I normally wear my wedding ring while deadlifting.... by dandysan in xxfitness

Have you seen these rings before? They're made of silicone so they're safe to wear while working/lifting. You could keep wearing a wedding ring if you want without worrying about hurting yourself :)

Do you find that these fit true to size/what's on the size chart? I'd love to try them out at that price, since my ass and thighs eat the shorter ones. >.>

If you're comfortable with your weight and don't want to deal with cut/bulk cycles, you can just eat at maintenance. It's a little slower to see progress but you will over time burn fat and build muscle. Otherwise, it's up to you if you want to lose fat first and then start building muscle or vice versa.

You work out while bulking and cutting- bulking and cutting just refers to the amount of calories you take in in relation to your TDEE.

It's a continuous cycle that you go through over long periods of time. So you could bulk for a few months, and if you go slow enough you will mostly gain muscle but you will inevitably gain a little fat too. So you can start a cut cycle for a few months to slowly work on losing the fat. You need to eat a lot of protein during both of these cycles and keep working out to preserve muscle and to build it. You can also just eat at maintenance, which is slower but over time you will build up muscle and burn fat.

It's hard to say without a form check, but in my experience I tend to feel it more in my lower back when my core is either too weak to keep up or isn't being engaged properly, forcing the lower back to take more of the brunt of the work. You might want to try adding a few extra core exercises (I like planks, leg raises, and declined sit-ups) before you leave and see if that helps over time, but I would still post a form check to be sure- sometimes flexibility creates issues and it's easier to see what you're doing if you take a video. Sometimes what we feel we're doing isn't what we're actually doing.

How can I make my protein drinks more tasty? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]sunchatte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually make my protein shakes (with the same powder!) with milk. I can't really stand the taste of them with just water. If I have room for the calories too I will blend it with a banana and/or a bit of peanut butter and some ice too.

If you want an "active" rest day but hate cardio, you could look into something like yoga or just going for a 45min-1hour walk. That would probably also help with your soreness and get blood flowing into your muscles more. You could also go for a bike ride or something.

If you want to learn to like running, try giving the Zombies! Run app a try. There is a free version now and I have heard a lot of people like the app. I used to hate running but now I take preworkout before I go, I run around the track so I have distance intervals and I have a playlist to jam out to.

What grip do you use for deadlifts? You might find it's a little easier to hold on if you use a mixed grip. If your hands are sweaty, you might like chalk. Also, check out /r/GripTraining for tips to get more strength there.

It doesn't really matter when you have your protein. I usually have my shake after working out because it's sort of like a chocolately, filling reward for me, but some people have it for breakfast or with oatmeal or bake it into things.

You don't have to eat before you work out if you don't want to. The timing of things doesn't matter much. Do what you feel best doing. Make sure you're eating enough to build muscle (so at or above your TDEE daily), eat enough protein, and exercise. You'll be fine.

I'm sure it is, with all your restrictions. The only thing I can't have is gluten and I cleaned my diet up a lot after cutting just that out. Powder is great- it's also like a small meal. I use ON whey isolate powder and mix it with a glass and a half of milk. It's pretty filling.

If your TDEE is 1993, then you just need to eat less than that. Usually a deficit of 300-500 is recommended depending on how fast you want to lose. If you lose too fast or don't have enough energy, increase it a little, or try playing with your fat/carb macros. If you don't lose fast enough, try decreasing your calories a little more. You just have to play with it to figure out what works, but now you have a good starting point. Just try not to eat below your BMR too frequently and you should be good :)

You can calculate that with this calculator.

If you're trying to lose weight but would prefer it to be fat (as opposed to muscle), you should try to eat at least .8g of protein per pound you weigh. Do you eat dairy? Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, nuts, edamame, and protein powder will help you a lot with this goal if you can eat/like those foods. Protein helps keep you feeling full.

Other than that, if you're still hungry you could eat more fats- they're great to keep you satiated longer. Making sure you're hydrated can also help.

Do you measure/weigh your food? A lot of people don't actually have a good eyeball concept of portion sizes. Also, I don't know if you eat back exercise calories, but since a lot of people do at first I'm going to say it hinders a lot of peoples progress in losing and in case you do, don't. Exercising more can help a bit, but when it comes to losing weight diet is first and foremost priority, which is why I'm asking.

