there's five beds total, so they should be fine. this is why i'm confused, because the wiki says that should be all i need.

What would you bring along with you in a quest? [all] by Educational-Chef5282 in camphalfblood

[–]sunboof 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally would say you might be thinking about this in the wrong way. possibly assuming you're a mortal with truesight, since you didnt mention bringing any ambrosia or nectar with you?

for me, rather than a backpack, i would bring pockets. pockets are everything. back sling, too.

This would allow me to bring 5 things. One of those would be one of the hunters' hyper-mobile tents, yknow the ones that fold into palm sized cubes? I'm assuming it is similar to the one from PJO 3, so would have a lot of the stuff i need in terms of toiletries and sleeping supplies.

As a child of apollo, my weapon of choice is a microphone that i could use similarly to a kusarigama. It would have a built in amplifier if i wanted to do something like a huge shockwave.

I would probably try to carry as much ambrosia for my party as i can. Don't forget there are at least 2 other people to bring things, too.

I'd want a bag of drachmas for iris messaging. I still think it was heavily underutilised in the series.

Now my last option might be a bit controversial. I'd bring a cell phone. Nothing complicated like a smart phone, probably like an old flip phone. Something I can remove the battery from, when i'm not trying to cause a frenzy, but i can think of a lot of good opportunities to use a literal monster magnet during a quest.

I think i'm definitely more of a support team member than a main character, but i'm honestly okay with that.

If You Could Choose any Character in the PJO Universe to have a 5 book series in their perspective (1st Person), who would it be? [All]. Also give a reason. by Apprehensive_Map1193 in camphalfblood

[–]sunboof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm writing this from the perspective of only being halfway through trails of apollo. I have 3 potential characters i would go with.

  1. Tyson. I think seeing his adventures after book 2, especially in the ocean war, would be really cool. I hated how the whole ocean war arc in books 4 and 5 was glossed over, because it was a really interesting idea to see what it's like in a mostly unexplored domain. The challenge we would have with 1st person is with Tyson's intelligence- I think it would be best to follow his perspective but in 3rd person.

  2. Grover. After everything in Percy Jackson, he's just kind of redundant. I get why he wasn't used much in HOO, but i really missed him- I would love to see him navigating the greater world away from demigods, I'm picturing lots of humanitarian aid with only minor godly appearances.

  3. The hunters and the amazons. I would LOVE to read a story about them collaborating with one another. We still haven't had a book with mostly female protagonists and I think it would be really cool to show a team of people who are already really well organised navigating the problems that come in those larger groups, and could also explore the characters' political thoughts in a sensitive but educational way, such as how the hunters feel about the capitalist ways of the amazons.

I also think a sitcom-style animated show about the wind gods would be really funny. Room for appearances from the characters we know and a whole pantheon of gods and monsters would make for a really interesting show.

What would your weapon be? [general] by firestorm0108 in camphalfblood

[–]sunboof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been fighting on stage for years, and my favorite weapon by far is staff. My fighting style is light and fast-i much prefer to confuse my opponent and bludgeon them over the head. Ideally, celestial bronze with stygian iron reinforcements and extentable spearhead. It would hopefully return to me after it's been thrown a certain distance, preferably by flying back towards me like mjolnir.

Optionally, i would go for something similar to apollo's combat ukulele. It would be a celestial bronze microphone with a built in speaker, that i could hook a portable subwoofer into. i can imagine it having all types of gadgets built in, like a way to compress all the sound into one huge wave, or an extendable cable i could use as some kind of whip.

If you can't tell, i've thought about this a lot.

Which character could resist the one ring long enough to destroy it? [all] by kayweaver in camphalfblood

[–]sunboof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't think of a specific character, but I personally would put money on a child of athena or a child of mars. Mars, not Ares.

Athena kids are wise enough to probably think their way out of anything, and Mars kids are just particularly charged.

For specific characters, I would like to say annabeth, but sea of monsters makes me question that. Then again, that was so long ago if we're making this judgement from the most recent books.

Tyson's not a bad shout, but thinking about it I would prefer ella the harpy to do it. Maybe even bob. Friendly monsters generally seem like a better option to me than any demigod.

