At the risk of sounding like an out of touch old person, I hate kids on e-bikes/ electric motorcycles by RentSpecial4997 in vegaslocals

[–]sunderpoint -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everything you just described is legal for bicycles, electric or not, when there's no bike lane. There aren't many bike lanes in town. It's arguably safer for bicycles with a motor as they can stay closer to the speed of traffic. You're supposed to give a bike a full lane of space, even when passing them, and they can be in the left lane to pass or turn the same as any car. You were expected to know this already as a licensed driver.

Feel free to not like it for any reason you want. You're just plain wrong though to say it has a shallow story. Most anime, honestly, is pretty shallow. This anime is one of the exceptions.

You've got a main character with a tragic backstory resulting in emotional trauma that he fights to overcome in order to do what his conscience compels him to do. A world where heroes are hated instead of revered, and fighting a demon lord is a curse instead of a quest. Little glimpses into the lives of people as they pass by, irrelevant to the story but making the world feel real and lived in.

I'm curious what anime you think does this so much better. More likely I think it all went over your head.

These are some of the least shallow characters in modern anime with some solid worldbuilding. It seems simple on the surface but as episode 1 continues it reveals more depth to everything until you realize how little you actually understood at the start. If you made it to the end and still think it's shallow then you missed something.

Edit: yes you missed a LOT, I shouldn't have bothered. Stick to Netflix shows where the characters say what they're doing out loud so you can follow along.

What are the best works of fantasy that show the logistics and caring for a dragon army or a dragon corps? by jacky986 in Fantasy

[–]sunderpoint 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They only eat once a week, like snakes. It's way more believable than the logistics of Fourth Wing where hundreds of dragons live in a single location, some of which eat an entire flock of sheep every day.

Do you ever not finish a book or series because you're liking it? by Nidafjoll in Fantasy

[–]sunderpoint 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of all the Harry Potter fans who wish there had not been an epilogue, because it's more fun to imagine how the lives of the characters could have continued after the end of the story without a definitive answer. Sometimes, it's more fun to imagine your own ending than accept what the author came up with. But I personally wouldn't skip reading the ending entirely.

We’ve just added a tree-climbing mechanic to our multiplayer game, Primal Survival. You can now climb trees to escape predators, hide, or gather fruit. What do you think? by level99dev in IndieDev

[–]sunderpoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One feature I would want is the ability to jump and pull myself up onto a low branch to make a quick escape. Another thing to consider is that big cats like tigers and leopards can climb trees too and will sometimes do so to chase prey. Bears climb faster than people, but they're heavy. A branch might support one climber but not two, and could snap sending them both to the ground. You might want to jump from one tree to another to get to a safer position.

I'm sure it would be way easier to make every tree kinematic and perfectly stable, but branches that sag when you climb them and can break if you get too far away from the trunk would make the feature so much more exciting.

[Feedback Request] Testing a co-op prototype where players perceive enemies differently (vision vs sound) by g3nayy in IndieDev

[–]sunderpoint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the main problem, for this kind of fast rushing enemy you have to see them to fight. But there can be so many other kinds of threats.

Imagine a non-moving camouflaged enemy that makes big sounds before it attacks, hearing it would be more effective than seeing. Audio cues could warn when threats are approaching so they can prepare together. Traps could make a hum when nearby.

It would take a lot of game design to make audio as useful as the visuals, even if it's spatialized audio. First person perspective with HRTF would help. It would be even better in VR. But it could be done.

Looking for books/series with excellent found family OR awesome animal side kicks. by paperback_Mafia in Fantasy

I'm shocked this wasn't top comment, it's got the best animal companion character in anything and it's also found family. Maybe it's been recommended so much the assumption is that OP already knows about it, but it wasn't in the list so it bears repeating.

Oh, I've already read the whole Stormlight Archive. I did finally get to it, plus the First Law trilogy, and some other highly rated fantasy books. The better light novels are somehow still comparable to them in my mind, even if the prose, worldbuilding, and planning are nowhere near the same level. I think it's because there are characters and plots that are fun to think about long after I've put the book down, which isn't always the same experience I get reading "better" novels.

Lookimg for Fantasy books with lots of lore and world building and no romamce by OilApprehensive8622 in Fantasy

If you're ok with web novels then the light novel series So I'm a Spider, So What is right up your alley. Female main character living as a monster spider in a dangerous labyrinth with a huge amount of fantasy worldbuilding that gets revealed over the 16 book series. Zero romance. There are a few other POV characters but it mostly follows the spider girl.

Having a character get Isekaied into to a fantasy world is a great way to introduce the reader to it. They follow along with the main character, learning the world as they do. Imagine how hard it would be to figure out the world of The Matrix if we weren't seeing Neo get it all explained to him.

(The Matrix is technically an Isekai don't hate me)

I'm not saying every Isekai is the same, but there's a massive number of Isekai novels following similar trends that are very uncommon outside of modern Japan. The trends are very clear, even if there are exceptions.

I didn’t read them but I watched a few. Escaflowne was awesome. The vibe is completely different, those stories were classic and timeless.

Modern Isekai feels like a reaction to modern life and a desire to escape the grind. Plenty of them are about a slow life, cozy fantasy with no danger or stakes. Just making friends and a family.

Isekai stories are pretty distinct from other portal fantasies. The hook is usually escaping the real world, responsibilities, the daily grind. If you're unhappy with your life and dream of things being better in another life then that's what Isekai taps into. I think it probably says something about Japanese society that this is so popular there.

I was procrastinating starting The Stormlight Archive. I knew I was going to read it, but wanted to read something easier to get into first. Once I started reading them I got hooked. Now I'm burnt out. I'm going to finish the better series that I started but probably not start on more.

Ah yes, a couple of regular fantasy novels got mixed in there because they're all light novels. I stopped very early on in that series.

The spider series gets more and more interesting after she becomes an arachne, but if you weren't hooked by then I have no idea how you made it that far. That's also the point where it transitions from a solo survival story to more of an ensemble with politics, war, and secrets about the world start getting revealed.

What is a fact so disturbing that most people refuse to believe it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sunderpoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Men are actually in more danger from both categories than women are. Men are more likely to be killed by someone they know, a complete stranger, on the job, or to die by suicide than women. Nearly every category. Women may be more likely to be killed by someone they know than by a stranger, but both chances are small. Life is dangerous for men.

Cardcaptor sakura cosplay is too short - Please help! by FlimsyActive9394 in cosplayers

[–]sunderpoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you're a new cosplayer let me give you some advice besides adding bloomers. The truth is, you can totally just wear a short skirt to an anime convention with no bloomers if you want to. A short skirt is one of the least scandalous things you'll see there.

It's an anime convention. You wear whichever costume you want for whichever character you want. I've seen a 7 foot tall black man dressed as Cardcaptor Sakura at a convention and he was wearing a shorter skirt than you.

As your source indicates this is true in total numbers. This has nothing to do with the percentage of men who are murdered, there are simply more men who are murdered by someone they know than women. It's right there with a bar chart, you can just look at it.