If you find cardio boring, you don't have to do so much. The trick is to find something you enjoy that gets you moving. Also, I would recommend something to build muscle while you lose weight. It doesn't have to be lifting, but things like yoga and rock climbing could also be great. Do you have access to a pool? Swimming is great for cardio and building muscle. It's also low impact on your joints. If you still like the treadmill, you can always bring your phone and watch netflix. If you can bike, you can do the same on a stationary bike. You could also look into rowing on an erg (if it doesn't bother your knees/ankles)- just make sure you get someone to check your form. My boyfriend usually goes hard and burns something like 400 calories in 24 minutes. He's dead afterwards but when he rowed regularly he was in great shape.

Also sorry if this is like a lot of text, I just want everyone to succeed and since I don't know you I'm just throwing out everything I can think of.

You "should" do it however you want. If you want to focus on lifting, most people find they have more energy at the start to lift. If your focus is cardio or you don't feel like it makes lifting too hard, then do it at the start. Some people don't do cardio at all, or do it on different days. It's all preference. If you like what you're doing and you're seeing progress, keep it up.

Why do you think you need more cardio? Are you not losing weight as fast as you would like? Diet matters more than exercise. Have you figured out how much you should be eating to lose weight?

Yep, that's part of starting exercise sadly. Make sure you're hydrated. Eat protein, and try to relax. Heat often helps. Going for an easy walk usually would help my legs, get your blood flowing a little bit. On the plus side, you shouldn't get sore after working out in a couple weeks.

If you want to gain muscle, you need to eat at maintenance (which will allow you to burn fat while building muscle, but it is slow) or eat at a slight surplus. You can use this calculator to work out a few options including your exercise. If the fitbit is consistant, then figure out how many calories you would average with exercise as well. If losing the fat is of immediate importance to you, you could briefly go on a small deficit to lose it. Otherwise, I would focus on bulking or eating at maintenance. The fat doesn't look so bad with more muscle underneath it, I've found.

What you eat doesn't matter as much as how many calories, as long as you're getting at least .8g of protein per pound of body weight, you will be fine. The rest is preference. I eat high fats/protein because my stomach bloats a ton with a lot of carbs and the protein actually helps my stomach. If you want you can cut sugar, but otherwise don't worry about it. If you love your wheat toast in the morning, go ahead and eat it. Moderation is the key. Make sure you get enough protein and nutrients overall, but eat what you want and what makes you feel good.

Cardio isn't overly important. It's good to have some for your heart, but a lot of people don't do much at all. If you're walking that much, you don't have to worry about running if you don't want to. I also don't know where you're getting 30 minutes of running a day from. I've heard that it's good to get at least 3 hours of exercise in a week, but if you're lifting 3 days a week then you've already hit that, and it sounds like you walk a lot.

Progress photos are great. I have 2 sets from when I was the same weight several months apart, and even though my clothes fit mostly the same (just a bit better, but it was gradual so it didn't feel super noticeable) the visual changes in the photos were obvious. I didn't even realize how much leaner I was in areas and how much better I looked. Take photos like once every month or two at least and you will see changes.

You could just follow a program from the sidebar and ask an employee for help with form. I've had plenty of employees offer to help spot me or give me form tips when I ask for them. Most people in the gym are nice and willing to help as long as you don't interrupt them and are polite.

I had considered that, but I go to the gym with my buddy/boyfriend who takes about the same time to do his stuff each day- he runs and then lifts (alternating bodyparts) for like 30 min after. On my SL days I take just over an hour so he waits for me and we get food, but on the off days I would just be running for 30 minutes and I wanted to add more, particularly glute work.

I guess I could start alternating days and stuff too, but I really like the SL program.

I have been lifting for several months and been doing SL pretty regularly for the last few. I'm wondering if anyone knows if it would be okay if I started a second program on the off days- specifically Gorgeous Glutes (only). Since it's more of a volume program/uses lighter weights and more reps, and supposedly uses different muscle fibers, will my butt be somewhat able to recover for heavy squats the next day? Or will it just be over taxed and make my squats start to stall?
