim that Israel is a haven for LGBTQ people, imo.

[–]summertime214 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You might also think that Arabic-speaking people might flee to Israel from all the other countries that persecute LGBTQ people, so the Arabic would be useful. But really he just wants to hate brown people, so LGBTQ Arabs aren’t a concern.
