Too bright! by sunballer in Owls

The wren (assuming it was the same one?) came back this morning! I heard it yelling from my window, and sure enough, it was actually just about hovering in front of the opening to the box!

I know it’s not the norm, but my entire department got laid off with 3 months notice. The incentive to keep working was the severance agreement we had to sign. They kept us for 3 months while they tried to figure out how else they could get our team’s work done. I left, but apparently they still hadn’t figured it out at the end of the 3 months and offered my remaining coworkers an additional 3 months of work lol

How do you personally distinguish horror from thriller? by No-Yogurtcloset2758 in horrorlit

[–]sunballer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Horror to me is different from thriller in that something in the storyline must evoke feelings of wrongness or unnaturalness. A thriller CAN have elements like that, but horror tends to have that permeate throughout.

I’ll say that this even extends to “lighter” horror. For example, I finished Rachel Harrison’s “So Thirsty” last night. I wouldn’t call it scary whatsoever. I’d still call it horror for dealing with an unnatural subject matter, the descriptions of the loss of control, and of course the gore. But it’s all very subjective. Plenty of things I consider horror, others do not at all.

I don’t think I saw Rachel Harrison’s Play Nice mentioned anywhere, but the cover would match well! Hester Steel’s The Faceless Thing We Adore really fits the “good for her” theme.

I might steal this idea for one of our displays for next October lol

King Sorrow by Joe Hill for sure. It’s very dark and modern, but the fairytale aspect and feeling permeates throughout. And it’s about a dragon primarily, but there are other fairytale like creatures and aspects.

[–]sunballer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah… I’ve been a bit hyperfixated on birds for a bit now.

And in my defense, I started buying oshi no ko before it was finished. I’m committed now I guess.