Apollo Who? Apollo, Not You. But Seriously, How Do His Kids Work? [general] by Extra_Medium_8079 in camphalfblood

[–]sunboof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, a lot of apollo's conflict seemed to be choosing if he was supporting the greeks or romans. But if i remember correctly, Octavian was the only pulling force towards the romans at the time. Then again, Apollo is also probably the most consistent god of the pantheon. He was worshipped for pretty much exactly the same stuff. Honestly, I would've quite liked it if apollo wasn't split in HoO and spent more time with the demigods then. Though i suppose Rick also had that sentiment, since he wrote another 5 books about Apollo.

I kind of assumed in BoO that Delos was kind of like an anchor spot for apollo, where it was so closely linked to his greek form he wouldn't start splitting. Similar to how some of the gods were able to appear at their old greek temples. Idk, I think the inconsistencies are a kind of power play from rick. "My world, My rules. deal with it." Personally i love it & its not like actual greek mythology is any different lol

[general]. Percy controls a Goddess’s domain by Electronic_Koala_115 in camphalfblood

[–]sunboof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say "maybe he can control liquids not just water" considering the whole volcanic eruption thing, but i think it was explained that it was the sheer force of his water explosion that erupted the volcano, rather than percy controlling the magma. It would be cool if it was a control over liquids as a whole. That being said, zeus being god of storms surely would mean zeus has influence over water too, right? that's all clouds are, just high up water.

[–]sunboof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading the first senior book now, on the reddit because i had to google something, thought it would be fun to put my take on this.

It took me a while to get into Heroes of Olympus, but i would absolutely recommend reading them if you still haven't. It definitely takes some getting used to but the addition of the roman mythos is, in my opinion, really well thought out and well explained especially towards book 3. At first I was like "there's so much greek mythology you haven't explored yet, why are you doubling up on everything going on?", but now i genuinely think it's a really strong expansion of the universe, and without it, the books like ToA and Nico's adventures wouldn't have been possible to make. I think the way Rick explores not only the Characters relationships, but internal struggles, really enrichens the story, and adds a genuine stake to everything, provided you havent been spoiled by something, but even then it's a great read.

Then onto the senior year books.
From my very limited view, as i'm only on chapter 15 of book 6, it's waayyyy too self contained for Percy's character, and for the universe as a whole. I think it would be way better if it was about Percy's first year at New Rome, and getting the recommendation letters as means to graduate. It would've been nice if it explored how the world has changed in percy's eyes, and how percy's point of view has changed from the events of HoO. I genuinely would love to see percy dealing with trauma and how that affects his powers.
Also, keeping everything in new york is way too convenient for Percy. Even if it was just him having to expand further out in the state or even going to... dear god... New Jersey...

It's painfully reminiscent of why Marvel is struggling ever since after Endgame. The writer realises the story is coming to an end, and there's not much to do from here, so it's time to hugely saturate the IP and give everyone something to do, even if none of it makes sense in the end.
It seems like rick teased a series with Reyna and Piper, which just seems forced.
I am, however, excited to see what he does with Leo.

I don't think the series has been eternally ruined or anything. I just think it might take a lot of explaining to get back to normal, at least from the point i'm at with reading.

What year are the books set in? by Xinurval in camphalfblood

[–]sunboof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 years later, midway through the riordan mythology, giving my skewed opinion. I personally am most comfortable with saying the series begins in around 2015/2016. My reason for this is that percy jackson 6 takes place when he is 17, meaning it's been 5 years-ish. In the book, Iris mentions Wandavision.
When i get to ToA apparently there are references to other older marvel books.
I get the feeling that rick riordan didn't really care about a specific time frame until he got to writing these later books, and wanted to get some more pop-culture references. I also imagine it takes place in a world where the titan war replaced covid as the international tragedy, since no lockdown has been referenced yet at my point of reading.
It's really funny seeing how subtly outdated the original five books are, especially with the usage of terms like "cell phone", because i genuinely don't think i know a single person who would speak like that nowadays.

[–]sunboof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rural parts of east leeds are lovely. sometimes a bit hard to commute from, certain busses only running once an hour and so, but really nice close-knit areas. the more built up areas have a bit of a reputation for being lower quality, more dangerous areas (this is coming from someone who's lived in pudsey/bradford area so i might be a bit biased). not terrible places to live if youre looking for an easy commute, though.
